One thing I really noticed on rewatch here is that Donna’s mum comes across as this really tough domineering figure but once the world goes to hell she’s the FIRST to give up while Donna and Wilf try to remain hopeful. Donna not listening to her Mum putting her down that one time saved the world, who knew 🤷🏼‍♂️

Oh the end of the episode gives me *chills* specifically right at the end where The Doctor is asking Donna 'what did she say', leading into the Bad Wolf reveal. Wilf's line about "Labour camps, that's what they called them last time." is just a gut punch.

Dr. Who LOVES awesome actors who are character actors who know enough theatre to switch-up with the make-up and prostethetics. IE, Peter Capaldi and Amy both being different characters in the same episode only to be very important later on. 😊. There's some awesome Dr. canon to explain it all.

@@andidreyes5323 Not just Peter and Karen. Don't forget Colin Baker, the sixth Doctor, was in Peter Davison's Arc of Infinity as Maxill, Commander of the Citadel Guard on Gallifrey. Colin even gets to shoot his predecessor at one point. :D Also Jaqueline "Barbara Wright" Hill, first female companion, who returned for the Tom Baker story Meglos. Freema "Martha" Jones player Martha's cousin Adeola in Army of Ghosts. Eve "Gwen Cooper" Myles was Gwyneth in The Unquiet Dead before returning both in Who and in the main role in Torchwood. The beetle is said to be part of the Trickster's brigade. The Trickster was recently namechecked as being part of the same pantheon that Maestro and Sutekh belong to and originally a recurring villain in the spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures which was aimed at younger audiences.

Rose possessed by heart of TARDIS is the Bad Wolf. She creates herself. She spreads the words throughout time and space as a message to herself. I think it is cool and makes sense that Bad Wolf would exist in the points in their stream beyond the Eccleston “Parting of the Ways” episode.

If you remember the Pompeii episode, Lucius prophesied to the "daughter of London" that "there is something on your back." Taking big breaks will mean you'll miss out on references they've been laying down throughout the season. Will be a much bigger deal in the next season.

Donna's dad Geoff Noble was played by Howard Attfield in The Runaway Bride and it was originally planned for him to return in this season, he even filmed the allotment scenes for Partners In Crime. However he was terminally ill and sadly passed early into production of the season. RTD recast British comedy legend Bernard Cribbins as Donna's grandfather (I don't remember if this was the plan when he appeared in Voyage of the Damned but I don't think so). There are a few slight references to Sylvia (Jacqueline King) and Donna being recently bereaved, but this episode really tracks Sylvia's descent into utter hopeless grief, despair and depression. She's probably the harshest of the 'companion mums' so far, but this episode really made me feel for her.
@Look_Over_There
@Look_Over_There 3 ай бұрын
@@OldManFerdiad I feel like there’s a generational trauma situation going on with Sylvia. She’s very insecure and she takes it out on Donna, in the runaway bride Donna acts very much like Sylvia until she meets the doctor and Wilf moves in. It makes my think Sylvia probably had a mother just like she is to Donna or worse.
@OldManFerdiad
@OldManFerdiad 3 ай бұрын
@@Look_Over_There totally agree. I do genuinely think Sylvia loves her family, but maybe hasn't learned how to express that. She does worry about Donna, but it expresses as nagging and criticism.

@@OldManFerdiad You’re right, it was not their plan when he appeared in Voyage of the Damned, but fortunately they were able to just make him the same character instead of an identical cousin or whatever. The character even had a different name, but since we didn’t learn his name in the episode it didn’t matter.
@Persewna4
@Persewna4 3 ай бұрын
@@notallwhowanderarelost4797 I love that they did incorporate that into the narrative, even making it a point here when the Doctor notes that he met Donna, then Wilf, then Donna again, like he couldn't quite escape her social orbit.

In seasons 3 & 4, they dealt with the tight filming schedule by giving us “Love and Monsters” & “Blink” where neither the doc nor the companion was utilized. Going forward they started splitting them up- giving us both a companion lite episode (ie “Midnight”) and a doctor lite episode (like this one). “There’s something on your back” has been coming up since the Pompei episode. I’m glad a reactor finally included a reaction to the glass of water joke - one of my favorites.

A big part of Brexit was based on rhetoric around immigration and racism, so you shouldn't feel bad in making that link. But, there were lots of over factors, such as David Cameron's government cutting a huge amount of public spending and making people lives feel measurably worse, and people rejecting the government's position of remain in the referendum as protest. Euro-scepticism has been a big part of UK media discourse for decades, mainly pushed by secretly funded right wing lobby groups based on Tufton Street in Westminster, such as the Institute of Economic Affairs. There's also an argument that the online rhetoric was amplified by Russia in order to weaken the UK and EU.

One of my favourite episodes of all time! We get to see how much the Doctor has changed Donna, as well as how much the universe depends on him, with a heavy dose of political allegory thrown in for good measure. The acting from Bernard Cribbins (Wilf) in the 'labour camp' scene is nothing short of phenomenal, and as a WWII vet himself, you can tell there was so much emotional weight behind his performance.

The Beatle on Donna's back is a callback to Sarah Jane Smith being the victim of a possessed giant spider on her back in the famous Dr. Who serial "Planet of the Spiders" which was the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee's) final story. David Tennant was mostly unavailable during the filming of this episode I'm glad Donna got to do her own story but I was never a big fan of Doctor lite episodes so it's one of those episodes I don't often go back too.

Ive been thinking about this episode a lot since the devils chord. "what are you" very similar to this episode at the end. and how 73 yards is kind similar to this story as a what if... ok whoever rose was had everyone shook..... i have to think the original plan for Ruby was that she was Sutekh... how else could we explain everyone being so terrified? so now my head canon is RTD initially planned Ruby to be Sutekh but Millie was so likeable and adorable that we just couldnt pull the trigger on that one so they re-wrote that part of the story and gave us a lack luster ending to the Ruby Sunday mystery and equally a weak end to Sutekh himself.

So.... a couple of things: 1.) Donna is a different kind of companion because in the first time in a long time, she is the first one that is there for the journey and the friendship and she has become the Doctor's best friend because she doesnt demand anything from him. Especially, if you remember at the end of "Midnight", after the Doctor survived the tram ride, she was there and gave him all he needed: a hug and an ear. 2.) Bad Wolf - We found out who and what Bad Wolf was at the end of Season 1. Rose is the Bad Wolf.

If Midnight is my favorite episode, then Turn Left is my next favorite. David Tennant and Catherine Tate give such great dramatic performances in their respective episode. I think this episode is a favorite-upon-rewatch type of episode, knowing what it leads into, and getting this insight into Donna's life in a unique and revealing way. It's like "Father's Day" for Rose, where the Companion's family takes a key role, and in seeing them with their families, we understand the self that they tend to hide. Rose reveals how much her lack of a father weighed on her, to the point of creating a paradox just to get a chance to grow up with one. Turn Left shows that, beneath the moxy and shouting, is a woman who doesn't believe she's special, who has been beaten down by that thought that the only way to silence it is to be loud and seemingly self-centered. The scene where Donna asks her mum if she's always been disappointed in her and Sylvia mumbles "yeah..." always makes me tear up. No wonder Donna wants to travel with the Doctor, because when they're running, she doesn't have time to doubt herself. Oh, also Bad Wolf was season 1, Torchwood season 2, season 3 had the Harold Saxon hints, and season 4 was Rose. That scene at the end of the episode always gets me, it's such a gut punch for the Doctor that Rose might be back. Cannot wait for the last episodes of this season. I think you're going to enjoy it!

What I always liked about RTD is that he made a cohesive universe that kept building for 4 seasons, even without the spin offs he would still build upon previous seasons. Even here there's a mention of the Trickster aka "god of traps" in the new Ncuti era (and a great SJA villain, that NEEDS to come back) So despite current criticism of "wokeness" and stuff, I hope season 14 is just the start of that again and future seasons get bigger. You couldn't do this episode or the finale to season 4 as a stand-alone thing and I feel that and the Tennant-Tate duo is why most feel season 4 is near perfect.

is it even though? was just thinking about 73 yards today and its pissing me off even more lol. its so BAD!!!!! like i thought it was decent.. until the Ruby reveal ruined it. Ive heard people say the lack of explanation at the end of 73 yards is what makes it work. but we find out in the end the old woman scaring the ever living CRAP out of people.... its just older Ruby making people petrified of her. Basically torturing ruby her whole life by making everyone she ever gets close to, even her own mother, even kate.... abandon her.. and what could she have possibly said that was so bad that it scared everyone? that her mom disowned her? "shes ordinary" or "shes been traveling with the Egyptian god of death who will bring about the end of all life" either way none of that would make your mom abandon you like that..... this episode does a much better job of showing how an ordinary person can make a difference. one simple choice. dont meet the doctor, the doctor dies because you werent there to help him snap out of a moment of anger and rage, everything changes

@@SoTOreo if you spent maybe a moment to think about the episode instead of criticizing it based only on the face value, you'd realize why everyone reacted to the old woman like they did. The old woman Ruby and young Ruby are creating, entangled in, and the result of a paradox. I'd imagine that coming face to face with the very center of a paradox would be too much for the human mind to handle. I'd also imagine that a paradox is fragile, and needs to defend it's stability. Ergo, an inexplicable but overwhelming urge to _get the hell away from her._

I knew you guys wouldn’t like this one quite as much as some people do, because this episode is all Donna. For people who love Donna, it’s one of the best episodes of all time- I know you like her more than you used to, but you don’t fangirl over her like most of us… 😂

Wait! Sutekh kinda looks like a emaciated wolf, he was hidden around the TARDIS when Rose got power over life and death and she called herself Bad Wolf. What if she was able to see him!

Very nice idea, but I think Sutekh was more of a dog than a wolf. I guess it could still apply on a metaphorical level, though.

Only problem with the addition of the element of sutekh is that he would have been completely destroyed by the FLUX! Even the time vortex energy couldn’t touch the power of the FLUX!

Donna era is not my favorite era of writing or story by any means BUT Donna (and grandad Wilf) are top shelf companion relationships.

Ok, I got the Golden Child reference! 🤣 Wait Flashpoint/The Flash, sorry, that's DC not Marvel. Thou hath Blasphemed!!! 🤣 Oh now I can say, back in Fires of Pompeii, remember the clairvoyant daughter was telling Donna she saw something on her back!! And yes, grandad Wilf is priceless! Momma Sylvia, she irks me too. She suuuuucks, in this ep.
