A possible place for the Ruth Doctor would be between 2 and 3, we never see the direct regeneration and there is a theory that 2 did some work for the time lord black ops for a while. This would explain ruth's line, a job she didn't apply for and can not leave.

That would not work with the 12 regenerations law. Smith was the 13th Doctor because of the War Doctor and Tennant regenerating twice. Can't see away that it would work out if she is between 2 and 3. It would make sense if she was pre Hartnell but with a different life span. There is a thing called the Looms in the novels which brings life. A timecard is born and when they die they are put in the Looms and are reborn. That could explain the two Doctors not knowing each other. Just a theory I picked up from another KZbin reactor. But who knows ye? Who knows?

Enjoyable reaction - thanks! No, they didn't rewrite everything or 'destroy canon' as some are saying. We don't even know the explanation yet, but they could be bringing in the concept of the "Loom" from audio and print which could explain the new doctor without changing any canon, or this doctor could be from another universe, or the Master has screwed up the timeline. As the Doctor said "Time is swirling all around me". Also if I remember correctly, Brain of Morbius had already established 8 doctors pre-Hartnell. I see it as expanding canon, not destroying it, and am going to sit back and enjoy the ride. :) But I don't expect it all to be neatly tied up this season - Chibnall said he had a 5 year plan when he took the job and as we saw from the timeless child setup in his first season, he's thinking long term.

The only explanation for this incarnation is multi-verse as to put them anywhere in the current incarnations would break the very rules of regeneration. and we've seen every regeneration since Hartnell and Hartnell has to be the first due to the canon established in Name of The Doctor and Listen.

Not necessarily - we never actually saw the Second regenerate into the Third, for example. Plus, it might not break the rules, if they make it clear that the Doctor was wrong about Tennant-into-Tennant counting as a regeneration. Alternatively, if the Timelords suppressed the Ruth Incarnation for whatever reason, they very well may have also given an extra regen to complete the cover up.

It has to be - because neither Doctor remembers the other incarnation. If Ruth!Doctor was a future incarnation, than she would remember being 13. If Ruth!Doctor was a past incarnation, than 13 would remember being her. This isn't like the War Doctor where both 10 and 11 remember (but don't want to) that incarnation.

If Ruth has something to do with that, it would make sense they'd suppress all memory of her, including from herself. Gaz and Doctor Ruth both seem to hail from this early era of Rassilon and Omega, as Gaz says she serves for the GLORY of Gallifrey. This would be when the timescoop was used to grab other races to battle to the death in the DeathZone on Gallifrey for their amusement (the 5 Doctors).

The first use of the sonic screwdriver was in the second doctor serial Fury From the Deep, of which all 6 parts are missing, which is really too bad. So if this doctor is one of the doctors, as the liar and deciver Chibnell claims, she would have to be between 1 and 2, which is difficult, since we have the transformation of 1 into 2 on film. BTW, Chibnell's latest was a rollicking good adventure, just too preachy. My feelings are f*** the enviromental problems and every other cause, I'm watching for fun, and this a**hol* is lousing up an otherwise good show with super heavy handed propaganda. We know the world's problems. We just want an hour to relax and escape all of the sh**. Mommy nanny Chriss C. needs to come off his self appointed pedestal and just give us great fun. I freaking loved this episode. I have been enjoying Jodi’s Doctor but this episode blew me way and got me all excited about Doctor Who again . I read this article that believes it’s a future incarnation of the Doctor, but thats wrong this is not a future doctor this is the Doctor before the War Doctor (John Hurt) you can tell by (1) Ruth’s TARDIS interior looks like the first Doctors [ William Hartnell] (2) Gallifrey is alive and well plus you get a sense this is before the War with the Dalek’s so its not time locked like the Great Time War. (3) It’s already cannon that the Doctor can wipe out and not remember a lifetime for example The War Doctor. This Dr. Ruth (lol wonder if she gives Sex advice) is obviously a past incarnation of the Doctor Who did something so bad she was wiped from the Doctors memories like the War Doctor , could also elude to the lost child that was hinted at in last season.

You got too close to right at 5:02 for me to say anything top, potential spoilers below if my theory is correct. Ruth is a version of the doctor before the first doctor. Evidenced by the fact that the interior of the TARDIS has the classic design, but looks brand new. This means that Clara tricked William Hartnell into taking his old TARDIS. This means that at some point before the Hartnell regeneration, there was a previous set of regenerations. This also means that Missy was 100% telling the truth about remembering the doctor from when he, the master was a little boy and she, the doctor was a little girl. This also means that the doctor's memories were wiped at the start of the William Hartnell regeneration.

OK, I just saw a theory posted that is probably the most different and most plausable I have heard yet. The poster said "What if the Timeless Child is actually Gallifrey". And when it is REALLY killed (not fake killed like in Day of the Doctor TimeWar) the planet Gallifrey REGENERATES. Then when the master found this out he destroyed Gallifrey to see if it Regenerated. So Gat and the Ruth Doctor are new versions Regenerated along with the planet. This is probably NOT true, but still, I had not heard this one yet.

I've watched this a few times through reactions. I've just had the beginnings of a notion / extremely vague and not fully formed or thought out theory come into my mind. What if The Doctor is timeless child. But not the only one. A Gallifreyan cloning experiment. "Everything you think you know is a lie." The Master found out about his his/her friend and burnt it all down as revenge. The Master could be version of same experiment gone seriously wrong. They have the tendency to "RUN!" by their very nature and are hunted by their creators. I should say I seriously hope not and that this is just a crazy notion. I have a theory! This "new" Doctor is the Doctor from before everything - the very original. She and the rest of the Timelords discovered the "Timeless Child", an entity that was the incarnation of the Universe itself, that took the form of a child. Back then they weren't called the Timelords, but something else entirely. The Timelords imprisoned the Timeless Child and used her to gain control over time and space. This is when they changed their name to the "Timelords". They then had their memories wiped - either by their own volition because they were ashamed at what they did, or the Timeless Child did it.

Hypothesis: The Doctor had a life before #1 (Hartnell). She worked in the shadows on behalf of the Time Lords (Celestial Intervention Agency, see The Deadly Assasin), and for some reason resigned from the job and went on the run. That's where we are here, the Doctor in hiding from the Time Lords, she knows too much! At some point they catch her, wipe her memory and force a whole new regeneration cycle on her so she thinks she/he is a new Time Lord, but old habits die hard. He steals back his Tardis helped by his granddaughter and runs away again...

I did remember one thing from last season; when Jodie was picking out her outfit, the comment she said was "it's been a while since I've bought women's clothes". As far as we know, the doctor's never been a woman before, so hmmm.... very intriguing. I took a break from work to watch this episode; at the end of the episode I had a headache from excitement overload! I wish I had the luxury of taking a nap, I really needed one too! I think Ruth is a second Doctor from an alternate time line. She still calls the TARDIS "ship" and she doesn't know what a sonic screw driver is, when it was introduced (as a more rudimentary tool) during the era of the second Doctor in Classic Who.

I'm thinking a hidden 2nd doctor since the Tardis didn't get locked into the Police Box shape until the 1st (Hartnell) doctor landed on Earth and she didn't recognise the sonic screwdriver which arrived with the 2nd (Troughton) doctor. The obvious (and boring answer) is that Tennant didn't actually use a regeneration, or only used a partial regeneration, to save himself in Season 4. With a hidden earlier regeneration, the future doctors just accepted that was what happened and didn't think twice about it as it all "added" up. I hope that they have a more interesting story in mind though!!

As I woke this morning, an idea popped into my head regarding the lone Cyberman mentioned in Doctor Who. Maybe what it wants from the Doctor is some of her regeneration power so it can become flesh again. Out of compassion, she gives it what it wants and it regenerates...into the Master. Because the body of Missy had been left on the Cyberman ship, and we all know what happens when the Cybermen get there hands on a body.

As I recall, we missed one of the early regenerations on screen - 2 to 3, I think - and alternate material implied that the Doctor worked for Time Lord Black Ops in this time. It's totally reasonable that they blanked his/ her memory afterwards, and compensated by giving him another regeneration. It doesn't have to be that, I'm just arguing that Time Lords can and have done some freaky things (the Master and Rassilon being solid examples) Plus, do you remember Missy stating "I know him ever since he was a little girl?"

My favorite season is four but twelve might be taking that title soon. That all depends on how the season ends. If it turns out that they want to completely rewrite everything then I would see it as the worst, but if there is some other amazing twist then it will be my favorite. The thing is, it is impossible for this new Doctor to exist. There was literally no time for it. That means that this has to be an alternate universe. The trolls are going to go crazy with the black, female version. I can practically hear them solely focusing on the fact that she is black and nothing else. I adore the fact that Yaz is getting more time to shine. She’s becoming a really good companion.

I honestly don't see how it can be a Pre-hartnell Doctor because of well... This new doctors TARDIS.. Is a police box...just think about that... This has to be to do with the Timeless Child. I don't know.. But by god... For the first time in years I'm actually thrilled and tense about where this is going

Literally the only thing that bugs me about this potentially being a pre-Hartnell Doctor is the Police Box, honestly. If she isn't from a different universe, however, the only other logical place for her to come from, though, is between 2 and 3.

could be a multiverse thing so don't go crap on the show when we don't know the full picture. They clearly say in this episode that niether recognize each other as a past or future self. And the new master came out of nowhere (with beings of another dimension, but that may be just a thing in Spyfall) that didn't even acknoledged being Missy.
