I think the Master being the Timeless Child would be compelling from a character/ dynamic perspective. Like imagine if you were the progenitor of your race but you were cast from it as "a villian", it would almost give justification for the Master's god complex and in turn make him even more dangerous. Then on the other hand, having the Doctor be just a random timelord and be the one to always overcome the Master just by being who they are would give an endearing quality to the character.

It would be GREAT to retcon the Timeless Child in some way, perhaps using the Nightmare Child, but I fear that in fact it will simply be forgotten, like the Doctor being "half Time Lord, half human" as per the Dr Who movie.

I find the timeless child doesn’t need fixing, just eradicating, it removes of the grandeur of previous series and the magic of past heart felt scenes, confusing the audience with its thousands of plot holes. It was an unnecessary addition that took away more than it gave.

I think it’d be super easy. Have The Master revealed as the Timeless Child, and the whole ‘regenerating into The Doctor’ thing was his attempt to run away from all that was done to him - from the Timeless Child arc to more recently with the signal implanted into his first modern form. A reveal for The Master being an inspirational figure, fallen from grace and traumatised, would be amazing and heartbreaking. Also The Fugitive Doctor was actually really interesting and I really enjoyed her, so a future regeneration into Ruth after this is revealed would mean that she would have to interact with her own past. Or, alternatively, The Toymaker in the 60th will confuse the entire situation.

I still think that the Timeless Child breaks the whole Doctor Who cannon and spirit. The greatest thing about The Doctor is that they were not a special Time Lord by birth. They became special because of who they decided to be. Having The Doctor as a "chosen one" and almighty god of Gallifrey destroys the whole fun of the show. In the past, anyone could be The Doctor. Now it seems you have to be special by birth to be somebody. Personally, I would retcon the Timeless Child as it being The Master, explaining his hatred of Time Lords and The Doctor as his clone.

And it makes all the other mentions throughout the series of the doctor being different make sense as well. In the brain of morbius, we saw the timeless child’s previous faces since their memories are kind of intertwined. When 7 says he is not just any time lord he is using the child’s memories again. When 3 says he is thousands of years old that is instead the child. Once the doctor used the fob watch several times like with 7 and 10, they gradually lost the child’s memories as their consciousness was reestablished to what it was before their memories became intertwined. That’s why doctors of the modern era don’t remember the child.

Here's my take. (1) The elderly 11th Doctor became the host of the Timeless Child who was converted into regenerative energy thanks to Rassilon because Tecteun forced him in exchange for a way to escape the moment. It can be said that Rassilon and Omega were in on the Timeless Child conspiracy and the Game of Rassilon (The 5 Doctors) was a trap like the 1st Doctor said but a means to keep the Timeless Child a secret. (2) Tecteun saved Missy by giving her a boost that allowed her to regenerate into the 'Sacha Dhawan' Master and told him lies and half-truths and even changed some data in the matrix to "prove it", to use his obsession, in hopes that he'll keep the 13th Doctor busy from learning the real truth about the Timeless Child and one of those lies was purposely creating the 12 regeneration limit when in fact she tried to make her people into gods like the Timeless Child but ended up making them demi-gods. Immortality was the goal that still hadn't been reached. (3) The Fugitive Doctor is actually from the 13th Doctor's future who the Division captures and wipes her memories like they did with the Timeless Child when he/she had a physical body and sent her to Gallifrey's past which was before her original self and granddaughter stole the Tardis, which would explain why she had a police box Tardis. (4) The half human thing can be said to be a trap, or one of the traps based on the Master's choices of action, set by the 7th Doctor, the planner incarnation, because it was said that he didn't trust the Master inside the Tardis, even if he was supposedly dead. Make him think he learned a secret about the Doctor that he could have used to beat him. Also, I think it was stated that it was the drugs that was given to him during surgery that almost prevented him from regenerating and it could be said that the 8th Doctor believed he was half human because of how the regeneration process affects the mind.

The "Fugitive Doctor" seems to be post-Hartnell, just judging by the police box shaped TARDIS. My own theory here is that she was created from the Doctor's personality in the Matrix in the early days of the time war. They brought back Rassillon and the Master, why not a Doctor while Eight was still refusing to fight. So, the Fugitive is then post-Hartnell but pre-Whittaker and has a police box shaped TARDIS because if travelling under the moniker of The Doctor its sort of necessary to appear to be The Doctor. The police box becomes a double-disguise, the original failed chameleon circuit, and a copy of that failed design. Too much of the Doctor survives, refuses to fight, does the Doctor thing of going off to see the universe becoming a "fugitive", and Division are employed to bring down the uncooperative duplicate. Simple - well, almost, Division is another issue again but one that doesn't necessarily need to be explained away. The Timeless Child is much more problematic, wrecking the whole point of the Doctor just being a renegade traveller. It messes with the very basic point of the character. Adding to canon is pone thing, demolishing it in the way Chibnall did there is another. Tectaun is another problem again, and writes off a large part of the legacy of Rassillon. The only solution I have had was a very bad one, everything that happens on Gallifrey is a lie the Timelords have told the Master. It all takes place in the matrix, and the whole thing becomes a bad, and way overdone cliche, "and it was all a dream" sequence. Of course, even that gets thrown out by Flux which doubled down on a terrible idea. I'm not completely sold on the watch/chameleon arch idea but it may offer a way through the mess. Some bad ideas can just be ignored (including the scene in "brain of morbius" that opened up all these pre-hartnell possibilities - so much simpler to say the faces were previous incarnations of morbius, not the intent of the writers but the only thing that made sense). Others are so fundamental to the whole universe they need to be addressed, timeless child includes many of those.

The Police Box TARDIS and calling herself 'The Doctor' is weird. That doesn't make it impossible that she's pre-Hartnell but it does leave some hanging questions. Tecteun mostly supplements Rassilon and Omega. And honestly this wouldn't even be the first time Rassilon took credit for someone else's work. I don't think the Morbius faces are a big part of this anyway, but watch that scene again. All the context makes it very clear that the faces are the Doctor being forced back through their regenerations. Morbius is blatantly winning the contest and only loses because his braincase can't hack the strain (which the Doctor was gambling on). BTW, I wouldn't say that Flux "doubles down" on The Timeless Child. I'd say that The Timeless Child happened specifically to set up Flux. Even the way they tell the Timeless Child story is clearly framed with Tecteun as the protagonist. There's no way that wasn't deliberately planting seeds for later.

I think the Doctor being half human was always an interesting thing. I wouldn’t mind if that was changed, but I do think you want to be careful about overusing the fob watch (but ANYTHING to fix the timeless child storyline). I remember watching the episode Listen and thinking about the Doctor’s childhood. The fact that the Doctor never fit in as a child I think works with her being half human.

Good way to fix it. I, for one, have the idea that an alien would somehow want to smash time by changing the past to make a difference in the future. I don't know what it could be yet but I have a tip that it could be Master's death. When the original Master shot Missy, he said he couldn't regenerate but then he regenerated and we have no explanation. Timeles child could be the explanation. What if Timeles children was the Master and he was supposed to die then because he spat out all the regenerations because of the Timeles child? And so for him not to die, it had to happen that timeles child would become someone else like the Doctor. At the same time, it could mean that Master is hybrid (because he's a timeles child and a time lord, and he's also destroyed Gallifrey) and it would also mean that The Doctor doesn't actually have infinite regeneration (I'm sorry it didn't make sense. I write it through a translator)

I always figured the easiest part of this episode was to remember the first rule. The Doctor lies. If the Doctor lies, then so does The Master.

A short time after "The Timeless Child" first aired, I was trying to make sense of it. And there were a couple of candidates who better slotted into the Timeless Child role. For instance, instead of the Doctor being the Timeless Child (which makes no sense and never did)... maybe the Master would be a better, more natural fit. I still like that idea better than what we got. But then I thought about another character that might be even a better fit (and others have suggested this character too). I'm talking about Susan - his original companion. Let's be honest. We don't know if she is actually the Doctor's true granddaughter. That was the identity that the Doctor and Susan chose to go by when they were living on Earth (and Susan was attending the Coal Hill School). What if... having learned about the cruel things his people had been doing to the Timeless Child, he decided to save her and steal her away from Gallifrey (adds to why he left Gallifrey and went "on the run" in the first place - a beginning of a "heroes journey"). They set up the grandfather/granddaughter identities on 1963 Earth and she attends school so she can experience a somewhat normal life for someone her physical age (it also works as part of their cover too... so they'll blend in better). And just like the Doctor's real name isn't John Smith... maybe Susan isn't her real name either. It's just what he called her... and it stuck. The Time Lords don't pursue him to get her back... because they've essentially gotten everything useful they could've from her when she was their ongoing science experiment. The thing is... the Ruth Doctor... could actually be another incarnation of Susan... instead of the Doctor... and a later one too. She's got her own TARDIS... which is fine. She was on Gallifrey for millennia, right? It's likely she already came from a technologically advanced society... so over time, she grew to understand the TARDIS technology... and eventually built her own (as Romana was instructed to do with the plans in K-9 at the end of her last television story) after the Doctor locked her out of the TARDIS at the end of "The Dalek Invasion Of Earth"). It's also why her TARDIS console room looks so much like the First Doctor's... the guy who liberated her. In my opinion, this preserves the Doctor's history as it was understood before "The Timeless Child". William Hartnell is, once again, the First Doctor. It re-establishes the idea of the Doctor standing apart from other Time Lords by WHO he is... not WHAT he was (The Timeless Child). The Doctor never needed to be a virtual God to leave Gallifrey to be the heroic character he became. And to be fair, I didn't like Andrew Cartmell's somewhat similar ideas for the Doctor back in the late '80s either. I just seemed unnecessary... and sent kind of a bad message (that to be exceptional is something you're born with and it's less to do with WHO you are as a person). The other figures that appear in the brain battle in "The Brain Of Morbius" can go back to what I always assumed they were... other incarnations of Morbius. This also fleshes out Susan a bit more too... and let's be honest, despite the fact she was on the show for a little over 1 series, she was essentially the same enigmatic blank slate she was when she first appeared. Don't get me wrong. I like Susan as a character a lot. They just didn't do much with her... and when they did, they never followed it up. Heck, lest we forget, just learning about the Doctor's history has been a slow, 60 year development. :) If you don't like the idea of Ruth being a future incarnation of Susan... there are some equally pallatable possibilities: 1) Ruth is and always was an alternate reality Doctor. 2) Ruth is future Doctor... not a pre-William Hartnell Doctor. I'm not sure that entirely fits though. 3) Ruth is the 3rd Doctor we would've gotten had the Time Lords not forced the 2nd Doctor to regenerate at the end of "The War Games". It's kind of like option 1... except she'd be a living paradox (an orphaned part of his timeline somehow brought into being) instead of from a different reality entirely. Or... it might just be easier to ignore the whole mess and move forward as though it never happened. That's not entirely satisfying, I guess (as fans, we tend to like explanations when the continuity apple cart gets overturned)... and the risk would always be that someone in the future might want to pick up that thread at some point.

Nice ideas! I personally kind of like the Timeless Child just being Susan and the say that The Doctor helped the Timeless Child escape Division but failed and got their memory wiped. This could also explain why the 4th Doctor knew the Morbius Doctor faces (which could have been faces of the Timeless Child). You can then say that Rassilon (who the 13th Doctor expelled from Gallifrey) manipulated The Master into destroying Gallifrey by making them think The Doctor was the Timeless Child.

That would be the ultimate mind screw to the doctor and would be exactly what the master would do to the doctor. Though I would be happy too if the master was somehow the timeless child. Also in one of the comics the 8th Doctor explained that he used a half broken chameleon arc to fool the master. Also though this timeless child in theory would give the doctor or whoever unlimited regenerations, I would think the timelords would have put a cap on the doctor or the master or whoever was the timeless child by transfering their conciousness into a new timelord body that they could limit and atomize the original timeless child's body. I mean that's how I see that if they can transfer conciousnesses. They could have an advanced chameleon arc to do just that since they have alot of advanced tech.

my take on the whole thing, is the timeless child works out, yes it does leave some stuff obselete now, but if the doctor wasnt the timeless child what makes him special besides being a man who took a risk and fled why is his name so mysterious and no one is allowed to know even going back to the first doctor, with the 11th doctor, he didnt know he was the timeless child, making him probably think he could regenerate(all an idea btw), and with the timelords giving him another set of regenerations was to keep him going and to keep fighting for what he stands for.

The show's been a mess since Capaldi's run. I'd like to retcon the majority of recent series episodes as 'technically most of them happened, but The Doctor wasn't involved', as well as give Capaldi as second chance since he had a lot of terrible scripts to work with. The 12th Doctor wakes up from a coma, with no idea where he is or how he ended up unconscious. Have Jodie's Doctor, the Timeless Child and the Fugitive Doctor all be the same proto-Time Lord, but a separate one from The Doctor. The Timeless Child has become psychically linked to Capaldi's Doctor while he was in the coma, causing her to obtain all of his memories and believe she is the real Doctor. The 12th Doctor has to piece together what actually happened to the universe from the combination of dreams and shared memories then track down the Timeless Child, who is currently in possession of the TARDIS. 12 and the Timeless Child then team up to take down the big bad of the season.

I wasn't quite convinced with the Timeless Child narrative. But the problem is that it is until now the only offered solution to the problem of the Doctor regenerating more than 12 times. I mean the regeneration from Smith to Capaldi just because Clara asked for it is even less convincing. Probably the whole Timeless Child thing was only invented to give a better explanation, and one has to admit - it is. So any idea to fix the bad storytelling of the Timeless Child should also come up with a suggestion to explain all the regenerations from Smith on. Until we have one we shouldn't try to fix the only one we have, however bad it may be.

The thing is the idea of the timeless child is really cool. A nice way to slot it to something that backtracks in a way is making them a product of Timelord Science. Like in the early early days, when they first found the the vortex and started playing with it. A member of one of the main houses the Doctor’s Chapter went mad when they were exposed and starts exposing their children to it and one gets sucked in. Spit out in the past as a super proto-timelord (like River Song on crack). After they pluck the regeneration ability out, they suck their memories out and chuck them in a loom in one of chapter’s houses and make up a different creation story to cover the horror that had happened. Something like that idk

I don't hate the timeless child, but I definitely think that it should be the Master's past split amongst other beings. The hidden away memories subconsciously influencing the doctor's eccentric behaviour since it does still exist. Merge the Nightmare child with the timeless child.

I think the timeless child should be Susan. Finding out what the Time lords did to her over millennia, he opted to rescue her and leave Gallifrey. The Time Lords had already gotten what they needed from Susan... so they didn't pursue them.

My retcon would be a bit different. We know of one person who was born with regenerations, and she isnt even Gallifrayan, Melody Pond. River Song should be the timeless child. The fact she gave the Doctor all her regeneration energy in Lets Kill Hitler even explains why the Doctor was misidentified as the timeless child. The Doctor could even have inherited the infinite regenerations. Also with Romana we know Time Lords can alter species, so Id have 8 specifically be half human.

They should have made the timeless child a different time lord that the doctor or just reconed it to be a lie from the master cos he is a untrustworthy being and he is evil compared to the doctor’s good.he is Loki to the doctor’s Thor and moriarty to the doctor’s Sherlock and why should the doctor believe what the master said. The Timeless Child isn't the first time Doctor Who has toyed with the idea of "the Doctor" predating the First Doctor. The concept of "The Other" has been around for decades. An ancient, possibly Non-Gallifreyan entity which provided Gallifreyans the means to regenerate and develop Time Lord civilization. I think the Timeless Child is adapted that concept loosely.

Doesn't need to be fixed, it's what you do with Who. As much as I love RTD and Moffat, both were too reverential to the idea of Who. The 'mythos' exist to prop up, not dictate stories. Just needs a better writer to execute it's potential, reconcile it with what came before (but not retcon the new mythology) and we're set for another fifty + years.

I hated the timeless child thing... I still kinda do, but there is something interesting about it. When the Doctor turned himself human there were underlying Doctor abilities that came out every once in a while like the ball. While the time lords are very smart and such they never really seemed to be on the level of the Doctor. What if the doctor was something else before, something way beyond a time lord. They didn't just take the memories in the watch they made the doctor into a time lord, two hearts limited regen... all that stuff. The doctor being smarter is left over from something else they were. I like this idea, and could open the door to bigger villains... other dimensional beyond timelord villains and the doctor has to choose which side.

The doctor doesn't have infinite regenerations they were taken away by the time Lords the doctor turning into a child and becoming William Hartnell doctor eventually regenerating into Matt Smith incarnation granted a new regeneration cycle so another 12 until 14 or or whoever opens the Watch that's when they get infinite regenerations

Personally, I think the Doctor being the timeless child is a very sound idea, it’s just that chibnall handled it very poorly. There could have been some acknowledgment by the Doctor that they always felt they were more than just an ordinary time lord, but this isn’t what they expected. Also, the whole deal with the Doctor seemingly being from another part of the universe or another universe entirely is intriguing, but I highly doubt that will be explored with chibs gone. Although I think Davies expressed support for the idea

It entirely ruins the point of the Eleventh Doctor getting regenerations so I wholeheartedly disagree with you. The best version of giving the Doctor more backstory was where one of the creators of Timelord society reincarnated into the Doctor. That adds backstory without making him any more special in concept than a regular time lord. The Doctor is special because he chose to be different, making him super special (even more special than the most powerful mortal race in the universe) is just incredibly stupid.
