The actors tried, but there just wasn't enough in the script to sell the romance. Again, the Shobogans are more her speed. If they were going to leave Leela on Gallifrey, she should have been with them. They could also have returned Leela to the Sevateem, ready to take her position as their leader.

The Invasion of Time is one of my favorite Doctor Who stories of all time. It's a shame Leela couldn't had better farewell. When Doctor Who returned almost 14 years ago, I thought Leela died in the Time War on Gallifrey when it was destroyed by The War Doctor. In the 2012 Companion Chronicles audio production "The Catalyst" it was revealed Leela had somehow survived Gallifrey's destruction at the end of the Time War and had been captured and interrogated for information about Gallifrey by a race of warriors called the Z'Nai which Leela later died in the Z'Nai's prison. Leela is one of the best companions in the history of the series. Now The Doctor went back and save Gallifrey, it would be good if Louise Jameson could come back as Leela and hopefully the character's fate will be properly resolved.

This wasn't how Leela was going to leave at the end of the story. Originally, Leela was to die saving The Doctor's life from a Sontaran. It was changed because it was felt Leela's death would traumatize small children and younger viewers.

This was only a few year after Mary Whitehouse had torn strips off the show , and its possible that Hinchcliff was moved on as a result of her superficial morale stance , however (petty she did not prob the morale lives of certain BBC entertainers at the time with as much vigor , like Saville .) Williams was brought in to dilute the violence and his tonic was university comedy for the kids I'm not surprised that Lela got such a soggy clap trap ending, the character has been ill served since the Horror of Fang Rock.

The Doctor was surprised to see that Leela fell in love with Andred,then captain of the guards on Gallifrey and decided to stay there to marry him. Too bad that The Doctor couldn't stay long enough to see the wedding and he was wise to make K-9 Mark 2 in case the original K-9 decided to stay on Gallifrey to look after Leela.

(I an choosing to completely ignore everything after series 10) So the timeline probably goes : -born on Gallifrey to Leela and Andred -joins Faction Paradox under the name Intrepid -travels back to the Dark Times and becomes the Other -marries Patience and have 13 kids with her. -their oldest child has a daughter named Arkytior, later known as Susan Foreman. -The Other threw himself into the loom machines. -The Doctor was loomed (reborn) -At some point the First Doctor traveled back in time on the day of Susan's birth. He saved Patience by ending her away into a primitive TARDIS, and rescues new-born baby Arkytior by bringing her back into the future with him and raising her. -and then he eventually leaves Gallifrey with Susan and the Hand of Omega.

It went wrong this time around because the producers didn't think Leela's actress would actually quit and so half-assed the obligatory romance subplot, then didn't have time to fix it when it turned out she really did want out.

I did think it was strange though that DR Who went back to galifrey on numerous occasions and never met up with Leela again! Now she can't return as she's dead. She was living on galifrey, and then Russell T Davies blew up the planet in these Time Wars, which was a stupid plot, but there you go. What were they thinking to do that? I would have loved to see more galifrey stories.

It‘s odd that the Doctor didn‘t tell Leela that the 1st time there were humans on Gallifrey they were sent back to their own times on Earth and that their memories of all their advenvres with him were erased,except for their 1st adventure. The Time Lords must‘ve decided to let Leela stay on their planet beause it was the 3rd time the Doctor saved Gallifrey.

This was decades before RTD turned the show into a yank pleasing soap opera I'm pleased such a generic scene was not filmed and apart from Susan its seems proble that the Doctor an alien would not invest such conventional sentiment in his emotions relating to his companions , which would then raise questions as to why he put them in harms way week after week in his multiple escapades of danger and uncertainty.

@@ernestinemaloy6752 I know this is an old reply, but that wasn't standard procedure when they left: in the original series, only Jamie and Zoe had their memories wiped, and that wasn't the Doctor's doing. Jamie even had his memories restored if you believe the 'Season 6B' theory, so it would only be one person in the original 26 seasons.
