There is a behind the scenes (probably an episode of Doctor Who Confidential) which tells the story about when who knew what about the Face of Boe. No one in the cast knew before they got the scripts. Then David read to the end and saw it. He kept asking John if he had read the end yet, but he hadn't. He kept bugging John to read it. Finally John read it and came running to David's trailer, banged on the door, then yelled that he read it! He loved it!

I always feel really bad for the whole Jones family after this story -- not only did they have to watch the Doctor weep over the man who terrorized them (and the world) horrifically for a yeah (which would make me like the Doctor LESS, honestly), but they also have to deal with the PTSD from all that they went through on the Valiant and can't share that with hardly anyone (except for anyone that was on the Valiant). I mean, it's not like they can go to counseling about it all. Hell, they can't even tell Leo about what's wrong, as he wasn't involved -- so he'll always be the odd one out! And god, that's not even touching on the hella-awkward optics of the Jones family being POCs dressed up in maid/servant clothes working for 'The Master'. 😒 Yeah, I read a fanfic back then that was about Francine that was SO GOOD where they explored some of that -- mostly her trauma from having served the Master throughout 'The Year That Never Was'. And there was the one bit in particular I always remember where there was a song that when it came on while they were still on the Valiant, it would get the Master violently angry and so she'd always have to rush to turn off the song or get beaten or whatever. So, later on, long after the stuff with the Master was over, that song came on the radio at a cafe or something, and poor Francine had a trauma reaction to it, where she felt the overwhelming need to turn off the song somehow and ended up having a massive panic attack because of it. Obviously they would never explore that sort of thing on a show like Doctor Who, but that fic felt SO REAL to me about what Francine's experience was. Martha's family really went through it! 😢

Master was a time lord in Doctor Who series 3 sounds of drums
@Mrazmatmahmood5 жыл бұрын
This is a great three parter to end series 3. A lot people hate this story's resolution, but I like the way the plot was resolved. The idea of words having power and a transmitter being powered by psychic energy was shown in “The Shakespeare Code”. There was also the little boy in “Human Nature”/”The Family of Blood” who had some psychic abilities, which set up the Doctor feeding off of the collective psychic energy of the human race. The Archangel network was also a major part of the finale. As you know, the Master had used it to convince the world he was Harold Saxon and to trust him, so they would vote for him. Then, once he was fully in power he used it to subdue the human race and instil fear, so no one would dare challenge him. The Doctor spent an entire year tuning himself into the system, while Martha travelled the world telling the story of the Doctor in order to bring the world together and give them hope and something to believe in. The entire human race was bound together by the signal emitted by the network, but instead of giving into the fear created by the Master, they thought of one word at the exact same time. The one word that gave them hope, Doctor. The Doctor used the collective psychic energy of 6 billion, magnified by 15 satellites that were a part of the archangel network and he reprogrammed them to beam all of that energy to him and healed and rejuvenated himself. They used the Master's biggest weapon against himself. I thought it was a really clever plot twist. It also glorifies the idea of humans coming together and supporting each other and how much can be achieved with just that, which is an idea that had already been explored in the series previously in the episode (also written by RTD) "Gridlock". You also have to remember the similarities between how the Master came to power and how the Doctor came back to power; they both used stories. Of course, the story the Master created to seduce the world was a total lie and he ultimately used it to create death and destruction. The story Martha told wasn’t the complete truth about the Doctor either though. It was about an idealised version of the Doctor, but in the dystopian world the Master had created the people needed something to hold on to. Anything to inspire some kind of hope in them. In the end even if the version of the Doctor that had been created in the minds of the human race wasn’t really the whole truth, that idea was enough to bring the Doctor back and foil the Master’s plans. That shows how the Master would tell lies to bring death and destruction, but the Doctor would tell them for the ultimate good of the universe. It also displays the power of storytelling, which is a great thing to say in a show like this. The religious undertones in that scene are also interesting considering RTD is an atheist. The Doctor was completely powerless and helpless, when he was being held captive by the Master. It’s only through the power the people gave him that he was able rise up and ascend to defeat the Master. It’s as if RTD is saying it’s the faith and belief people have in a God figure that makes them real, that’s what gives them their “power” for want of a better word. Without people, no God would exist; in the end he’s just a story created by us as well. It's just the visual effect of blue glowy, levitating David Tennant looked laughable and incredibly cheesy, which spoils the moment a bit. That's really the only major issue I have with this story though.

Great reaction. I love the little glances Katrina gives at the camera at moments for the fans who know whats coming. Martha is a total bad ass. I want Big Finish to do a stories about her adventures during the year that never was. Also, there is a theory that I have had about the aftermath of this episode. Martha gave The Doctor her phone to keep in case she needed to call him. It would have taken Martha some time to get a new phone number and give it out. How long was The Doctor getting calls for Martha. Were friends calling The Tardis looking for Martha to hang out with? Did The Doctor answer the phone thinking the Earth was in danger only to find out it was some guy giving Martha a booty call? There’s no way this didn’t happen. And you know The Doctor would definitely end up having conversations with some of these people. I hope you two do a reaction for Time Crash.

Everyone keeps saying how you two are great reactors, but lemme really analyze why as someone who’s seen their fair share of reactors. 1. You pay attention: You’d be shocked at the amount of reactors that just stop paying attention to make some joke or comment. You pay attention to what’s happening and, when you have something a bit longer to say, you stop the episode. 2. Personality: So many reactors have these forced “I’m so fun and quirky” personalities that are really grating. But both of you have this natural, fun charm to you that just makes you actually fun to watch. Also, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone who looks at things with such wonder as Paula. When she goes out, does she just go “OH MY GOD LOOK AT THAT ROCK” and stare at it in amazement? 3. Intelligence: Hey look, two people who actually understand what is happening and are capable of analyzing events and discussing them. Do you know the amount of idiots I’ve seen around who are like “Man that was a good episode... Bye!”? 4. Acknowledgement of the past: As a DW fan this is a big one for me. Hearing Katrina say in Utopia that the Master was an old villain was so satisfying. There are so many Doctor Who reactors who don’t know and don’t do the minimal research into the show to even be like “Wait, this show has existed for how long?” Essentially, you’re probably the best Doctor Who reactors I’ve seen and if a cynical and annoying prick like myself can enjoy these videos, you should probably be proud of it because we’re the hardest to please. Also, maybe at some point react to Classic Who? I’d be really interested to see your reactions. I recommend starting with Remembrance of the Daleks (since the first episode or the TV movie are usually the go to’s for people, I thought I’d recommend something that’s a little more involved and fun).

Paula, wait until season 4! No spoilers but this season's finale is like NO OTHER season finale of any Doctor Who series.

Before you start season 4, you might want to mention or show Paula the pilots of 2 certain shows. 😉

A great reaction as always! This is a brilliant and unmatched finale. I just wanted to respond to Paula who replied to my comment on the attitudes of John Smith. Unfortunately the BBC took the video down, so I can’t see the full response or what I had written, and while your response seemed very understanding and not negative, I just wanted to say that it wasn’t directed to either one of you, and I didn’t intend for my comment to be negative if that was the case. I still thought your reaction was great but just wanted to give my opinion on that particular topic. I remember my first point being that there were situations where I thought you were looking too far into it. For example, the headmasters use of the word ‘servant’ was not a racially based term, and also applied for Jenny (However there’s no doubt that his attitude was racially motivated). My main point was just that, unfortunately these views existed and people that grew up with these views were the result of their time and often didn’t know better. But that doesn’t mean the views were right. So I wasn’t saying it’s wrong to be conflicted about the attitudes he had, that’s a good thing. I was saying that it doesn’t necessarily make him a bad person. It’s natural to have an aversion to the character when those views are expressed, but with John Smith it was more ignorance, and that’s how Martha saw much of the racism in this episode. Her responses were perfect and displayed her strength and personality (an aspect lacking from more recent companions, but I wont go there) I think this is important to remember because nowadays, social justice is getting to a point where no reason is seen or accepted for someone holding certain views. The reason doesn’t mean that holding those views is right, but it enables understanding. For example, there are people who have grown up with certain views and have now changed (maybe even decades ago), but are rejected and demonised because certain people don’t accept any reason for holding those views. I think it’s a very dangerous trend that’s growing. I hope my point came across in this very long comment. I was aiming to clear up my points and respond to say that this wasn’t personal or specifically focused on someone in any way. It was to address an issue that may arise for some people when watching this episode, which is the result of recent trends. Maybe this wasn’t an issue for the both of you and I misunderstood, I apologise if that was the case. Anyway, keep up the great videos, series 4 is a big one!

Did this week's Doctor Who reactions get delayed or did you decide to skip a week? No worries regardless, just curious as to what happened?
