Oh dear, the infamous chopped up and edited episode for America. I have no idea why everyone outside the UK has this version but it misses out a lot of important scenes. I haven’t watched the full reaction yet but America cuts out, depending on where you watch it: The ‘planet earth is closed’ part from the very beginning where space lane traffic is advised to stay away from earth as humans are entering extinction. The Master doing a Scissor sisters dance routine where we first establish the power dynamics between everyone on the ship, the daily routine and we first see Lucy’s bruises and the fake smiles and complete look of contempt she gives the master, the first signs that she’s being abused by the master and is beginning to despise him. The part where Martha and Tom get stopped by the toclafane and she explains about the perception filter key and how it works. The Jones family all sitting around in their cell, talking about which one of them will kill the master about 20 minutes in. Tish mentions that the master made them stand there on deck and watch the islands of Japan burn. So for that, she will be the one to kill his. Martha’s Mom and Dad also kiss. It really sheds light on what a protective and broken mother Francine is. But it’s cut. Martha telling the refugees about the master is even cut in some places, the first time you see it is in her speech on the valiant with the little flashback At the end when time is restored, Martha’s mom picks up the gun and threatens to kill the master, she breaks down and the doctor talks her out of it. She hugs the doctor. In fact you can see Martha hugging her mom in the background just before Lucy shoots him. That’s because she’s just broken down after threatening to kill him Martha has a small moment before the face of boe reveal where she gives flowers to the professor to say she doesn’t blame her for grassing her up to the master. The professor has no idea what she means though as of course time was reversed and she doesn’t remember any of it They’re all cut from the American versions for some reason
@BritanyBinges Жыл бұрын
Yeah, this was an interesting one when I released the full reaction on Patreon. I had no idea things had been cut and it made it difficult for those outside the US to watch-along with my reaction. :-/ I'm assuming they cut it down since our shows have to fit in very specific time slots with a certain amount of time allotted for commercials/advertising. I'm guessing it wasn't enough to fill a 90-minute slot, so they cut it down to fill a 60-minute slot (which usually has about 18 minutes of commercials/ads).

@@BritanyBingesand it’s a shame as as far as I know there doesn’t seem to be a way of watching those scenes outside of the dvd or UK. America seems unaware that they’re gone and there’s no ‘deleted scene’ video on KZbin to watch them as they’re not actually deleted. You’ll have to come to the UK some time and make a bbc iPlayer account for the day 😂 There’s no adverts on the BBC so sometimes if an episode needs an extra 5 minutes or 10 there’s no real issue as the next show will still air immediately after and there’s no obligations to squeeze in sponsors or ads. I couldn’t imagine trying to watch doctor who live on bbc America as it just isn’t made with adverts in mind I remember visiting the US and watching a funny show I liked on bbc America and it was on for an hour each night. I made a note to carry it on when I got home to the UK. Back in the UK I found out the shows episodes were actually 28 minutes long and the rest had just been filled with ads. I don't know if anyone's mentioned this before but just in case you don't know yet; there's some scenes that were cut from the version you're watching. the most notable ones were 1. A music sequence near the beginning of the Master wheeling the Doctor's wheelchair around the valiant and just generally being a nuisance as he dances and sings along to "I Can't Decide" by the Scissor Sisters 2. After time is reversed, Martha goes to the university Professor Docherty works at and gives her a bouquet of flowers, saying that she forgives her (the professor is understandably very confused as to who Martha is) 3. Martha calls Tom's phone just to see if he's alive, when he answers it, she promptly hangs up, just happy to know he's okay. (Tom is equally confused as the Professor was)

We meet new characters, and see some old faces. I know there is the return of a character who most people found very annoying, but who goes on to become perhaps the greatest companion of all time. The next series is great, and that run became the PEAK of NuWho in the UK. Doctor Who regularly pulled in 10 million viewers (1/5 of uk population at the time- which is insane considering the number of people watching together in one household). Not bad for a show that was once the shame of the BBC. Wow, there is so much greatness to come. The last 6 episodes of this series is undoubtedly the strongest run of stories in DWs 60 year history. See, I get very sad at the Master's death scene in this. Because he first shows up in the 3rd Doctor's run and there's a lot that happens between him and the Doctor. He was created by the showrunners at the time to give the Doctor an enemy who was truly his equal. From there he showed up time and again as the show went on, sometimes an enemy, but shockingly sometimes an ally. They did have their moments of working together, and that wasn't really explained as them knowing each other since childhood before NuWho, but with that context it makes everything that came before mean so much more, you know? They could never be rid of each other, not really. And neither would have it any other way, in the depths of their hearts. It's fitting that the way The Master would finally go out... Is to finally get one over on his old friend. One last screw you. With a smile on his face.

Just on the subject where your talking about the future Doctors that come after Tennant the older guy's name is Peter Capaldi whose one of my favourite Doctors in NuWho I won't say who or name them but some actors who played The Doctor some last longer than 3 seasons some don't depending on whether they want to continue or not or if their contracts expire. It's actually neither confirmed or denied that Captain Jack is the Face of Boe it's hinted that he might be people are still theorising 16 years on whether he is or not though I personally believe that he is. Even though Time Lords have regenerative abilities they can still die and get killed if their injuries is so severe or burnt or shot fatally it can prevent them from regenerating also if there upto their 13th and final life that's the end of them they die unless they get a new set of 12 regenerations thus 13 lives, the whole choosing not to regenerate is only a NuWho thing. I liked the episode but I will say the Doctor where he goes back to being youthful and escapes the cage where he gets all being all God and mighty was abit much I thought and unnecessary. The Toclafane were intended to be the new Daleks kind of..RTD the showrunner at the time originally wasn't going to have the Daleks at all thankfully that didn't happen. Just on that last comment about The Master possibly coming back alive and about it being unrealistic it's Doctor Who it's not suppose to be realistic anything can happen on this show. 😊

You should definitely watch Merlin. Tom Ellis is in it too.

Regarding the "Tom Ellis thing", for me, he will always be the love interest of the character Miranda from the BBC show of the same name, so back then I was excited for him being in Doctor Who for THAT reason! This three-parter is definitely the weakest of all the RTD finales for me, with that order being: S4 finale, S1 finale, S2 finale, S3 finale. There are some redeeming qualities for sure -- the Face of Boe name drop; Martha's independence. But this episode, for me, exposes a flaw of RTD's writing that runs throughout his era: he creates big and grand plot points, and builds tension, but then writes himself into corners, which prevent what I would deem a successful conclusion. Ironically, the paradox machine is not a part of this for me: it makes sense that once the machine is broken, things go back for to how they were before the paradox was in place. My biggest problem is the way that because he writes himself into corners, he has to superhero-ify something or someone to fix it. In the series 1 finale, this was the Bad Wolf, a character created by the fusion of the two most important parts of Doctor Who -- the TARDIS, the representation of the Doctor; and Rose Tyler, the representation of the humanity that not only grounds him, but drives him to act in the way he does (ergo the opposite way from the Master). The creation of this entity allowed RTD to still be able to say that at the end of it all, it was the Doctor that saved the day, because he took the Time Vortex from Rose, and made the ultimate heroic sacrifice. But that isn't the same here: in this finale, RTD has a tool to bring the Doctor back from his aged state -- the laser screwdriver -- and midway through the episode says: this is too easy, and locks it out, requiring a solution much bigger and grandiose than ever would have been required. I buy that the Doctor could stall the Master as he did, and install himself within the telepathic matrixes of the satellites to remove the influence of the Master's own telepathic control. But RTD's resistance to have someone else help the Doctor, or save the Doctor, is ultimately why this overextension of this plot point becomes so laughable. Would it have been so hard for RTD to have made it so the Doctor, in his very aged state, was too weak to use the laser screwdriver earlier in the episode, or too slow, so that it could have been snatched away from him before he could grab it? So that rather than making it Isomorphic (unable to be used by any person other than the Master), at the moment the Master's plan begins falling apart, Martha -- or maybe even Martha's family band together, or Lucy (imagine that betrayal instead of, or as well as, the one we got!)-- is able to use the laser screwdriver to return him to the Doctor we know? The rest of the episode would have unfolded the same, and the Doctor would still have his moment to shine. I know that to watch a show like Doctor Who one must be able to suspend their disbelief, it's just that for me, the whole 'I am God' moment takes that suspension of disbelief and snaps it in two. On a positive note, I do like, as others have said, the clean break that the episode gives Martha: out of every Doctor Who character, she's the one I feel deserved to be treated better and with more respect, so it's always nice to see this part of the episode. It's also a fitting conclusion to her storyline of training to be a Doctor as in the image of her family, she has patients to care for! You said a lot of what I had to say, so I'm sorry for making you read all of that haha! Thank you for your reaction! I always enjoy watching these along with you!

Dont know if you will see this or not if u havent seen the classic series the master was always a friend and enemy rival since they were kids on galifrey the master wasn't always a pycho killer the time lords made him that way with the drums slowly driving him insane

I am reacting to Classic Who as well. Fortunately, I'm in season 8 over on Patreon so I have met the Master already, but please be careful with the Classic information. Don't want any accidental spoilers. :)

@@BritanyBinges to be sure, it was only a guess -- but what made me think of it is that he was shown earlier in the season and he constantly talked to the Doctor as an old friend. There still are people who think they are not the same person, but Jack had given himself a nick name based upon Boe.
@ftumschk Жыл бұрын
@@hornorsilk2901 Jack didn't give himself that nickname, but I think that the people of Boeshane called him that as a pun on the famous giant head in a tank. After all, Jack was the local boy done good, so he was the "face" of his neighbourhood of Boe(shane).

At least back then Russell T Davies' stance was that the Face of Boe line only works as long as you don't know what to make of it, whether Jack was telling the truth or teasing, and that it should therefore never be confirmed or denied. AFAIK he once stopped a Doctor Who novel from giving confirmation. But with all the Doctor Who media that is out there I am not sure that this has been kept up. I think most of fandom has accepted the idea as cannon, personally I lean no.
@BritanyBinges Жыл бұрын
When I originally released this episode on Patreon, I think someone mentioned that RTD did finally confirm it on like Twitter or something. But, that conversation happened almost a year ago so I couldn't be remembering it incorrectly.

Rewatching the Boe arc (especially Gridlock), after this aired, permanently hits differently when you know who Boe is. In 2007, the executive producer said Jack =Boe, while the showrunner left to the audience to decide, but & in 2020, he confirmed it, so Jack becoming the Face Of Boe is canon and not a trick. With the Time War and all timelords getting wiped out; according to the expanded universe setting during the Time War era, the Daleks modifyed their guns to have regeneration inhibitors (bit like the gun Martha was assembling here but not a decoy) where it didnt matter how many regenerations you had left, you were shot, you were done. With Timelords as a whole, the Doctor getting rid off both Daleks (give or take a few) & Timelords as the last act of the war (based on S1 of New Who), but the Master ran away and became Yana, a while before the war ended.
