The Whisper Men might be one of my favourite creations by Steven Moffat, they’re so creepy and threatening and I wish they were seen again. And I believe Matt Smith gives a Stella performance in this episode especially with the emotional scenes, he adds so much depth. Richard E Grant is always brilliant in everything he is and he performs with such magnitude, and the ending is so perfect.

You are correct that Steven Moffat did ideally want to use the 9th Doctor for the 50th anniversary. However, he kinda knew from the start that Christopher Eccleston wasn't gonna do it. So, according to him, he basically went through the motions of asking Eccleston out of respect but, he never truly expected him to say "yes". (He knew Eccleston's history with the show & figured he wouldn't be ready to come back).

Still one of my favorite episodes of Doctor Who. I love how it both wraps up the season arc while simultaneously setting up the 50th anniversary special. And the emotional beats are just perfect. On a side note, this was my dad's introduction to Doctor Who. He definitely could have picked a less confusing episode to start with (pretty sure it makes almost zero sense out of context), but it was enough to pique his interest and he proceeded to binge all of New Who shortly afterward (he's still working on Classic Who). :)

You are 100% correct about them approaching Christopher Eccleston first before casting John Hurt. I believe Eccleston did consider it for awhile before deciding not to participate. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode when I first saw it, but didn't have the kind of shouting reaction you describe, but I did have that kind of reaction to Night of the Doctor, which kind of came out of nowhere. Can't wait to see you react to that! 🥰

Christopher Eccleston had been blacklisted from the entire BBC and subsidiaries by some higher-up after he left Doctor Who. He couldn't get an acting job in the UK, so he went to America for some time. By the time Moffat asked him back the ban was lifted, but he wasn't ready for that. He's been struggling with anorexia and depression for years, including while they were filming his one season of DW. Anyway I don't like the idea of him being the War Doctor. We see in his first episode when he goes into Rose's house he looks in the mirror and begins examining his new face, because he hasn't seen it before. He had just regenerated before that adventure.
@caitlin3292 жыл бұрын
He also doesn't like the idea of multi-doctor stuff; thinks it's a cash grab etc. I'd probably have rather McGann had been the War Doctor, but John Hurt was good if we had to have an alternative.
@caitlin3292 жыл бұрын
Eccleston isn't coming back anytime soon with RTD and co. returning I don't think. His problems came from that team and the way everything was handled/he was treated. They even announced that he was leaving without giving him prior warning. Then he was blacklisted by the BBC for a while, apparently. It's not just him associating his personal problems with Who; it was the experience itself.

You are correct it was the original intention to bring back Christopher Eccleston as the so called "War" Doctor but declined because he believes his Doctor would never wipe out those millions of people but tbh it was just as well he didn't do it as it wouldn't have made sense anyway considering in the first episode of New Who episode "Rose" when the "Ninth" Doctor comments on his ears in the mirror clearly states he's a new Doctor I wasn't a real fan of the shoehorning they could had just as easily brought back Paul McGann as the "Eighth" Doctor who fought in the Time War that would had made more sense but no they thought let's just shoehorn in an unknown Doctor and screw up the numbers I also don't like the retcon of Clara being the one who told The "First" Doctor to steal the type 40 TARDIS as I always believed over the years that he did it on his own accord. It was nice to see the Classic Doctors back kinda and the return of the Paternoster Gang and of course River Song.
@shauntempley97572 жыл бұрын
I feel the War Doctor works, because the only Doctor that would fight is actually 7. After all, he blew up Skaro's star in a plot in Remembrance Of The Daleks. Every step he took in that serial from landing was a premeditated series of moves, and it was all aimed at that moment. Only that Incarnation would gladly walk through the Time War unaffected by what he sees during the fighting. Once 8 came along, he would never do that because of his previous memories as 7. Almost all of the stories of 7 I have seen are him trying to clean the slate of the past, as if he is preparing for a coming massive conflict.

16:11 - 18:00 Many fans, even I, assumed that the 8th Doctor fought in the time war. But of course the BBC has no sense of nostalgia and very little respect for the classic series. That’s why in the new series they hardly do any flashbacks to the classics.
