Nighthawke70 I’m just really disappointed the actual Gallifrey plot was done in like five seconds after all the build up it had. Don’t get me wrong, loved the special as a send off to David Tennant’s Doctor and John Simm’s master, but that Gallifrey conclusion could have been done better. I mean, after all the build up (and what was essentially an ongoing thing since classic who with the drumming finally getting solved), it got resolved to quickly. I mean borh Rassilon and The Master had zappy hands. The doctor just crashed through the ceiling and had a basic kinda old gun. Rassilon even tried to kill the Doctor AFTER the Doctor shot the machine. What were they just all waiting for him to do something? No matter who he killed or what he shot the link would be broken and his plan failed. That last part was just bad for Rassilon’s character, really needed a more satisfying conclusion to the Gallery plot. I mean we had this huge event that happened and ended in five seconds because no one that started it could be bothered to stop the Doctor (who kept turning his back on them and couldn’t stop either of them from killing him). Well, okay then

I remember the first time I saw this episode. I hadn't yet seen any Classic Who; I had started with the 9th Doctor, so all I knew about the Time Lords was what the Doctor had let slip over the seasons. To me, they were ancient and mysterious, mythical and nearly all-powerful. The Universe had been tamed and bent to their will long ago, when the Time Lords went to and fro about it as Gods. I had the distinct impression that humanity was like a weed that had cropped up in a garden which had long since ceased to be tended. Even the many great and powerful alien species we had encountered so far in the show, such as the Judoon and Sontarans, I felt were no more than petty feudal tyrants grabbing power in the wake of the Roman Empire's collapse. Should they ever return, no one would be able to withstand them. This universe belonged to the Time Lords, and everyone living in it at present had merely forgotten that fact. Needless to say, Rassilon's narration here was chill-inducing. I suppose I sort of vaguely recognized it as a possibility in the back of my mind, but I didn't know for certain what was about to happen. So when he dropped that line, "This was the day, the Time Lords returned." I just about went insane. I think I may have woken up my neighbors yelling "HOLY SHIT! HOLY SHIT! IT JUST GOT REAL!"

1) I’m tired of this Moffat sucks RTD rules thing I have to keep seeing in EVERY RTD era comment section. It’s old, it’s dumb, and quite frankly it’s ignorant of either of there actual runs. I mean did you not watch the end of the end of time? That entire Gallifrey plot gets resolved in two seconds when the Doctor (who just fell through the ceiling form a high speed space ship) gets up and starts point his gun. Because neither of the guys with zappy death hands feel like doing anything and just wanna let their evil plan fall apart. I mean the “God-like entities” just stood there (Rassilon even chose to try and kill the doctor AFTER he already shot the machine and stopped there plan). I mean this was a huge event that technically encompassed classic who (drumming got solved), and it was resolved by the Doctor doing basically nothing. WHAT AMAZING FLAWLESS WRITING. Come on, both Moffat AND RTD are great writers, but neither are perfect and both have bad episodes. I loved this special for the character focus and for it being 10’s end, but the story and Gallifrey plot here needed work 2) These “God-like entities” are stuck on a burning planet and about to get their asses handed to them by the Daleks. The closet god like one is the doctor 3) THIS IS ONLY THE HIGH COUNCIL. This should be the most obvious and they are even referenced for being in session during the Day of the Doctor when Gallifrey is about to fall. In Moffat’s take on the timelords we’ve seen mostly the citizens, the people living on the outskirts, and the soldiers. Here we saw ONLY the high council. Of course they look god like. They are MADE to look god like. It’s the high council of the planet. It’s basically how powerful the wealthy elites look vs everyone else. In one episode Peter Capaldi’s 12th Doctor says that all the old rich men go hide away and “make decisions” while their children go off and die in the war they started. Well, these are ALL the old rich men (and women because “timelords are way beyond societal gender issues” - also 12; probably because they can be both). 4) Moffat’s Timelords are firstly those who cannot hide while their planet is being destroyed by Daleks and then in hell bent they are ALL post time war (and post stuck in a pocket dimension and frozen). I mean the fact that the planet wasn’t still on fire and burning was applause worthy. 5) Chibnall’s timelords can apparently be destroyed by the master on a whim, so you really shouldn’t have complained

And so it came to pass, on Christmas Day, that the human race did cease to exist. But, even then, the Master had no concept of his greater role in events, for this was far more than humanity's end. It is simple, having watched Original Dr Who. This was the pivotal moment at which Dr Who could become a show worthy of heights that would not be reached by the majority, a shift in the series that could have set us down a path of greatness. A unification of modern filming techniques, our openness to darker topics and the mastery of storytelling of old. Yet no. They destroyed our hopes, and for what? Social justice nonsense and the childish view of heroism that prevails in the series now. The Doctor that did what had to be done to end a time war, actions akin to Dresden and Hiroshima. A complex story that questioned our understanding of right and wrong and challenged us to think was scrapped for this "life is living in castles on the clouds" nonsense that rules storytelling today. A facsimile of life.
