before they added the drums to the master their original story was so much sadder. When they met for the first time after Galifray the Doctor was on life number 3 while the Master was on number 12. The Doctor was confused why his old friend was evil now but the Master kept promising him it would happen to him too one day. Imagine meeting someone again after 500 years and the first thing he says is he has died 11 times. I'm not saying the master is right, but I understand why he does not care about anyone but himself anymore. The Master and the Doctor will never see eye to eye again because the master is so much older and has suffered so much more, and now that the doctor has seen what can happen to him he will never let it. If the master didn't exist, than the doctor probably would have gone mad before his 12th life too.
