Doctor Who: The Five Doctors Effects Comparison

In 1995, The Five Doctors received new material, re-edited scenes, a new 5.1 sound mix and new CGI effects for its original DVD release. It was re-released in 2008 alongside the original broadcast version with a wealth of bonus material and the 1995 Special Edition. Here is a comparison of the updated footage with the original footage.
Also while the broadcast version was sourced from a DVD, the Special Edition comes from my 4K upscale, hence the difference in quality.
Doctor Who is a BBC owned property, the Daleks are owned by the Terry Nation Estate, the Cybermen are ownership of Kit Pedler & Gerry Davis and the Master is the property of the Robert Holmes Estate. I do not claim to be the owner of these properties.

Most of the effects shots you have labeled as 1995 are actually from the 2008 DVD. The 3D time scoop was modelled by me. But almost all the effects (Lightning hitting the cybermen, floor effects, companions fading) and sound was done by Brendan Sheppard. I mainly did stuff for the Ties that Bind DVD extra.

I do like the original version of the fourth Doctor being freed, but because now Shada has been completed it makes more sense for him to be returned to the exact spot he was abducted from so he can go on with the Shade adventure oblivious.

I like the idea that in the original timeline, Shada happened with no trouble, then Borusa's interference caused the Fourth Doctor, Romana, and K9 to forget that it hadn't happened, and then the Eighth Doctor had to pick up the pieces. So that it simultaneously both happens and doesn't happen.

The obelisk version more accurately conveys the sense of terror The Doctor must have felt… seeing The Time Scoop means that something has gone catastrophically wrong because The Death Zone has been reactivated.

I watched the original first, so I have a soft spot for it. But the new effects are a great help to the story. The voice change for Rassilon always confused me, I guess they wanted him to be more imposing?

To me, the original Rassilon was clearly inspired by "the man behind the curtain" so to speak. His curled mustache is similar to that of the Wizard of Oz, and his general appearance seemed to be one of a "genie in a bottle," so the original voice was obviously to fit that idea. The SE version seems out-of-character based on his appearance, and was changed to make him seem more menacing. Like many special edition changes in other franchises, this change again failed to take into consideration the full context. The ultimate goal for anyone braving the dangers of the Death Zone and reaching Rassilon's tomb was immortality, and the legend frames it as a benign gift bestowed upon winners of the game. This also suggest that Rassilon himself was a benevolent, charitable "god." That said, his original voice fits with this narrative -- he is depicted as the "Wizard of Oz" or "genie in a bottle." He isn't *_supposed_* to sound menancing, because the audience is meant to believe as Borusa did - that Rassilon was a benign Time Lord who granted the gift of immortality to those he considered worthy. In the 1995 version, his ominous voice doesn't inspire trust, but rather malevolence; anyone with half a brain would immediately be suspicious of some menacing head promising immortality....

I've always adored this serial, the Special Edition DVD is one of my favourites, the abundance of special features is simply stellar. Also, the '95 special effects are astounding, the original has its charm but the updated edition is better in everyway IMO.

The Doc's outfit doesn't change, as the Doc was punting, he discarded his scarf, jacket and put them in the punt, when he's talked about, the image is from a different part of the narrative after he had put those items back on.

Always love this story. I’m very very old 😆 and this was the only episode of Doctor Who that we recorded on tape (Betamax!) from the television meaning that I was able to watch it over and over again.

Is the original version available anywhere? Obviously, since you or someone managed to put this together. I remember when this was on PBS in the US. I didn't watch it then but previews/trailers of that scene ran for weeks. I had never heard of the show and for years afterward that was all I knew about it. Just that one short clip of an old man (the First Doctor, but I didn't know that) seeing this weird trapezoid thing in the sky and trying to run before it did a Phantom Zone on him. It made such an impression that when I watched the actual episode earlier I knew that wasn't how I remembered it. When I saw this just now it clicked so distinctly, especially when he is rendered 2D and it flips him, it took me right back to 1983. Even for the time it was a cheesy effect, but forty years later and that's still in my head. Thanks for uploading it!

I just wanted to say: love this video comparing the two versions. I also wanted to say: I think the updated version is definitely far superior to the original. I don't mind the original, but I first watched the updated version and is by far my favourite version. Not only with the lightning strikes on the cybermen or the Rassilon voice change but also with the added shots at the beginning of the corridors AND the reverb on Borusa saying NO when putting on the ring. Those extra details are, I think, what makes this special.... so.... SPECIAL.

I'm one of those people who prefers the original effects for the time scoop. With all due respect to Rob Semenoff, I think the original effect--just a clean, simple black triangle--has aged better than the newer, 3D effect, and I find the flat, empty blackness more eerie and foreboding than the newer effect. Something about it suggests that if you get caught by it, if you go into it, you might never come out again (like a black hole). Also, many thanks to DanTheMan for posting this. I haven't seen the original effects in decades and it's nice to see them the way I remember then when I originally watched this episode.

I'm kinda mixed on the new FX for 2023 version. I like the new cybermen gun FX and that they ditched the dalek blowing up in slow mo like in the 90s version. But dispointed it's not the exstended version like the 95 one. Also not keen on how they keep the 4th Doctor being freed via a random clip from Shada. I prefer the 90s version were it shows the 4th doctor being returned to his Gondola.

I wonder if there’ll be a 3rd fx revisit when this gets the blu ray treatment. I think the original fx concept for the time scoop/ obelisk was pretty neat (cheap version of Superman’s phantom zone pane), that could be redone and get rid of that horrible clear turd effect and the TARDIS dematerialisations at the end, ditto the clear turd and try again.

The Five Doctors Special Effects Edition will always be the only one I will always watch over the original. I grew up with the Special Edition (The Five Doctors was one of my very first Classic stories) and the effects are not distracting and feel possible at the time. This Special Edition seems to be the definitive version of The Five Doctors, with more clips, better effects and enhanced audio (Besides the original effects are quite poor. They’ve aged worse then most effects from the time)

I really prefer the original multiple TARDIS ending. It's fun to see them all going into what looks like the same TARDIS, but then having the surprise of realizing it's not. The TARDIS is full of tricks -- very Doctor Who. And if they're all transported out of there by the time scoop then they didn't need to go into the TARDIS at all. It could have picked them up where they stand.

Thanks for posting! I wish they could have figured out the three TARDISes dematerializing effect, instead of replacing it with the swirly time scoop. Even though the end result was cheese, the 1983 idea was much cooler and makes more sense with the 5th Doctor's dialogue. Just before the drag and drop flyaway -- which is not how the TARDIS dematerializes anyway -- I thought they were just going to fade it out three times. But I'm guessing they didn't have a an image of the set without the TARDIS. I wonder if they could redo that effect now with a CG rendering. Or do an effect that suggests the TARDISes dissolving into each respective Doctor's Time Vortex -- if you're trying to find an effect that wouldn't stick out as impossible for 1983.

I especially agree about the original TARDIS departures, not that the effect was that great, but I liked the concept. I like the idea that the Doctor's TARDIS, whenever and wherever it is, is always the Doctor's TARDIS, in any of his incarnations, like in the "Day of the Doctor" when the TARDIS seemed to get confused about which console room she should display when she had 3 incarnations of the Doctor inside her at the same time, and the Eleventh Doctor was able to stabilize it as his console room even though they had entered the Tenth Doctor's TARDIS. It also seems to fit what Idris said about existing throughout all of time and space and having "about 30" console rooms even though the Doctor hasn't changed it that many times.

I’m torn between the two versions. I remember watching it on first broadcast, and the original VHS release was the first Dr Who VHS I ever owned and watched it until it wore out. I like most of the new effects, although I was never fond on the ‘Mr Whippy’ time scoop (that being said, it was still superior to the black triangle). But I didn’t like the any they messed with Rassilons voice. The worst part for me was the additional scenes and the way that some scenes were edited in a different order. This also necessitated some new additions to the musical score, and some of my favourite musical cues were dropped altogether. Alternative versions of some scenes were used which were inferior to the original (which is probably why they weren’t used in the first place) and the pace wasn’t as strong in the newer edit. I’n my ideal world I’d like the original edit to be released but with the updated effects, with a newer version of the time scoop that takes advantage of 21st century technology.

@@bangerbangerbro It was originally released, in a shorter version, on Betamax and VHS in the 80s. My copy was the version released on VHS in 1990. The special edition, with the new edit and special effects, was released in 1995 on VHS in a box set with Kings Demons (which also had a rather nice album to put the postcards that were being given away with the VHS releases that year). It was later re-released on DVD. It wasn’t until 2008 that a new DVD release came out that allowed us to see the original version on DVD for the first time (although they did still accidentally leave in a scene used in the special edition which was cut out of the original broadcast with the captain of the guard carrying his helmet with a big feather in, which was never seen prior to the 1995 version)

Not to be picky but there is a sound effect missing here. The tune played by the 5th Doctor on the Harp of Rassilon. I am not sure when it was altered but my 2008 version has a completely different tune from the 1983 version which a taped off the TV when it was orignally aired & play the video to death untill the tape snapped! LOL! Its good to compare them though. Thank you!

I’ve only watched the 83 original, to me there is something to be said about extended editions with new effects, whilst as an example I much prefer Aliens extended cut that’s because nothing is altered beyond what they could have accomplished in 86, here there is over a decades advancement of technology and as such It feels less like and extended cut and instead like a George Lucas special edition

Most of the special edition footage was a nice inclusion - except for the opening after the title sequence. I much prefer the original opening on the new console being buffed up by the Fifth Doctor as opposed to the yawn inducing shots of corridors in the tomb of Rassilon.

I think that on the commentary of the original edit, Peter Moffat bemoans this as well and says they ruined his story and made it boring... I know this comment is a year old but I find that those "yawn inducing shots of corridors" are meant for a creepy feeling when taking a peak into those empty corridors filled with nothing but fire and atmosphere. Also, I think they added this in because even though Doctor Who was always meant to be a kids/family show... they always try to put some creepy vibe within the scenes. Personally, I loved those added shots but I can understand why people may find them boring.

Given the choice I would continue to watch the original version, but that's the one I grew up with. I dislike the new timescoop intensely and Rassilon's voice no longer fits - it's a monster's voice where there is no monster. It reminds me of Sylvester's Gods of Ragnarok and Rassilon should not sound like them.

Prefered the special editions handling of the 4th Doctors return (rather than getting up from lying on the floor) and the mulitple tardis's look a bit silly in the original imho. I also preffered the newer time scoop affect when it first came out but now I agree it looks more dated. Can we get a 3rd version with the best of both plus the 4k upgrade, and possibly frame rate removal on the studio bits. And maybe get Timothy Dalton in for a day too reshoot Rasilon!:-)

Much like the 1997 Star Wars effects, the effects here are starting to look very dated and very "90's CGI." As much as I love the additional scenes, I hope that the inevitable bluray release will go back and revisit the effects...perhaps with view to making then more like the originals but slightly improved.

It's a bit of a conceited wank to think you can go back and "improve" a thing just cos you want to make it look cooler. So what, it used effects at the time that aren't "cool" enough today? Well guess what, in 20 or 30 years those "cool" effects are just as laughable and silly. Stay with the original and leave it alone. It's like suddenly deciding that Seargeant Pepper's needs an extra 2 minutes of John and Paul talking before the song starts. FFS just leave it alone. I really l like the old flat 2d black triangle timescoop. Yes it's like Superman. That's part of what makes it cool. Revising things is stupid.
