The Invasion was simply an outstanding 2nd Doctor story in many ways. Kevin Stoney was superb as Vaughn, the Cybermen were at there best and who could forget the iconic scene of them marching steadily down St Paul's Cathedral. The interplay of cat and mouse between the Doctor, Vaughn and Packer were also quite well handled with Troughon's Doctor continually outwitting them both. I do agree however that this story would have been tightened up considerably with 2 less episodes and the better for it. Still this one gets an 8 out of ten from me!

While my favourite Cybermen are the Mondasians, this is my favourite Cyberman story... even though the villain is technically Tobias Vaughn, not the Cybermen. I might prefer the Mondasian costumes, but I think these ones are better for practicality reasons. The Mondasians were big and clumsy costumes so I can see why they got the upgrade they did and I think these are simplistic and work just as well. The character of Isobel is so good, I have to remind myself she’s not a recurring character and the rapport she establishes with Zoe is really fun to see. Patrick Troughton and Frazer Hines are great as always. Two, Jaimie and Zoe are easily the quintessential Troughton era TARDIS crew.

i completely disagree about this story being too long, it doesn’t waste a second and it flies by. i really don’t see your point about part 4 being padded out. they rescued zoe and isobel and needed to make an escape in a helicopter. there’s no time to see the cyberman. the reveal wouldn’t have made an impact if it were a quick introduction and then getting the fuck out of there 8 parts is perfect for this story. parts 1-4 really create a mysterious atmosphere and makes international electromatics and vaughn an equal threat to the cybermen, any less episodes then vaughn would seem like just some random guy. the obvious reason for the lack of the unit rescue of watkins is budget but it works for me. he said that they were in and out and having him just recount the events, sweating and puffing shows the power of unit, it is their first appearance, we need to see how cool they are

I have chills rewatching all the scenes with Tobias Vaughn. He has such a fantastic presence as a villain. It almost doesn't matter that this is weak story for the Cybermen as Tobias and the general tone of the story make up for it completely. And yes the direction in the first animated episode is so good. It just makes such a good use of its black and white nature to really set the dark tone. I remember first watching the animated episodes on DVD in the mid 2000s and being taken aback by how good they were. Watching this in sequence with the rest of Troughton's third series it really is striking how different it is and how much of it is setting up the style for the Third Doctor series.

Another of the three or four best classic Cybermen stories, while I love the Daleks & Doctor Who wouldn't exactly be Doctor Who without them but the classic Cybermen have always been my favourite, I guess that's why I like the Star Trek's Borg so much because they remind me of the Cybermen, same with the Cylons from classic Battlestar Galactica, which reminds me, I once contacted Universal Pictures and asked if it was possible the BBC could use the Cylons as a guest villain in a story where the Doctor thinks they're dealing with the Cybermen only for the enemy to turn out to actually be the Cylons, what a plot twist that would be... To my surprise, Universal Pictures replied that it was possible for Doctor Who to use them. :)

To me the cliffhanger of Ep 6 will always be the best one, I mean it's one of the most iconic cliffhangers in the classic series, Probably one of the most iconic cliffhangers in all of Cybermen stories in general, The more times I see the cliffhanger it still creeps me out Today.
