I have a memory of the Cybermen being stopped by ?? which made foam spray out of their packs on the front of them. Is my 40+ year old recall right or am I confused? Or both!!

You are right. It's Toberman who ripped open a Cybermen's breathing apparatus from its chest causing it to foam which I found amazing when I first watch it on VHS as an 8 year old. Morris Barry claimed he got a ticking off for that by the BBC high ups.
