Even if he was not supposed to be The Master, I totally think that Edward Brayshaw could have carried that role. He had the same charisma and elegance that Delgado was famous for, and his voice and mannerisms is almost a fusion between Delgado and Ainley.

Kills me to think that if they flicked a switch, we could have had The War Games in colour... The BBC had started replacing the b&w cameras with colour cameras in preparation for 1970's change to colour tv. The cameras used for this story were colour video cameras, but they recorded this story in b&w. (Even more upsetting if you understand about the colour signal that they were able to use to restore several Pertwee stories - if this signal had been captured onto the War Games b&w tapes, they could have recreated the colour image, but they had the option turned off; or at least that's how I've heard it explained...)

@@Benjiesbeenbetter. It's a bit dull, that was shot in studio 1 that was fitted with colour camera at the time, most of War Games was shot in studio 4 and 8 with the older camera still fitted.

Origins of Whoinverse characters often have different layers often, though some stories or history of one character differs from his or hers first appearance, but sometimes there's more mystery even if their name remains the same. Time Lords are the mystery of the Doctor Who stories where and when they begin and which face they will become, but consider what is likely one time lord could play a dual position in any time or multiple realities and hide in plane sight. The Master and including others like himself can take on any identity in history or seal faces from anywhere. The Master was a friend of the young man who eventually became The Doctor they it is believed to be around the same age, but it could be intriguingly possible that it is something different to the actual events. He, The Master may of been a few years older and met himself as an older man, and that caused a paradox. This could have changed his timeline slightly, meaning the eventually Master did meet a different doctor in his second regeneration, and they didn't know each other, but there was something in between this event where something felt similar between them. This episode may be an earlier source story for another timeline story because of the War Games, which led a certain Master appearance in the following years. But curiously, this story also reveals the story of the Time Lords and the planet Gallifrey. In the future, the source of The War Games did return, and oddly, the Master neither recalled that or did The Doctor's address from their previous supposedly encounter if that actual happened, or is yet to happen. You see that original story, maybe something waiting to happen again. Time is the answer? Gallifrey ( Time Wars-War Games ) stolen history?

I think that's the main theory that when the war chief was killed, he became the master

I would say very few people think he's the Master. He's evil that's about it in common. And if the writers wanted that to be the same character they could have easily mentioned it when 3 and the Master met.

The idea of the War Chief being the Master had been toyed with in a lot of early expanded media but it's been generally accepted nowadays that they are separate characters. He was a bit older than the Doctor and the Master and was the first one of their Timelord Group to leave Gallifrey. He also ends up dead sometime after the events of The War Games so it definitely isn't The Master.
