This is the problem with the writing in this era, too cliché. If you write a cliché scene where Dan insists on going in alone, when it's obviously a bad decision, then you're forced to write a cliché scene in which he gets put before a firing squad and somehow survives against all probability. The bad writing in the first scene neccesitates the bad writing in the second. The scene that bothered me was the Crimean general blowing up all the Sontaran ships with powderkegs. How did he get the explosives in place without being noticed? How is it that mere powderkegs can blow up giant alien spaceships? If he could do that, why didn't he do it a long, long time ago? That would've been a down for me.

So my theory the big bads are beings/species from that time and doctor was also one of them (as in one of the archaic beings not necessarily the same species as them) and there were enemies, then insert the timeless child ark etc

I think it should've been an Up for the Star Trek-style rank pins on the main Sontaran commanders. They've even added a bit of Sontaran design to them by giving them the same lattice design their landing/attack pods have on their ships. Also, I liked the continuation of the mystery behind why the TARDIS is breaking-up and malfunctioning. I know Swarm said something at the end about it being connected to what he's doing in the Temple but it's just amazing design work having all these weird crystalline struts, cables and goo sticking out all over the console room.

One line I absolutely loved was when the Doctor said to the General "Sometimes men like you make me wonder why I bother with humanity", because that line kind of confirms Gwen's assumption in Miracle Day, that the Doctor isn't there to help them because "sometimes he must look at the earth and turn away in shame" (or smth along those lines) and I just love this tiny confirmation (even though it probably wasn't even planned)

One big down from me, there were about a dozen Sontarans on the street when they spotted and started to chase Dan, but suddenly, his mum and dad save him by knocking out only 2 of them! Where did the rest go? you can see behind his mum and dad the street he came from. Also, just how long did Mary Secole stay in that spot to have observed the cycle of the Sontarans, we know she'd observed the 27 hour/7.5 minute cycle from the captured Sontaran, but to then realise that ALL of them went through the same cycle at precisely the same time, she must have been there at least a couple of days. I wonder if the Temple of Atropos is related to the Ghost Monument. One thing I noticed is that the Temple has a similar vibe and aesthetic to the ruins on the planet Desolation, from the Ghost Monument. Not only that, but when the Morai sort of glitch out, they look like a silhouette made of old sheets that REALLY made me think back to the Remnants, the sheet creatures that were also from the Ghost Monument. I think Swarm actually refers to them as the "remnants of the Morai" or something along those lines. And in The Ghost Monument, the Remnants were able to see in the Doctor's mind and that's where we got our first mention of the Timeless Child. If these are the same Remnants of Morai we see here, it would make sense that beings so tied to time would have been able to look into parts of the Doctor's timeline that even she didn't recall. Lastly, if this is where time began, it would make sense if that's why the TARDIS ended up on Desolation in the first place after Twelve's regeneration set it off. Though I am doubtful they'd be connecting it THAT much, those were some things I noticed that got the ball rolling down this thought path of mine.

I loved this episode it was absolutely brilliant. This episode made the Sontarans feel threatening again, which I hadn’t felt since the Sontaran Stratagem/The poisoned Sky. The design of these Sontarans were perfect and they are now my favourite Sontaran design. I appreciated the reference to Classic who mentioning Commander Linx. The battle between the Sontaran and British soldiers was done perfectly, we ultimately new that the Sontarans would use them as target practice. I thought the Portrayal of Commander Skaak was perfect he had the perfect balance of Comedy and menace. My favourite line from him is “I accept your offer. Of a Massacre!”, so beautifully stated by a Sontaran and the shot of him on a horse was fantastic and I liked how they brought back the Sontaran Battle cry Sontar-Ha as I think it suits them perfectly and really sums them up as a species. I loved how skaak says to Jodie “I wanted to ride a horse” and her reaction was brilliant. Overall a fantastically entertaining episode and I rate it a 8/10 which is very good. I only had two problems I didn’t like about the episode, the first being the start and how we don’t really get a proper explanation of how they escaped. The second is I didn’t like how easily the Sontarans were defeated and wished we had more of a focus on them rather than Swarm and Azure (though I’m absolutely loving them as villains so I can’t complain too much). In that first Liverpool scene, I could buy that the Sontarans were better-trained to shoot an enemy army that's charging toward them than a single man running away... if not for that later scene where Dan and Karvanista are standing still in a confined room and the Sontarans still can't hit them.

So the general managed to set up all those explosives and set the fuse whilst also emptying the Sontarans supplies…in under 6 and a half minutes. And also how did the wounded Sontaran survive if he couldn’t refill his suit? He was chained up and couldn’t get back to the ship, Mary had records of his sleeping schedule so he was absolutely there long enough that he needed to refill his tank.

Two of these, one up and one down, mirrored my thoughts exactly. First, the down for the stormtrooper Sontarans, the other for the Japanese food joke. As for the appearance of Swarm, I've constantly reminded of the description of a character in of the of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books, I think So Long and Thanks for All the Fish. “If you took a couple of David Bowies and stuck one of the David Bowies on the top of the other David Bowie, then attached another David Bowie to the end of each of the arms of the upper of the first two David Bowies and wrapped the whole business up in a dirty beach robe you would then have something which didn't exactly look like John Watson, but which those who knew him would find hauntingly familiar." That is what I think every time I see Swarm. I miss Douglas Adams....and Terry Pratchett.

This episode was ok. Just ok. Although for a Chibnal era episode, “ok” is very high praise. I just hope we get some great pay offs with all of these crazy plot lines going on at the minute. I also hope they find a way to get rid of that timeless child shit. It pissed over the Doctor Who legacy… 🤦♂️

I don't think they ever showed throughout the entire series, the Tardis closed itself off from anyone entering.

Watching the TARDIS in this episode (and the first to a bit of a lesser degree) with the understanding that it knows it's being infected and trying to keep warning the Doctor and keeping her out while it's basically dying is really chilling and compelling.
@hydraken44362 жыл бұрын
It has in the past. When the 11th Doctor regenerated and came back 12 years later, the TARDIS locked him out because it would've been dangerous for The Doctor to reenter, and since the TARDIS was in a lot of pain and could possibly put her pilot at risk, it stopped her from entering this time

Okay, I don't know why, but something is telling me that Yaz and Vinder will end up turning into Swarm and Azure by the end of the series. I think this is my favourite episode from Jodie so far. It was the first episode where I actually felt like I was watching Doctor Who, without loads of stupid political messages and cringy acting. It was fun, exciting, action-packed, and the ending was a surprise. I think the weird house at the start is the Village of Angels and it will be the location of that episode

@marcdigiambattista7512 жыл бұрын
There was quite a bit of political messaging, about the horror of war, arrogance of British military officers of the era (reminding me of real life stories from Crimea, later Gallipoli and the France in WWI) and gender roles in early modern medicine. It was just so well done, mostly show rather than tell, that you didn't notice it and it didn't feel forced. This is how science fiction should do politics, by showing a situation in context and letting you think about it without telling you how to think.
@aaron2k0262 жыл бұрын
@@marcdigiambattista751 ok yeah fair enough😅 but they do it much better here like you said, but hinting at it rather than rubbing it in our faces or giving us a trump based character
@marcdigiambattista7512 жыл бұрын
@@aaron2k026 The Trump character was terribly cheesy and on the nose, and I don't even like Trump. If you want to critique a real life politician in a science fiction context, I think it is much better to create a story around their ideas and show the flaws in their ideas rather than creating a cardboard cut out character and throwing shtick at them. That's how you make people think about and question their beliefs.

Clearly making clones soldiers is not a good idea. Imperial Stormtroopers: Clones. Sontarans: Clones. Both terrible shots when not on a crowded battlefield and at close range to their targets.

Yes although I loved this episode the part when in a very confined alleyway the sontarans can't shoot an easy target. The Doctor with a slingshot can hit can hit the probic vent of a sontaran metres away, but 3 or 4 sontarans, as said, couldn't hit the side of a barn. I also always thought the probic vent had to be actually struck within its structure so now a wok/frying pan does the job just by bashing the outside of the probic vent.? The other silly bit (7:46 in this video) was when the Sontaran Commander stands metres away from the Doctor on the battle ground and instead of shooting their ultimate villain decides to have a chat with her. They exchange banter from probably a minute or more and he doesn't think to shoot her????? I would have given an up though for the sontaran new design which is a huge improvement in design. They have got their menace back. This episode had a vital ingredient that has been missing for ages in Chibnall's era. It had fun. Fun! Yay!
