I had such a sensitive hearing when I was a kid. Although music has always been my life, I could never go to concerts, it took me 8 years to get used to loud sound. I am now feeling like I am not really that able to hear the very very very high frequencies. Like, 21 000 hz, which I used to hear at 14 years old. I am now almost 19 and I now cannot anymore. I am starting to panick. It would be a heavenly blessing to find a cure to this. May God help all the scientists who are working on this! And oh, for the love of God, STOP listening music with headphones for over 2 hours straight and with loud volume, no matter how good that song is, especially as a teen!

I AM ALL IN! I would like to devout my life on helping scientists find a cure for hearing loss. I am young adult struggling with mild to moderate hearing loss. I am living in a loud city where it is hard to connect with people my age. With having to wear earplugs everywhere to protect my ears is very stressful and embarrassing. I feel like my life is wasting away because a lot of people my age are going out to loud places. It is 2024 and it is time for scientists to recognize that the world is only going to get louder and louder. People with hearing loss are being left behind and hearing aids not that advancement where it can feel like a having a new set of ears.

Thank you for not saying that the solution is probably about "10 years" off because everyone has been saying "10 years" for the past 20 years and I'm tired of hearing "just 10 more years." That said, I've got no doubt that the advent of AI will help to accelerate progress exponentially, as it should for most medical breakthroughs. So who knows...maybe "10 more years" may now be a realistic ballpark...though personally, I'm hoping for five.

I could never fully hear and always thought that how it was for all. When I joined the military at 18 I learned I had hearing loss. Almost discharged me for it. It's been over a decade since being told and my condition has worsened along with my quality of life. It's frustrating saying what 10 times to finally hear everything. It's impossible to go to loud or crowded places. All the noise overloads my brain and I get angry. Saw a hearing doc couple years ago, they seemed to think it's genetic. So if this actually works sign me up, I've tried several hearing aids to no avail. I'm still "young" and knowing one day I'll wake up and not hear anything haunts me day to day.

I loved this video, even though it does not give me a lot of hope for a stem cell cure any time soon. At least it describes how difficult this type of therapy currently is and why! It seems the other two approaches may have results sooner. Doc, I don't know if you have an answer for this: if your audiograms show a slight decrease in levels, however your speech discrimination is going down significantly, does that indicate a problem with your inner hair cells vs your outer? is this discernable? Also if a virus or autoimmune condition is affecting your hearing , is it likely some frequencies are affected more than others? or is it a generalized deficit? if this question is too technical/medical is there another area/site I can inquire about this? Thanks for all you do!
@davidr1620Ай бұрын
If you have hearing loss or tinnitus, call to get an appointment right now to get a hearing aid! It won’t restore hearing completely or get rid of tinnitus completely, but it helps significantly with both. My tinnitus symptoms went down tremendously and most of the time I don’t even notice it. My Hearing isn’t what it was, but it’s probably a good 40% improvement. And they are pretty affordable now and will be well worth your money. You don’t have to get a super duper high end ones, but spend at least $1500 on a set (or $750 on a single one if you have one bad ear like me). Costco has great ones.

Having stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night, I feel we are likely 7-10 years away from this being a reality, but it will happen. Five would be a best case scenario but possible. This video also seems to suggest re-generative medicines might be an easier approach than stem cells. Not to say that doesn’t have huge challenges too. Hear(pun) is the silver lining. I feel hearing aid tech will exponentially improve in the next 5 if not 3 years where I feel that hearing aid “hearing” will be super close to real hearing. That is my prediction. Peace out. Need to check out.

I have also been treated in the past for BPPV and i have had tinnitus since 1982. The tinnitus is not always bothersome even though it is present 24/7. Even the possible risk of vertigo would definitely be the dealbreaker.

In fact, with today's technology controlling the cells inside the cochlea so that they grow correctly, perhaps nanorobots in the future will be able to help with this. We need billions in a set of new research and technologies to try to achieve something in the future.
@trs86963 ай бұрын
There are also uncertainties about degraded neural functioning downstream from the cochlea. At any rate, this technology was "at least a decade away" twenty years ago. Today it still seems to be "at least a decade away." It's something to be hopeful for, but it should in no way deter people from treating their hearing loss today, with today's technologies.
