Just bought these for my mom. So far so good. Took a bit of doing to connect with Bluetooth - there is a 3 min window from closing the battery doors to connecting. She says the sound is good.

Dr.Cliff, thank you for your review. I was a Bose Hearphone user for over five years and bought the Bose SoundControl hearing aids the day after they were available. I have worn them every day for several months and think they are great! Lack of Bluetooth is disappointing but not a deal breaker for me. Hearing everyday sounds - voices, nature, etc. was always my number one priority. I always have my Hearphones or other Bluetooth headphones for music, podcasts, etc. Finally, I have been professionally diagnosed with mild to moderate hearing loss, but never liked the devices suggested. The Bose Sound Control's do it for me. I could pay more but why? Thanks again, keep up the good work and let's look for an expect more new exciting advances.

I got my hearing aid from Kaiser in 2016. I wore it for a very short time and gave up. I didn't like the way I had to put it into my ear, since I was not good with my fingers. Last week a friend showed me his Bose hearphones. I loved it. I bought one from eBay. After wearing it for a while, I was bothered by the size itself, in addition to its high sensitivity. I was hearing too much "noise" too clearly. Boosting the base made it better. I considered the hearphone a very good investment. As always, I enjoyed watching your videos.

My Bose hearing aids arrived yesterday and I tried them out for about 2 hrs. and then boxed them up, got a return label from Bose , and shipped them back. I was hoping they'd be similar to the Hearphones in sound quality, but not. They seem to be pretty much typical hearing aids made for speech comprehension. I had a conversation with them and they do OK for that, but I've tried better. The big deal breaker for me is sound quality for music. These are loaded with sound artifacts. When I listen to classical and when I play my own instruments (Jazz and Classical). My first test of a new hearing aid is to play the open top E (E below 440 A, about 330 Hz)string on my guitar and if it sounds clean, there's hope. It did not sound clean. It sounded like the aid was trying to sing along in a weird, warbly electronic voice. Other music was hopeless, too. Like the music between news segments on a newscast. I tried different volume and tone settings and different ear tips. They also seem to be very feedbacky, the included closed dome doesn't seem to occlude very much. They don't seem to have a music mode as Dr. Cliff described in a reply to another comment of mine and I'm waiting to see if he responds to my comment about that. Bose didn't argue or tell me to try anything beyond what I already tried (volume, tone, and eartips) when I described my issue and pleasantly sent me a return label and said they would note my comments for future development. Bose is known for their reproduction of music, right? It's too bad they don't work for me. I like the hardware and they were very comfortable. For convenience I include here my description from below of the "modes" in these hearing aids and also the Hearphones (waiting for Dr. Cliff to respond). "I don't understand your description of the "Music" mode. The manual for the hearing aids says that the modes are not set up and the user must make settings as appropriate. All 4 modes are initially set to volume of 10 and tone 0, so not much amplification. This is also true for the hearphones. I don't think there's any real difference in the predefined modes and they're just convenient placeholders to be configured. Is this true? Or is there really different processing for each mode going on behind the scenes?"

Great Review and exactly what I was looking for. "How do they sound?" I'm a musician as well and my Widex Moments are too digital, compressed sounding. If I was running sound for a band and they sounded like this, I'd turn down the gain, turn up the channel volume and decrease the compression. We need a good analog Hearing aid.

I'm 62 and have worn very expensive hearing aids since my early 40s. I received the Bose as a gift and can say that they are by far the best hearing aids I have ever had. I used to say that my hearing aids just made my hearing loss louder. With my Bose I actually hear better. All the bells and whistles that come from expensive hearing aids are just that, bells and whistles. Bluetooth? Meh. My expensive hearing aids, which connected via Bluetooth to my iPhone, had the worst, barely understandable "sound" when I took calls from my phone. I'll take Bose any day.

@@californiahikebike Hey there. That's an interesting question. I workout with them and they're fine in the gym. They come with a "short" wire, but you can also get (at no cost) a longer wire that will set them further into your ear canal. If hiking and biking are what you intend to use them for, I'd think you'd be ok. If you did something where you were shaking your head a lot, I just can't say. I think they've got a pretty liberal return policy; you might just wanna try 'em.

Dr. CLIFF.....I.. you soo much for this review. I am a recent hearing loss candidate myself. Very irritating tinnitus and nearly 80%+ deaf in right ear. I went in to a hearing lab locally in Oak Brook, IL and they gave me a hearing test for free and threw a top of the line Starkey in my ear, and poof, just like that, ringing in right ear ceased and I literally started crying because of the level at what i was capable of hearing. Then the $$$$. I tucked tail and ran when I heard nearly $8k. My wife allowed me to Gove the Bose hearing aid a shot and am cautiously optimistic they'll work well enough to function appropriately.

The comment below by "Glenn Harmelin" regarding wanting a comparison to the Bose Hearphone devices actually came from me. "A few years ago, though I had Oticon OPN1 hearing aids, I picked up the Bose Hearphones for the warmer sound quality afforded by their larger diaphragms. The Oticons were comparably harsh, making me feel like my ears (and brain) were being "sliced and diced." I'm curious as to whether the sound control devices have a sound replication pattern more like my Oticons than the Hearphones. (BTW, I have two sets of the hearphones just in case no one ever makes a larger diaphragm again. They save me from hearing fatigue!)".

thank you so much for all your info. it really helps a lot. I had a conversation once to a higher up in the branding department at beats audio. I asked why they didn’t make hearing aid. i said it was such a huge market and why not be in it. his reply was and he had a name for the reason but i can’t remember what he called it. but it was basically because it’s not cool. he explained that they spend a lot of money on being a “cool brand”and to “tarnish” it with something like a hearing aid would hurt their brand name. SERIOUSLY WTF. i told him he was a tool and paying to be cool is never cool. what a a hole. also do they not get that most “super cool” famous musicians probably suffer from some kind of hearing loss due to loud amplification . it just such a shame these idiots don’t see that. thank you again.

Thank you for your honest straight forward review. Personally my expectations are not high. I have been extremely disappointed in all hearing aids. While they can be helpful for speech intelligibility none are close to what I want regardless of price. At a minimum I need 1/3 octave EQ bands and 4 parametric bands with adjustable Q. I also do not like the pre-set compression algorithms . Would prefer the ability to adjust threshold, ratio, attack and release times. Latency is also an issue on some models. Hoping some day to have all these parameters available to those who under them. Am always amazed how far behind in technology the hearing aid industry is compared to the technology that is available in the recording and sound reinforcement industries. Even the common bar band has more tools available

A big Bose fan and a big Doctor Cliff fan and subscriber! I see they've done a deep discount ($150.00) on their units. I'm hoping it's an early alert that they're dumping inventory with the plan for the next gen hearing aid- with Bluetooth (streaming and calls!) like the competition. I keep calling them peppering them with the fact that I'm a holdout, awaiting them getting on board. You have any news on this hoped-for possibility?
@DrCliffAuD
@DrCliffAuD 2 жыл бұрын
They are dumping inventory because they are getting out of the hearing aid space. From what I've heard, sales have been okay, but 60+% of people who purchase are not actual candidates for their tech and they have nothing else to sell them. Ultimately, their devices are WAY TOO LOW COST to turn a profit in the space. Bad news for other OTC/DTC companies who think that a low cost model will be profitable in the hearing care space.

Please, I don't intend to be rude by asking, but the product title "Sound control" made me think of myself, I have hyperacusis in both ears. In short if you've never heard of this, no pun intended, I hear really well, and am often bothered by it. I usually wear headphones to dampen "sharp" sounds like: Glass tinking, keys jingling, doors slamming, these types of sounds can cause me a sensation of pain without physical injury actually present. I understand this product probably isn't meant for me but!: Does anything exist that would allow me to turn incoming sound up or down depending on what I need to listen to, or am I better off "self-medicating" in a sense by wearing a loose fitting headset 99% of the time I'm awake? This video just now made me consider the possibility there might be help out there for me, I thought once my audiologist told me what I was experiencing after several tests of awesome hearing, that I just needed to internally adjust myself to responding to the stimuli, however, in the past 4 months or so of trying since I saw them last, changing my reaction is much more difficult than I would have initially thought. Thank you for posting this review, I realize I'm entirely off-base from the video at hand but does anyone here have any insight?

Would the Bose hearing aids do well in reducing the volume of sudden nearby very loud sounds -- like a fire engine, for example -- in order to protect hearing?

Can you review live music hearsafe earplugs

Dear Dr. Cliff, A few years ago I had a phone conference with you and you recommended the Hearphones for my music interests which I bought and love but had fear when they were discontinued. I'm more interested in hearing music, both live (my own playing) and recorded (from my sound system), than speech comprehension which seems to improve with correction anyway. The Hearphones do quite well. Are these hearing aids similar in sound quality and processing? I hate artifacts in music. From what this video says about support, there is no chance of actually tweaking things like feedback control, noise reduction, compression, etc. correct? You posted this just in time. My other tab was open to the Bose purchase page and I thought I'd check to see if you had a review yet!

Hey John, when I reviewed their hearing aids, the "Music" mode is essentially a Mute mode. It removes all amplification of the Hearing Aids. I'm guessing that was done for a reason. There is no feedback control, noise reduction, or compression adjustments that you can make. Compression seems to be adjustable through the World volume but you can't adjust compression settings independently.
@jweber53
@jweber53 3 жыл бұрын
@@DrCliffAuD I don't understand your description of the "Music" mode. Or is there really different processing for each mode going on behind the scenes? It seems that these (and hearphones) are kind of like reading glasses in that if they work, fine, otherwise keep looking for another solution. Anyway, I ordered some and I'm hoping they're enough like the hearphones that I'll like them. 90 day return policy.

I have been disappointed by my Bose SoundControls and after 3 months of experimentation have returned them. They are just not powerful enough for my severity of hearing loss.Their failure was a particular disappointment since I purchased them after experiencing several years of satisfaction with Bose Hearphones, which work for me to this day. I mention that both out of my respect for Bose technology and because the sole clinical evidence for FDA approval of SoundControls were studies with Hearphones, NOT SoundControls. The Hearphones remain a much more powerful device. It's a pity that their program control by the Hear App has been disabled. The manual microswitch provides a substitute (except for Treble) but is no match for the App.

Thanks but stopped watching when you said there's no support for bluetooth steaming. Personally, bluetooth isn't just a "nice to have" gimmick but is essential. With non bluetooth aids I have to remove my aid to answer the phone otherwise it will amplify the surrounding sounds even if mitigated to some extent through the use of a programme. I think I will stick with my Phonak Marvel.

Great review as always Dr Cliff! I would like to point out that nothing replaces service you get from a good audiologist or hearing aid dispenser. Having someone that can help you though the hurdle of accepting a hearing loss is worth the extra cost. I understand this may get folks who are maybe in on the fence a push start, I would recommend to take that 850 and get something that you will be more happy with in the long run.
