How to terminate hornets and wasps - part 2

Mop up after nest eradication, shown in my previous video "how to terminate hornets and wasps - part 1". This mop up method is not advisable if you are allergic to hornet stings! At this point the survivors clearly recognize me as a threat and attack me when I get too close. After about 20 minutes of doing this I finally get stung. The nest isn't rebuilt.

Thanks. I only got stung once on the arm, after about 10 to 15 minutes of mop up. It swelled up pretty quick even with ice, antihistamines, etc. so I packed it in.

I've found that strong cleaning sprays work really well with paper wasps nests, better than insect sprays, as they coat the wasps bodies and wings, making them unable to fly and killing them fairly quickly. If you wait until they are all in the nest for the night before spraying them you get all the adults as well as the brood in one go. If you can have something to catch them as they fall down, so much the better to control the process. Be prepared to squirt a lot quickly to do a thourough job. For the ground-nesting wasps, again wait until after dark when they are all inside the nest and pour some petrol into the nest, then quickly block the entrance with soft soil to prevent them coming out of the nest. The funes of the petrol, being heavier than air, will stay in the nest and deprive them of oxygen quickly killing the entire nest. Good preparation and speedy execution makes these very safe procedures.

To get rid of any kind of bees/wasps place a canister vacuum without the hose attached near the hive (drag it under by the cord to prevent getting near the hive), plug it in to turn it on and give it time to warm up so the bees will mistake the infrared heat as an animal and as they try to attack the vacuum they will all end up flying inside, getting trapped, and eventually dying (put tape over the hose hole before unplugging the vacuum). The nest can be knocked apart using a long pole like the kind used to hold pool-cleaning nets, and the bees will attack the vacuum only, unless you get too close. It’s best to do this shortly before sundown as all the bees return for the night at dusk.

Of course he got stung. It was just a matter of time. All he had to do was set up a shop vac on a long pole and move it up to the area of the previous nest. Then the wasps would be sucked into a soapy water solution that would drown them immediately. Of course during the set-up he could be stung, but you do that ahead of time and "move" the set up to the nest area. There are lots of examples of this on line. It is relatively safe since you are not really around when the shop vacuum does its "work." Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)
