How "NOT" to deal with a in-ground Wasp/Hornet nest

I forgot to upload this video from last summer, or maybe..... I just wanted to forget about the whole "how-to video" incident entirely. I intended to film this as DIY environmentally responsible way of ridding our yard of Wasps by using simple dish soap and water. I did not expect to get stung 4 times. I did find out the hard way Wasps can sting you over and over again, They have multiple stinging capabilities, not just a one time shot. Ow.

We had one under the concrete step to the front porch when I was a kid.. My old man waited until dusk then grabbed the funnel and the gas can. He filled it up. Left the metal funnel in the hole. Made my bro and I wait on the other side of the street. He grabbed the fire extinguisher, yelled "FIRE IN THE HOLE", dropped a match and took off. The flames vented through the funnel. He let it burn a little then put it out. He emptied the whole extinguisher down the funnel. We didn't so much as see another wasp all summer. He looked at us and said, "Don't tell your mother."😆 Good times 👍!

An older gentleman from Georgia told me to invert a glass bowl on top of the hole (at night) and pile dirt around the sides of the bowl. The wasps can't get out and the workers can't bring food or water so they leave while the ones in the hole die. I had 2 side by side and within the week they were both gone!

Glad to see you realized to spray at night. Not only are there no wasps flying around to sting you but at night they are all at home so you get them all , no need to keep going back to finish them off. It’s nice to use a “natural “ solution but our best, no fail method is to empty a whole can of Raid or Hot Shot wasp and hornet spray into the hole. We bought a bee suit a few years ago, they are cheap online and do wonders for your self confidence!😁

I had about 5 of these underground nests around my property a few summers ago. I had purchased a bee suit to deal with them and got to say it worked great. Sprayed the hole with wasp killer wait a few then dug it up most were dead sprayed the stragglers. Didn't get stung once with that full suit on. Make sure it's tight around the waist and ankles where they can possibly climb through to sting you. And also wear pants and a long sleeve WITH the suit on, it was like 90 degrees and sweated like hell but better then being attacked lol.

A girlfriend of mine had a big yellow jacket nest in her backyard that she found out about the hard way mowing the grass. I came over early next morning before daylight and emptied an entire can of starting fluid down the hole, next I dumped a gallon of diesel fuel in a 4ft circle on and around the hole and used charcoal lighter to make a trail away to safer ground and lit it. The ground heaving up was impressive and the fireball from the diesel made sure there was no survivors coming out an undiscovered exit. Been 6 yrs since. Never seen another yellow jacket since.

Glad you are okay. Dang know the pain. After it's best to torch ( easy) or dig out area ( replace with fresh dirt). As all nest they leave a homing scent on / in the area of the nest. Even ones in barns. Baking soda / vinegar with concrete dawn slabbed on and soak rinse works well. They get dehydrated from the stuff too.

I'll tell you how NOT to deal with an in-ground wasp nest. When we were kids living in Oregon, my oldest brother Mike (about age twelve or thirteen at the time) was clearing a pathway through the ivy by dragging a length of chain through it. Unbeknownst to us, yellow jackets had built a nest in the ivy right where Mike was going to clear the path. My other brother Daniel and I were walking ahead of him right across the nest getting the wasps riled up. Mike came tromping by with the chain a few seconds later just in time for a bunch of wasps to fly right up his pants. Daniel & I each got stung a few times but Mike had to take off his pants to get all the yellow jackets off of him, so he got stung a bunch of times, including once near his eye.

This actually works if you do it at night. They have to do back in the ground because their bodies don't function normally at night due to lower temperatures. So you do it at night when you know they're all inside, use a piece of screen so none try to escape, pour the soap through the screen, and flood it for about 3 minutes. I've done this numerous times with a 100% success rate.

Yes I just had this issue with yellow jackets last week!! I used 2 prong attack. 1st I quickly poured couple gallons of ammonia down the entrance hole. While having my gallon sprayer with ammonia ready to go. I sprayed all the yellow jackets that I didn't get with my 1st attack. Not 1 time stung. And it was all over in 30 minutes. That included digging up the 3 tier nest they built.

Doing a plumbing job, I smashed the nest with a pick thinking it was just a white rock... seem like tracer bullets attacking me by the thousands. Each wasp stings like a jack hammer a 100 times a minute. I made it into the house with who knows how many chasing me, and while talking to a fellow worker there withing a few minutes... I passed out. They rang emergency and were told to monitor me for 5 minutes to see if I regain consciousness... which I did. I suffered crazy pain and itching for 2 months after and lumps as big as golf balls. They are like devils if you disturb them. Next to kidney stones, this was my worst experience.

That sting really does give that adrenaline rush though. I have been waked by them a few times in destroying their nests. Stuff I use is surface spray insecticide. Not in the pressure can, but liquid in a bottle. Just tip a cup of the stuff down the nest at night come morning you got a body count as a pile. Word of advice never use gasoline and especially LPG followed by a lighted match unless you want a deep fish pond in your yard.
@mrcryptozoic817

Why not use gas? It's heavier than air, robs the hole of oxygen, gets in the nest and suffocates the pupae. It's not cheap anymore, but it's sure effective. Don't light it; you want the fumes.

I had one of these near a blueberry bush years ago. I got stung one day which was pretty painful for a couple days. The hole got a bit bigger as the weeks went by until one day I could see something got into the hole and made it 10 times bigger overnight. There were also a couple honeycombs laying on the ground by the hole. Not sure what it was that destroyed them but we do not have bears in Northern Indiana.

I had a yellow jackets nest in the ground like this one yesterday. Our dad taught us a long time ago to take a quarter to half full pea can of gasoline and dump it down the hole late in the evening. Don't light it as the fumes will kill them. Went outside the next morning and none were around. I've never had that trick fail for in ground yellow jackets and it causes little damage to the yard.

Given the lack of lawn care skills, I would recommend either painting the ground green like they do in AZ, a dry theme using succulents like cacti or artificial turf. Any of those options would work better than the dead, burnt lawn theme. Maybe the yellowjackets would not find it so attractive neither.🤔

I've learned to use Simple Green to handle every type of insect. Not completely sure , but I think it penetrates their exoskeleton because they die in about 10 seconds. Today I went to the my small garden to install another fence so the deer don’t hop the short fence and eat my plants. To my shock, I was stung 2 times by freaking wasps. I read on the Net how to deal with the situation. Beer advice was to wait and take care of business at night. I went back around 9 pm with a flash light and bucket of insecticide, sprayed the crap out of the underground nest. It killed then as they came out the ground. Not sure if they will all die as I flooded their nest with insecticide.

We had a wasps nest burrowed into one of our fruit tree root bases , the way I dealt with it was I poured about a litre of unleaded into a milk bottle that had a nice taper too it so it fitted snugly into the hole , I carefully moved to hole and pushed the bottle upside down into the hole firmly , I did it at night when the wasps where not active. By morning , all the wasps were dead from the unleaded fumes, and they have never returned.

Had jellow jackets in a hole in the ground along the back foundation of my house - found it out when I got stung. I bought a squeeze bottle of Tempo 1% dust on Amazon. I attached a small scoop (maybe 1/3 of a cup size) to the end of a pole and put a bunch of Tempo dust in it. After dark I used a flashlight to make sure I went to the right spot and from a safe distance I dumped the dust down the hole. Never saw another yellow jacket. They didn't even make it out of the hole to die.

I think the mistake you made wasn't that it was at night. It was that you didn't put even NEARLY enough water down the hole. You need to keep filling with water until the ground around it saturates, so that it can _hold_ the water for longer than a few seconds, and at that point, keep filling the nest with water, otherwise they won't drown; also, if the hole has varying levels of cavities the water might not fill the entire nest, which is another reason why you must poor endless amounts of water (literally minutes, not just a minute and a half), because if there are different levels, water might collect there and not fill properly. Once the surrounding ground is saturated with water, it will start filling up. So I would say, at least, 5 minutes at the bare minimum. But probably 10 minutes to be sure. Using soap is entirely unnecessary and, since you will be flooding it for so long, it will just be flushed away, basically. I have done this method many, many times, granted, where I live, dumping a cubic meter of water or two is basically dirt cheap.

ALWAYS DEAL WITH WASPS AT NIGHT. When's the last time you saw wasps flying around at night? You didn't because that's when they all go home to sleep. So not only do you get them while theyre sleeping but theyre also all at home, not with some flying around getting pissed when they can't get back home and coming for you. Wait til about 10 pm (so it has cooled down a bit) and stick a whole fogger in the hole, plugging the entrace but make sure the fog is going into the nest and you didn't just stick it into the dirt.

Netting would work well too, like a screen material used for windows. Just need something to hold the corners down.

Many mistakes here..... - Wierdly painted toe nails - Parched lawn should not be mowed - Was going to mow the lawn wearing flip flops - Having Palmolive soap in the house

The type of dude who has his toes painted is the same type of dude who goes to the hospital for a few wasp stings, coincidentally it's also the same type of dude who stops the flow of water

My son found a hornet nest with the mower a few years back. They ate him up and 6 hours later were still attacking the shirt he threw off while running from them. I waited till well after dark, sprayed wasp killer down the hole, then put a bowl over it. Next day there were 100s of dead hornets under the bowl and when we dug up the nest we found 100s more dead inside it. The nest was roughly the size of a cantaloupe when we dug it up.
