Good idea options besides eye drops. There doesn't seem to be much evidence that fish oil pills work but Fish oil does (I still take the fish oil capsules and don't eat enough fish). Take Multivitamin with vit A. Other things to help: 1 olive leaf extract taken orally (anti-inflammatory) Study shows just as beneficial as Omega 3 supplements, not that most studies support Fish Oil (but it could be big Fish Companies want you to buy more. I say why trust anyone?) 2 Probiotics. Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus acidophilus are common and easy to get and shown to help Sjögren’s syndrome which always includes very dry eyes and mouth as 3 Pumpkin Seed oil taken orally is shown to be helpful in one study 4 Bromelain along with quercetin and vitamin c. No big study. 5. Choline and apple cider vinegar . This make acetylcholine which is proven to help dry eyes. Studies show acetylcholine helps dry eyes. Choline is in many foods but I take a supplement and then mix a little apple cider vinegar in with some juice. Try to reduce sugary drinks as sugar is not good for anything. 6 non-synthetic vit B12. A study shows this but probably doesn't help much. 7. Astragalus .. proven to work with rabbits and it boost white blood count and immune system. No human studies. 8. Glutathione. The mother of all Antioxidants No study I know of but this free-radical scavenger helps cataracts and is good for eyes and entire body. 9. blueberries .. finally a food to eat besides fish. Studies show it may help. Like other fruits it has anthocyanin that provides eye protection and may even improve your vision. 10. NAC . I take the tablet but is used in eye drops. Shown to help Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) which is responsible for most dry eye. - I did use stinging nettle but I think that could dry your eyes out. 11. Exercise Your Eyes daily. I do convergence exercises but look them up on Google. Also: Virgin coconut oil helps to leave on or rub eye gentle with or do MGD massage with but don't let it get into eye but just leave it on but if a little drips that's fine no need for concern. Probably better than most eye wipes which you could be bad for inner eye if they permeate it. Though once in a while or more often for an an eye scrub is fine. One can do short or long MGD exercises but be very careful. A study supported virgin coconut oil for helping dry eyes (not sure if this was in drop form) and not damaging eyes at all. I did use stinging nettle but I think that could dry your eyes out Why do follow up studies to reduce intake of unnecessary or harmful supplements and hurt Big Pharma profits? Other avenues: Punctual Plugs Lipiflow

I'll save you the trouble: 1) Artificial Tears 1:48 2) Omega-3 4:58 3) Anti-inflammatory eye drops like Restasis (3+ month course) 7:39 4) New In-office treatments like Lipiflow or plugs (though plugs could add to the problem too) 11:38 5) hot compresses 18:29 6) Autologous Serum 19:37 7) Scleral contact lenses 21:27 If anyone was wondering what works for me: I have dry eye plugs which work pretty well. They help. I had them put in on May 15, 2019 and as of this edit (June 12, 2020) they still work. Systane Ultra helps a lot for me and I use it every morning. The other systane types do nothing for me. Systane ultra actually for some reason are the only drops that relieve my symptoms. That includes all other brands and types. I find blinking hard or squeezing fairly hard when I blink helps too, maybe because it releases some oily tears when I do it. Anyway, I know this is anecdotal, but it's what I've found helps me. Don't give up hope. You're going to have to try a bunch of different things, and hopefully over time you'll find the right way to manage this. It probably took me over a year to find the management protocol that works for me. A doctor or doctors can certainly help in this journey, but a lot of it is trial and error. PS- I also take a maqui berry supplement in the morning. Google the studies on that if you haven't already. No clue if it does anything, but I take it anyway, along with omega-3, vitamin D, etc (and I eat the keto diet). Remember: Dry eye is an inflammatory condition. This is why treatments often focus on reducing that inflammation. It is destroying your tear glands. This is why I stopped eating crap and why doctors prescribe stuff like restasis and what not.

For what it is worth, this is what got my MGD under control: -Celluvisc preservative-free gel drops during the day (they are extremely thick...thinner drops from every brand do nothing for me. These do blur vision for a few minutes after application but they last a long time.) -Nighttime ointment with white petroleum + mineral oil, preservative free (several brands make this sort of product, but I always avoid preservatives, which some products have) -Bruder heat mask in the morning + evening for 10 minutes followed by an eyelid scrub and gland massage (this is critical as it keeps glands from dying) -Omega 3 DHA/EPA supplementation (evidence on the benefits here are a little mixed but I figure it can't hurt) -GLA omega 6 supplementation (some evidence suggests this may have more promise than omega 3 in improving tear film stability) -HEPA filters in the rooms I spend most of my time in to bring allergens and PM2.5 levels down to next to nothing to reduce inflammation caused by microscopic particles -Increased humidity to 55% with distilled water (tap water contains minerals that a humidifier will put into the air and this will harm air quality) -Taking a break every 20 minutes from looking at a computer/phone screen to look at something 20 feet away and then purposefully blink hard for 20 seconds to work those glands (this is called the 20-20-20 rule) -Switched to daily disposable contacts (they breathe better) and reduced my contact use to less than 6 hours a day This got everything under control in about a month. It eventually led to me stopping my use of contacts and then I got SMILE corrective surgery. Different things seem to work better for different people, so I can't say if any of this will help others, but it did work for me.

We use a drop of castor oil or moringa seed oil or coconut oil or even ghee in the eyes in India for dry eyes before going to bed. One more thing I like to mention which is not easily available is human breast milk for eye injuries. Any time one of us had an eye injury my grandmother used to ask us to get couple of drops of breast milk from the neighborhood nursing mothers and she used to put a drop or two couple of times and our eyes were healed.

Checkin in Doc from Western NC... Blue Ridge Mountains. GOOD GRIEF I've had dry eyes for 15 +years, 2 eye injuries, dog stuck her nose in my eye and later stuck the point of mother-in-law tongue plant in same eye. Eye Doc said he could see the imprint of the dog's nose on my eye. Cataracts removed from both eyes, 10 years apart. Now on eye drops to prevent glaucoma. Appreciate your detailed information. Had my eye doc explained all of this I would not have stopped my drops for dry eyes. I was told to use the ointment at night but another doc said it wasn't necessary. Since your presentation here, I will be doubling down on my drops and ointment. No, have not heard of the things you asked about. I'm from Ohio, lived 4 yrs in St. Paul, Minnesota as a kid. Lost a white boot in the snow and didn't find it til spring when it was floating down the street in the melting snow. Speaking of eyes & eyelids... When I got home that day after searching for my boot without any luck... I had FROST on my eye lashes. I'll never forget having scalloped potatoes for supper. It was quite the warming dish. I plan to listen to all of your videos. You know your business and must be pretty smart to be able to talk soooo fast. lol Only problem is you leave the rest of us behind in the dust. LOL again. Just wish you'd slow down just a bit. I'm in the south now and getting older. Keep up the great work. God bless!

I had Lipiflow about three years ago and it totally relieved dry eye symptoms. It was expensive (about $1,000 for one treatment) but it did the trick. My eye surgeon advised me to put white rice in a sock, tie off the end, and heat it in the microwave, then use that as a hot compress. You have to determine how long--my microwave does this best at 1:12 minutes--be careful not to burn yourself. It's reuseable and the sock can be washed periodically.

Glad you mentioned omega 3 in relation to eye health. I can vouch for the effectiveness, as I noticed when starting to take a teaspoon of cod liver oil each day (for vitamin D) my eye sight improved greatly within a month, including my night vision. I had not considered the vitamin A or omega 3 content which it also contains, as a benefit. That said, my eyes eventually became so sensitive to seeing in the dark, car lights became a problem. That was fixed with a bilberry supplement. I now include a supplement specifically formulated for eye health in my daily vitamin/mineral regime as well as a krill oil supplement.

My doctor suggested buying a humidifier for the home or office. I have not done this yet. But, I notice when there is a lot of humidity in the air my eyes feel better. I live near the beach. Air conditioned rooms are hard on my eyes. I do use artificial tears and compresses which are soothing. Thanks for all the info.

Oops, Dr.Allen I have one more quick ? For you. When applying my cosmetics my eyes start burning (if not already) and tears (big tears since the plugs) run down my face. Worse when applying my eyeshadows. One day their fine, the next they react like this and horrific headaches. Is this common with severe dry eye syndrome? Thank you so much for your in~depth tutorials. You have helped me more than my optometrist. Somethings got to help, it’s really getting to me. Have been seeing optometrist every two weeks for 8 weeks now. See her again after the 1st of Jan.

I just found your videos and watched two already. Thank you! I have many eye issues. My dry eye was probably caused by multiple retina detachments and surgeries. I also have glaucoma in the same eye. The dry eye is making everything so much worse. I am hoping your suggestions will help me

having dry eyes really kills your self esteem, everyday i have to walk out the door knowing i dont have healthy white eyes and will stay like that for most of the day people always think you are a drug addict or sick and strangers treat you very different and arent friendly to you as they would be to somebody whos eyes look normal, even cashiers and staff at stores, ever since i got dry eyes, socially its destroyed my confidence and nobody wants to be around me.......i hope i can get it treated permenantly asap, its ruining my life

@@Restless_Vibes27 i tried fish oil but i think i got a cheap one that doesnt work well. Im gonna try to use cod liver oil because i heard good things about it for dry eyes and im using eye ointment but i have to use it every 2 hours. Im also drinking A LOT of water. Im also going to exercise more from now on. If this doesnt work or make anything better in 2 weeks than im going to ask an eye doctor for help.

I hear ya man but don't give up. "The Dry Eye Show with Drs. Jenna & Travis Zigler" is the best channel for dry eye. They're amazing. Also, look into IPL treatment, which is discussed in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpWykomNrKaMf9E

Hey Nick, I too am considering Lipiflow. You're not the only one it can be frustrating but hey to the very least there are treatments. It's so weird cause this has happened most recently my doctor told me it might be allergies and maybe heard allergy season has been hard this year. So I'll give it another 3-4 months and if it still dry then yeah Lipiflow it is.

I think I had those scleral lenses when I had contacts and that was the beginning of my really dry eyes. Even though I haven't worn contacts for more than a decade, I still have pretty dry eyes. There are several complicating factors though. I live in a very hot and dry place so I almost always have a fan blowing at me. This tends to make my eyes really dry but I just simply can't tolerate the heat without it. Then, I smoke Cannabis, which also makes my eyes dry. Interestingly enough, I have been studying the anti-inflammatory effects of the cannabinoids and I have found them to be far superior to other topical anti-inflammatory treatments when used on skin. It would probably help inflamed eyes too but obviously it would require much more caution when making such a thing for the eye than it does to extract the cannabinoids into a lipid-based lotion for the skin. Anyway, thanks for the ideas!

I have seen a few videos where you included some animations, would you be able to create a video where you show what someone with dry eyes might see, the sort of blurry vision or any other types of visual disturbances someone might see? If you can that would be amazing, but if not, thanks for all the videos and explanations
@DoctorEyeHealth5 жыл бұрын
yeah the animations are not easy haha. very time consuming. But I know of a way I can try to simulate dryness and vision. Maybe I will try to work that into my next dry eye tips video coming soon.

Also I would like to know if IPL (intense pulsed light) applied to the eyelids is the best treatment for MGD.

Hi Dr. Allen! I was diagnosed with dry eyes about a month ago and given steroid drops. A few weeks later I saw a dermatologist for some different looking acne and the doctor asked if I ever felt like something was in my eye. I told her I have blepharitis (rated a 3+). She diagnosed me with rosacea (acne) and said it is connected to dry eye. A week on low dose doxycycline and my eyes are doing so much better. Do you ever diagnose rosacea as the culprit for dry eye? I hope the doxycycline (40mg) and face cream (Soolantra) knock this out. Thanks for your wonderful videos!
