I'm surprised you did not mention ghost lights. My first glasses did not have an AR coating, and at night, bright lights would be reflected back into my eyes from various angles so that I would see many more lights than there actually were. This made night driving very difficult and confusing-especially in unfamiliar areas. AR coated glasses eliminated this completely. For me, this was a safety issue. Cheers, Russ

Loved the video…I feel we’re taken advantage of a lot when buying lenses and especially lens coating “options” when buying glasses from your typical Omnivision etc. businesses. Man they hit me with over 300.00 purely for lens “options” and I’m really relying on your videos to get to the bottom of this….my prescription is very slight and it’s time we educate ourselves on eye lens function,features, prices, and brands also the difference between necessity and pushy sales tactics..we need to know especially because your vision is not only the most important of your 5 senses but the windows to the soul.

My takeaway from this video is that if I buy a camera or telescope it will have anti-reflective coating, but if I buy a pair of glasses I get soaked for more money if I want the coating. By the time you're finished with "add ons" the glasses become unaffordable.

I hate anti-reflective coatings. Sure, they reduce glare, but they not only smudge super easily, but they attract dust and lint, and above all, scratch at the slightest touch. Seriously, I can use a microfiber cloth after wetting the lens with the eyeglass cleaning fluid given to me by the same store I got my glasses, and I will ALWAYS have at LEAST one new scratch by the time I'm done. Normally I get about 2 to 5 scratches each time. Add in the tiny spot-like pock marks that seem to appear, and anti-reflective coating isn't worth all the hassle. I'd rather deal with some glare than have to replace my glasses in six months because they're scratched up so badly I can't even use them.

If you hold the glasses with the lens and temples facing downward. can you see a slight blue/green/purple color reflecting up toward you off the surface of the lens? Or is it just a reflection of any light sources.

For many years my optometrist has been telling me that the new A R coatings are better than the old ones, and sucked me in to trying them again. They are no better. Granted, they are clearer when they are clean, but are impossible to clean. Doesn't matter how you try to clean them, they always look like the dog licked them. Dish soap is the best, but they are never clean. Always streaked. If they ever need cleaning and you are not near any dish soap, you have the terrible experience of spending the day looking through streaked glasses. I don't need that kind of grief, so I now have the regular lenses. Every day I am glad I didn't listen to somebody who makes extra cash selling A R coated glasses.

I was told that the coating does deteriorate though from salt water or from stronger cleaning chemicals withch will leave you with ruined lenses. Great video. I just got AR glasses and since I sit at a computer most of the day, they suggested a "Duravision Blue Protect" lens to block out Blue Light. I am noticing a bit of a yellow hue, especially when outside. Sometimes to the point where I'm lifting my glasses to know the difference in color. In your opinion, do the pro's of Blue protect outweigh the yellowish hue to the lens?
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Kyle! I personally like the blue protect. There are different brands and lenses that have different levels of blue protection, but in general the more blue protection the yellower the lens. If you are not a big fan of the yellow, consider talking to the optical about having them switched out. Transitions lenses with the Preventia coating will give you 30% blue light protection without having the yellow hue I personally have a pair of Kodac total blue lenses that block 80% but have just a slight blue color that I dont find bothersome unless I am painting or doing something that requires correct color perception. Otherwise I find them rather calming.

Most sunglasses do not have anti reflective on the front or back surfaces of the lenses, but higher quality sunlenses have the coating on the back side. Most coatings do not have a specific color for you to choose from, it depends on the company/product you are purchasing as different companies may have their own formula. My favorite right now is the Crizal Saphire 360, which has very little reflection at all. but seems like a faint light blue.

Blue light filtering sounds awful if you work in graphic design, CGI, or you're a gamer. You don't want anything changing the way the image looks unless you purposefully make it that way. Having said that, I could see the use of blue light filtering if you're someone who works with spreadsheets, word processing, or anything less visually-oriented.

You are brilliant - pure delight listening to you. You make everything so clear, (like with AR coating....). I get a feeling of comprehensive understanding of the subject. Thanks for making these videos for us.

Does this depend on the actual AR coating quality itself? I tried specsavers AR back in 2014 and nothing was better it was just green instead

could you suggest glasses with a mild tint specifically for night driving , someone with keratconus i get a lot of glare, halo ,dry eyes especially at night, i dont wear glasses. so if im to buy lenses for night preferably it would be beneficial if i could get a sun glasses/ night driving duo, so something with a mild tint , i have looked at the amber coated lenses but to be honest im not a fan . any suggestions ?

I ordered an expensive pair of glasses with progresive lens. Unfortunately I accepted this Reflective Coating. After 1 year this coating become broken and partially removed from my glases coming with a dirty lens aspect. I tryed to clean this in different ways but it was impossible. I think now the glases become very dangerous for my eyes because I am looking like through dirty window. I will go for a new pair of glases but I will not request this feature again.

So anti-glare and anti reflective is just the same?
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. the industry term is anti - reflective but its often confusing to people so anti- glare or glare free lens are now being used.

Another place this is applied is phone screens, like an iPad! Not all of them have it, but I know the Pro models do Also the cosmetic thing is a big benefit - my current classes don’t have them, and man is it hard to get a good selfie

Hi doc I have a question you may be able to help me with. I have a rare disease and it causes photophobia. I always have trouble finding a pair of prescription sunglasses that really work effectively. What would you recommend someone with super light sensitivity do to help see better in sunlight?
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 5 жыл бұрын
Oh my...thats tough. What type of condition if you dont mind me asking? Albinism? At the VA we would have patients go through a trial set of basically every tint of sunglasses. Some people do really well with purple or darker amber colors (however this may skew color perception). If you can't find a regular sunglasses pair that you like, consider asking an optical that can dye lenses...they can make them as dark as you want!

Sure. I have a very rare disease called Cystinosis. It affects every cell in the body. As far as the eyes go crystals build up in the eyes and unless you use your eye drops, ( Cystaran) they will continue to multiply. The dose is almost impossible to follow unless you got to start them at a young age. About roughly 10 years ago or so you could only get them from the NIH, ( National Institute of Health.) your susposed to put them in each eye every waking hour. I went 32 years with out access and have had a hard time getting on a schedule and am now 40; so you can imagine the build up.of crystals. Luckily they were approved by the FDA and you do not have to go to the NIH anymore to get them. However you could imagine the difficulty with not only sun light, but any bright light.

Watching your videos helped me realize there was more to glasses/sunglasses was there was more to just getting dark glasses and that there were more options available that could work together. I’ve recently found your KZbin channel and have really enjoyed them. Thank you for all the info you have put out there!

I'm currently waiting for my glasses to come in. I'm 50 and its my first time wearing glasses. I've learned a lot from you and I appreciate it. To my surprise ,my eyes were worse than I expected . Astigmatism in both eyes and they strongly suggested progressive lenses. We decided on Varilux X lenses. I see on the receipt that they have "backside AR" . We also did the "Crizal Sapphire HR " , I'm assuming is just on the front of the lens ? My question or questions , does the crizal sapphire also have anti reflection ? What's your thoughts on the overall lenses with the crizal sapphire HR? Thank you.

I went to the eye dr and they talked me into upgrading to premium anti glare coating for an extra $80. I was reluctant because my insurance covered a basic antiglare at 100%. Anyways I just so happened to call my insurance and the office billed me for basic and took my money for the upgrade. I ended up getting my money back and left the glasses there and got my benefits reinstated because I couldn't tell if I had gotten what I paid for. Is there a way to tell basic anti glare coating vs premium anti glare? If so whats the difference?
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 5 жыл бұрын
WOw. Thats a crazy story. Really sorry to hear you had that experience. It makes me angry that a place would try and pull that. Happy you got the money back and the benefits reinstated. It can be pretty difficult to compare sometimes, depending on the brands. BUT I will see if I can make a follow up video on it so I can SHOW you what it looks like. Cheers

In my opinion, no. You can however, sometimes tell by the color whether or not it is a blue light blocking AR. Usually much more Blue/Purple in color. I personally have not worked with everyone brand on the market but between the ones I do, there is no way to tell what level and AR is by looking at it. Of course if its crazing or coming off, its probably a low level, standard coating. (Optician)

Sometimes my anti reflective coating has the bluish tint and sometimes a yellowish tint. What do I need to ask for if I want the bluish tint?
