Thank you, Robert, for detailed videos and teaching us about new technologies in lenses. Since you appear to really educate yourself and share that education with your audience, I am going to send you down the rabbit hole when it comes to light wavelengths. Studies have shown that adding blue light filter to eyeglasses is ineffective and it doesn't really help with fatigue nor sleeplessness. It is the bright light that is the problem , so dimming screens towards bedtime or better yet, putting electronic screen away, is the effective way of dealing with this issue. Blue light exposure at specific strength "Blue lights" or white full spectrum lights, at specific strength, helps with SAD syndrome (fatigue, depression) but glasses blue light filtering coating would be on them all the time and not at only specific time, so in a theory, it would cause fatigue. Now, it only blocks about 15% of blue light, so it is insignificant and not effective enough to use it even in evening, computer glasses. 2nd, almost nobody has designated evening only computer glasses, so even if it would be beneficial, which was proven in recent studies that is not, doctors do not recommend spending money it and having it added to eyeglasses. If anything, many people actually having issues with color visualization when that blue light filter coating is added. Thank you again for all the info that you are sharing. I will check your mirror videos because I am struggling with getting proper lenses for running, hiking and biking and none of the main sport glasses websites list explanation how mirror coatings over RX, especially transition lenses, effects the wearer when you walk inside, or in bright sunlight, or when you are exposed to bright evening light when biking during late evening, dark hours. I am still trying to understand, so I am rewatching your videos. I am currently dealing with Rudy Project RX sport amber transition lenses with silver mirror coating AR and it appears that I am having tons of increased glare. It seems that the problem is the color of mirror if I am understanding your videos correctly.

Lens coatings are great to have but I've been wearing glasses all of my life and came to the conclusion that if you plan on keeping your lenses for a long time you don't want lens coatings because it starts to fade away and making your lenses look foggy and stained But you can remove it with etching cream if you have plastic lenses or Water and alcohol if your lenses are glass.

Just curious some folks claim is wiser don't have coating on lens as in future no need to worry what coating wear off ( which is naturally will wear off in one or two years times due to daily usage ) Next once coating wear off , when see things will have " cloudy glare around ". They claim they rather see " scratch mark " if happen appear than " cloudy glare " this is why they opt out coating. Some folks even claim , coating is actually useless come people work a lot in front computer. They claim , even with out coating on the lens , they can work in front of the computer without getting headache etc ....Whereas some claim , is good to have a coating even on Normal lens. Kinda is up to individuals ??

10:23 interesting to learn that high end sunglasses have AR on the back but not the front. Wonder if Zeiss does the same for heavily tinted prescription lenses?
@thespectaclefactory
@thespectaclefactory Жыл бұрын
It can be done. But it's this way for a reason - sunglasses are designed to block out light, whereas an anti reflection coating is designed to transmit light. Hence, you would usually want it on the front of your glasses but not on the front of your sunglasses. Having said that, our flash coatings selectively reflect a certain colour in order to match the frame to the lens.

Did you ever figure this out? I have a similar issue and need to cover my eyes when indoors. I was looking at the silver mirror, but maybe thinking of the blue light glasses with a bit of a tint, this way you can tell people that you have special blue light glasses to block blue light without looking too odd. Many people will think its just a new tech thing. I was leaning on a mirrored glasses because at least they don't look like you are wearing dark sunglasses.

Nice explanation of coatings. But what bugs me is that I usually take my glasses with me to a shower, and the warm water causes the coating to partially fall off, giving it a dirty/greasy look because of the uneven area with coatings remaining on the glass surface. Yes, we can add any prescription and any tint to (almost) any frame. You're right about the residual colour. You might notice the glasses I'm wearing in this video have a colourless anti-reflective coating - which comes from Leica.

I believe in your first question, you are asking if it will devalue the frame if you replace frame with lenses that don’t say Gucci. I have monovision and mid 50's my reading has gotten to point cheaters arent working for small print(I take photo of labels and zoom in) I live in my readers. I work all day reading on computer and during personal time I prefer my smartphone over laptop. Fed up with it I just got a proper prescription so I can get into office progressives for the computer and closer reading. I figure since I'm in them 70% of my day I want to look good. I love the Cartier panthere, I also love the gradient blue. But in summer months I like to sit outdoors and read and hate giving up sunglasses for readers so am thinking of the lens that turns into sunglasses too. I stumbled across your KZbin videos (which are fantastic btw). Could you recommend which lens I should be asking for? I also am female with hair products and makeup and find my cheaters constantly smudged, so I am wondering if there is a coating to decrease smudging from products since they are for computer and closer only I do remove them to see distance, drive etc.

Should people working with microscope use lens coating, does lens coating affect what color you see under a microscope? I had this experience once where my teacher was not using lens coatings and I had and the color of stained cells on slide was different from what I saw. If different people wear different lens coating, will they argue on what color they are seeing. Especially where color perception is important in workplace like a laboratory. Can wearing tinted glass affect what I see?

@thespectaclefactory Hi, ive just started wearing prescriptions glasses like 1 month ago, after research (mostly your videos cos you kinda have one of those trustworthy faces 😁) I chose zeiss smartlife with duravision silver (platinum is not available in my country😢) however its been a stressful experience, because no matter how careful i am, like only microfiber and zeiss wipes, it still somehow got scratched, its not a big scratch tho, just something that can only be seen if you put flashlight on it. It bothers me somehow, I ended up religiously just using water (sometimes with very basic dish soap, just distilled water with surfactant,nothing else) and air duster so nothing will touch the lens. But this got me curious, is (soft)scratches a normal thing when wearing a glasses?or is duravision silver just not worth the money anti scratch wise? Would love to see your take on this, thanks 😊

Is anti glare and anti reflective coating are the same or not! should I apply anti glare and anti reflective coating in both sides or just in inside part for sunglasses! Is dust and water repellent is a coating or natural attributes of polycarbonate lens! Please reply, it will help me a lot
@thespectaclefactory
@thespectaclefactory 2 жыл бұрын
They are kind of the same. Anti-reflection stops reflections off the lens surface, which in turn reduces glare into the eyes. BUT it's important to know that lenses with anti-reflection do not reduce glare from the outer environment, only reflections that would have been caused by the lenses themselves. Polycarbonate doesn't inherently have dust or water repellence. You need a coating for that. I never recommend polycarbonate lenses - see my video about lens materials.

Watched to know more about the “Flash Coating” and thanks; but, Recommendation for future videos. Eliminate the echo and crispness of your voice caused by all hard surfaces around you. Cushions or at minimum hanging towels out of camera view. Also a 1960’s “78rpm” record static is not something we should hear in 2023.

Great example of marketing overkill, as in people have a life/short retention. History has shown 3-5 product bullets is the mainstream killer.

I had the outmost respect for your opinion till you talked about blue light, which it has been proved to do nothing harmful to the eyes or any of those bad things lens makers are trying to push as fact, more than that it has been proven to switch colour hues and change them so…

@@gerardoarenasss What are we talking about here Blue light or blue filter lenses? From your first comment its clear that you are talking about blue light which is proven to disrupts sleep patterns if absorbed for longer duration that why i said do some research on that. In your reply you are saying to use blue light filter on your phone or laptop which implies that you acknowledge the fact that blue light does put some strain on eyes emitting from screens. Where as in regards of blue blocking lenses there are many different kinds and strengths some blocks fraction of wavelength some block more and some are fake. At the end its up to personal preference some people use filter feature on smartphones and laptops which they find alright and some people find it not working or unpleasant thats why they with refractive errors prefer this feature integrated in their lenses which is more convenient and pleasant.

Blue light still causes eye strain, and phone filters aren't 100% effective

EVERY Lens Coating? I thought you were going to go in-depth discussing various AR coatings. This was just about flashy-looking add-ons. Though you love mirrored lenses, trying to talk to someone who has mirrors instead of eyes is intensely creepy. No thanks, and I wish the trend would die.
