I remember my only hospital visit was after I was so severely constipated as like a 12 year old, that I literally couldn't move. Was bent over in the fetal position until they finally got me to the hospital and "stuff happened". They literally kept me there, in the hospital I was born in, for 3 days, just to make sure I wouldn't relapse into non-pooping. It's honestly astounding, just how much pain your body can put you in, for a) not eating right and b) not drinking enough. So many head- and stomachaches I've had since, could just be resolved by drinking a bit of coffee and chugging water.

I had a tumor obstructing the passage between my stomach and my small intestine. Due to my own fears of being called an “exaggerate”, I didn’t consult a doctor for more than a year. By then I was vomiting several times a day, couldn’t eat anything, not even broths, and was on the brink of a full body shutdown, due to mineral and vitamin losses and lack of proteins even at blood level. My body ate itself, muscles, bones and fat reserves, and it took me almost a year to recover from surgery. I’m lucky to be alive.

I get bad period cramps (and actually have gone to the ER for them once as I have had a few gyn surgeries and was worried something got messed up), but a bowel obstruction is a totally different pain. I've had many of them and you're not gonna confuse that pain with cramps. With a bowel obstruction, I get sharp pains whenever my bowel tries to move, a ton of pressure, and a feeling like things are backing up (and the nausea is also different- I've actually thrown up feces before because my bowel got so messed up they had nowhere else to go. I waited too long and an NG tube would have prevented that particular experience!).

Even if you’re experiencing bad period pain regularly you’ll notice that something is wrong if you’re having stomach pain because of a serious obstruction. I‘m one of the unlucky girls who have very bad period pains and I also already had a small bowel obstruction because of scar tissue and 2 more because my bowel wrapped itself around for some reason. It’s a whole different kind of stomach pain and overall feeling and you’ll notice the difference. Even if both are a 10/10 for you on the pain scale and the main pain is located in the belly area in both cases (it can also spread to the back etc.), it still just feels different. For me period pain is a constant pain and the obstruction pain came in waves as if I was going to born a child (colics) and you have to throw up a lot more, only to name a few noticeable differences besides from the feeling of the pain itself.

My eldest son, aged 49 years, lost his life to this. He had Hydrocephalus as a baby after Meningitis and had many shunts put in. As a result, adhesions twisted his bowel to a point that portions of his bowel dies. From extreme pain on the Friday, he presented at the hospital, was operated on straight away and again another on Saturday morning, he was placed on life support. We had to make a decision on Sunday. I am so happy that this fellow had a positive outcome. Thank God.

I can sorta relate. I could've died earlier this year. And that tube is terrible. I got really bad stomach pain. I thought it was my ulcer acting up as usually when I eat something spicy. But the pain got worse and I started to throw up. The pain got so intense I thought I was dying. I called emergancy and I'm still mindblown how the operator could even understand me as I could only scream out in pain. It literally felt like a alien was gonna burst out from my stomach. Well at the ER, I wasnt taken seriously bc "I could sleep so I couldnt be in that much pain". The real reason I "slept" was bc I was given such strong pain meds that I literally passed out until the effect wore off and I was pulled awake by the extreme pain. They finally decided to do a MRI (I think its called). And after that everything went fast. They found out that I had a pretty rare diagnose called Cekal Volvulus. And when the surgeon opened me, they was met with blackness and necrosis (I think its called), dead tissue pretty much. So they had to cut out the dead part and reattach my small bowls to my large intestine. The part that was removed had twisted itself around/into its own wall attachment. It had pretty much hanged itself. It is very rare in Caucasians, which is what I am, and has a pretty high mortality as it is hard to discover and usually gets wrongly diagnosed as IBS. It is however pretty common in Asians. I would actually love if Doctor Mike would make a video about Cekal Volvulus. After about half year, I went to the ER with stomach pain again. This time it was just a simple blockage. But I was told to keep an eye on my pooping and I must drink laxative as soon as I notice difficulties. And apparently there is a blockage diarrhea, caused by liquid managing to sip pass the blockage, which can trick one to think there's nothing wrong. I do have some issues that appeared after the surgery, but I can live with it. What do confuses me alot is that sweet-ish smell that my poop has since the surgery. Its superweird but yay for non stinky bathrooms. Lol. But the worst part from this is the anxiety I get as soon as I get some stomachache or heartburn. A simple thing as eaten or drinking a little too much that it cause a slightly discomfort, can cause an anxiety attack. I wouldnt even wish this upon my biggest enemy. A little note. A day or less after the surgery, they accidently gave me too high dose of the morfin/epidural or what the pain meds they attach to the spine is called, so I also got to experience what its like to not being able to move or feel my legs. It was freaky. My brain signal my legs to get up on the bed again, but nothing happened. It wore off pretty quickly after they lowered the dosage. Im glad I have a pretty high pain tolerance. Hehe.

Thanks for sharing your story and I hope you’re doing well now! I’d also like for Mike to explain this disease and the consequences of both the disease itself and of the medical procedures used to treat it (mainly the operation). In regards to your sweet smelling poop, if I had to take a guess, it would be that since they removed a part of your small intestine (right?) you have a lower surface area for nutrients to be absorbed, and since glucose (and fructose) is mainly absorbed through the small intestine, it would make sense that some of it is excreted and giving the sweet smell. What I can’t quite figure out though is that glucose is mainly absorbed though the jejunum (2nd part of the small intestine), and since your obstruction was later and nearer to the large intestine, I can’t see why the jejunum would be that affected. But I can read that fructose is also absorbed elsewhere in the small intestine, so fructose might be the culprit here 😅 again, just guessing

My mom has had 3 bowel obstructions, 2 requiring surgery, 1 just the tube. She has always had problems with her stomach and often complained about bloating, constipation, irritation, etc. but doctors basically chalked it up to poor diet and eventually she just lived life as if it was normal. One day she felt a lot pain in her abdomen, worse than expected, but she figured it was just the discomfort of constipation- that night she told me was a pain that you essentially cannot mistake as anything "normal." When Mark says stomach pain that you should see a doctor for (aside, yknow, chronic occurrences then yes see a doc) he means you'd know what kind of pain is an emergency- if you are even struggling to stand up straight and the pain is invading every thought, you need to go to the ER. Especially if you are bloated on top of that. Mom had terrible care at the hospital, doctors insisted she was suffering with other things from the stomach flu to trapped gas from constipation, since her "tests showed nothing," but she was kept under observation with pain meds. My dad said they were pretty dismissive of her pain and weren't really urgent with caring for her, it was honestly very bizarre. It really wasn't until 4 days later that she started vomiting up black and had severe mental disorientation (like she was delirious, it was terrifying), by then she was extremely bloated and nobody noted that she hadn't had a bowel movement- they never even diagnosed her with an obstruction because there was no imaging indicating she had anything going on. Which would be fair, but it wasn't until a first year actually noticed that there literally was never imaging tests done, literally NO xrays or anything. VERY bizarre. By the time they actually got one done, she was way too far gone from having anything besides emergency surgery. From what I understand, she was merely hours away from going into sepsis shock due to the extended amount of time a large buildup of fluid and waste had clogged up part of her intestine that it caused perforation, which began leaking out and infecting the area. Apparently the cause of the obstruction itself was a congenital growth in that section of the intestine and she was somehow lucky enough not to trigger an obstruction for up to 35 years. I'm not sure what it is called, I just know that it existed in her ever since development and very rare, and rarer for adults to be affected for the first time. Anyway, the surgery did result in scar tissue causing a couple other obstructions, but now she's very aware of the symptoms. It did take until the 2nd obstruction to also diagnose her with Crohn's, which also lends a more likelihood of obstructions than average. Bowel obstructions are absolutely no joke and people do die from them, and it can be as quick as a few days! Scary stuff!

I know no one will ever see this comment, but hearing this story was so heartwarming! For almost three months I was in and out of the hospital, sometimes even staying overnight I also had and Ng tube in my nose. The doctors where very rude and they kept trying to make us leave. One doctor tried to convince us I had a brain tumor, but he said “you don’t look like most people that have them, I don’t think an MRI is needed.” They also made me do a full cleanout because they said I was backed up, and after this was over we went to my GI doctor who said “you where not backed up.” And I am thing are you kidding me!!! I struggled with such a long time. I was vomiting all the time, so finally after a long wait I had an upper and lower endoscopy, in that they found nothing except that I was lactose intolerant... Literally my whole life doctors have told me I was lactose intolerant and they said your fine. But now we have proof! The worst part about all of this is the fact that about a year and a half ago I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. So I had an Upper GI for the 2 time in my life because I have already had one when I was three. So I had the upper GI and they tested my lactose intolerants and EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL!! And here we are to this day still having little off and on symptoms, but I am not eating any dairy or gluten. (because I have celiac disease) So uh yeah, I know the pain Markiplier... He pooped! 😂 Dr. Mike, I think it’ll be cool if you could collab with Corpse Husband and talk about all his ailments lol I think it would be very informative
@witchskee3 жыл бұрын
Bruh, if Corpse is comfortable with that idea, hell yeah! I don't want to insert the internet into his business if he's not down, but that could be super informative. Again, IF that's something he's comfortable doing. It's his business and if he doesn't want to explain his health to anyone, that's 100% valid and his decision. Another collab I never knew I wanted! Lol

As a therapist, seeing a comment like this is absolutely terrifying. Not only is it absolutely tone deaf, but you completely disregard Corpse’s feelings towards
@kristacalai97733 жыл бұрын
If Corpse wants to spread awareness about agoraphobia and GERD, Im absolutely all for it. But just suggesting it out of the blue, without his knowledge....is a different level of disgust I’ll never be able to explain. Please think about these people as real people and not just modes of entertainment.

Ugh I feel so bad for him, I have this same issue and have had small bowl obstructions over 10 times due to scar tissue and everytime they do surgery to correct the scar tissue, it causes more scar tissue. I have a scar that goes from my sternum all the way to about 3” past my bellybutton. To be honest getting the NG tube put while awake is worse than the obstruction even though the obstruction is extremely painful. This actually is life threatening because I waited once and started throwing up so bad I actually ruptured my intestines and had emergency surgery which I then caught MRSA from the hospital and ended up on lift support for 6 weeks and after that I was on TPN for almost 6 months through a PICC line in my arm. I still wait days with stomach pains because when I go into the hospital they act like I’m there only wanting pain meds and that it’s all in my head even though I have medical records since 2008 that I’ve had these issues and records going back to when I was 16 that I have complained of severe abdominal pain for no obvious reason. I actually had this issue back in November and the doctor told me it was just gas and I needed to fart. I was like I’ve been in this pain for a week something is wrong. I’m actually laying here at this exact moment with a heating pad in my stomach because of the pain but I know there is no point in going to the ER because they will act like I’m wasting their time and just be rude to me. I have a feeling that this issue will eventually kill me one day because I can not find any medical providers other than my PCP that gives a shit. He can order all kinds of stuff but if the specialist doesn’t care and pawns me off on someone else then I’m back at square one.

@@xenakisrah6872 Actually just had another one in November that was really bad, but I had a different team of doctors, since I went to a different hospital and they actually had the trauma team do my surgery and I have no idea what all those doctors did while I was knocked out for 8 hours, but this has been the first time I have felt this good in over 15 years since I had my first one.

Rapid triage is something that I really appreciate having access to. I'm unsure if there are similar services elsewhere, but in Australia we have Nurse On Call. It's a phone service that you call, they take Medicare information and they will provide basic health advice, recommend follow-up with your GP (General Practictioner or regular doctor) or to visit a hospital if it's more serious, or pass your call on to 000 (our 911 equivalent) if necessary. They will even pass the call on to mental health care support lines if that's what is needed. When it's late at night and some lingering ache gets worse, or if something else comes on suddenly but doesn't feel too bad, having a service that's not quite calling an ambulance, but is more immediate than booking a GP appointment is really comforting.
