Yeah it is sad. I’ve known a lot of therapists and had a few, and none of them talk in this way to a patient. Reinforcing shame in someone seems like it would strengthen the severity of their disordered eating. Dr. Mike was right to say that a true professional would be empathetic and try to understand why the person is behaving the way they are, why it’s comforting to them, find a way to heal what’s underneath.
@makaisenkiСағат бұрын
@@현현이-x8hif shaming worked better than counting calories... No one would be fat but the ultra IDGAF fiber creates a mesh net that can block absorption of some of your nutrients in the carbs you get with a lot of the fiber causes a lot of issues. Like you can be healthy and eat fiber but just because you're eating fiber doesn't mean you're healthier. If people want evidence of that when you freaking go look at the guy who's showing off his colostomy bag from when his colon got removed by the time you meet or cheese makes it down to your colon it's a completely liquidy substance it's not a solid drip of melted cheese. Meanwhile all the stuff that you put in like your broccoli cauliflower carrots whenever you swallow them they look pretty much the same and if he doesn't chew enough they get stuck and he has to push on his stomach in order to cause it to go into the bag. Like not only are they shaming people but they're freaking lying out there tucus.

I had pregnancy-induced pica due to anemia! I wasn't getting enough iron anymore and I would get INTENSE cravings to eat sand. I remember the first time it happened. I was looking out of my apartment window down at the courtyard in front and there was a sandbox set up for the kids living in the complex... and I just got this sudden intense craving to go downstairs and eat a fistful of the sand. I used to surf, so I know what taking a mouthful of sand feels and tastes like, and my mind was recreating it like "ooo yum wouldn't it be SO fun to feel that gritty CRUNCH between your teeth?" I immediately called my OB/GYN who had me come in right then. Even worse? He had a cactus garden outside his office FULL of sand and I had to physically restrain myself from going and eating the sand. It's SO freaky because your brain is telling you that this is as necessary as water and as delicious as your favorite meal on the planet.

I'm a mental health therapist and have an eating disorder myself and am just as frustrated (at least) as Dr. Mike is with these "professionals." The thing that stands out to me and bothers me so much is how it seems like they're casting a moral judgment on these people and shaming them, when food is morally neutral. It has nothing to do with being a good person, being a smart person, etc. They need compassionate and nonjudgmental help, just like someone with any other medical issue. And, I fear that having this type of experience of feeling shamed could turn them off to therapy and prevent them from getting help in the future.

After looking up the requirements to become a Nutrition Specialist and a Psychotherapist, neither of these people should be acting the way that they are. Even if neither strictly requires a doctoral degree, they should absolutely still know better. I can only assume that these "professionals" are either lying or are completely morally bankrupt. The people in the UK seemed like they actually cared about helping the person get better. They still did silly stunts and brought out the props, but they actually showed a level of support that wasn't present on the American side.

Also, is she craving this due to an actual nutritional deficit? She mentioned pregnant women. Chocolate is often craved because of a magnesium deficiency. Pickles often due to a need for sodium. I wonder if the cornstarch is a sleep issue or sickle cell and need for fast carbs for energy. Or a need for zinc and iron. This is why real bloodwork and testing is needed. I doubt it's just psychological.

Canadian here, that was not maple syrup. That was the fake stuff that is just regular sugar syrup. You can tell it's not real maple syrup because it is thick. I really enjoy your exploration of some of the intricacies of these situations. Obviously in a TV show they aren't usually going to get too into that stuff, really the best you can hope for is they do their over-the-top entertainment centered stuff for TV but do also offer the person legitimate help and focus more on the stuff you mention off-screen. I don't have super high hopes of that, but it is possible. It is important to point out how that isn't the norm though. It's also important to realize how complex these things can be, and to avoid just judging people without even considering what they may be going through. The human brain is a complicated thing and all sorts of seemingly weird and crazy behaviors/physiological reactions can come out of the processes going on in any one of our heads right this second. All it takes is the right situation in the right state of mind to send you down a path that can build up over time and end up with any number of odd behaviors and beliefs. It's not an uncommon thing even, it's just that most of the time our coping mechanisms or individual "quirks" aren't so extreme or so out of the ordinary that it turns heads or becomes a big problem for our health. It's very interesting stuff, how we work.

There's a reason it's classified as an eating disorder and not a habit.

I've said this before, these shows are often overdramatized by producers and roles of doctors and sometimes even the patients are filled in by actors. Most of the time, by the time they film the show, the patient has already gone through or has stopped participating in treatment. It's at that point the show runners begin casting and writing for the episode. Watch the credits for disclaimers.

Can you react to the song Epiphany by Taylor Swift, please? She wrote it after researching the Battle of Guadalcanal, which her grandfather fought in. He never spoke of it to anyone in his family and Taylor realized that health care providers might see things that they never want to speak of again everyday in hospitals. That is what the song is about. Everything about the song gives me goose bumps
