I’m Native American. We eat and have eaten clover and dandelions for many years. They are safe to eat in their natural form. The danger of getting them in the wild is that someone could have sprayed a pesticide or herbicide on them that you don’t know about. For our traditional foods we usually grow these in our own gardens. There are many plants that are safe and have good nutritional value that are not typically eaten in a European diet. The important thing is that they’re grown safely and not with unsafe chemicals sprayed on them.

Yep. That's the single biggest problem of 'found' fruit and plants. You don't know if they've been sprayed, or even if they're diseased (unless you know what you're looking at). Not to mention that eating random plants is a sure way to end up sick, or even dead if you don't know what they are.

FYI Every part of a dandelion is completely edible, and it's not at all weird to eat them. When the leaves are newly grown they're quite nice in salads or sandwiches (they become more bitter as they age), and they have a similar nutritional profile to spinach or other dark leafy greens. The flowers are a bit sweet and their nectar contains proteins. The roots may have some medicinal value, though more study is needed. Clovers are also completely edible, I used to eat the flowers as a kid because they're full of nectar which is sweet. That being said, I would NEVER get them off the side of the road like that family did. You have no idea what kinds of pesticides they could be coated with, if they're pulling up contaminates from the soil, not to mention the heavy load of pollutants coming from vehicle exhaust. It's insanely irresponsible, especially when you can easily grow these plants in containers or in your yard. It's also a bit scary to think they're butchering road kill. Dandelion root and chicory root have a fiber called inulin, which is really good for the intestines (health-wise). Also there have been some positive animal studies in helping fight colon cancer. However... kale (and I think dandelion too) is a chelator. If grown in good soil low in heavy metals, then it can assist in heavy metal removal from the body, but if grown in an area with heavy metals, lead, and other pollutants, well, it has an affinity to soak those things up so probably a bad idea. Edit: I am NOT a doctor and this is my informational opinion ONLY!

A lot of people sought her out on social media and cyber-bullied her, but she explains in other newer videos that she is NOT that extreme with any of her money-saving techniques. Dandelions are actually entirely edible and a great thing that foragers look for. If you just look up their nutritional information they're full of vitamins K, A, C, potassium, calcium, iron etc. People should only forage when they are absolutely sure of a plant/fungi but I think dandelions are pretty distinct. Absolute props to foragers as long as they make sure the plants/fungi are safe to eat!

About eating wild plants... If you've studied what is safe to eat, and you harvest from a clean area (not right next to a road etc), then it's not a bad idea! Dandelions have a lot of good things in them. And they're often the first thing up in spring, so you can get fresh greens into your diet sooner. Cattails also are good for food. And wild violets and nasturtiums are a pretty addition to a salad. Jewel weed is edible as a young green, the seeds are also tasty, and the juice of the mature plant helps relive skin issues from stinging nettles and poison ivy/oak. Obviously, this is just the beginning. What do you think our ancestors ate before there were grocery stores? Where do you think the garden plants came from? I realize that most of these "cheapskate" ideas are no good, or not best, but don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Just because it's different from "common" doesn't necessarily mean it's bad for people.

So long as you already know how to identify both the edible and poisonous plants and take from spots that likely haven't been peed on by dogs, it's a pretty sensible way to supplement a diet. My family goes blackberry picking round all the local woods. Go out for a walk with a bunch empty ice cream tubs and have blackberry crumble for dinner, then either freeze or make jam with the rest.
@yeshummingbird Жыл бұрын
Not to mention wild foraging for edible invasive plants is actually a GREAT way to help the ecosystem, by preventing their spread further, since the edible parts foraged from most plants are often the fruiting or flowering bodies (both seed-bearing) to begin with.
@suchnothing Жыл бұрын
My main issue is that they were foraging on the sides of roads and highways. Those spots are often blanket sprayed with pesticides, not to mention all the vehicle exhaust... even if you wash the plants, no way you've gotten the contaminants out. It's such a huge risk to your health, for a tiny bit of salad. Not worth. Their neighbor complaining that they're eating weeds is silly though. She mentioned dandelions and clovers, which are both entirely edible, taste great, and are very nutritious. Just grow the plants at home or forage them from parks and woods, away from heavy sources of contamination, and you're good to go.

Foraging IS great and IS a thing at least where I'm from, but there's a difference between foraging berries and mushrooms in a safe clean environment, and substituting an actual salad with weeds two feet from the highway. Just because a flower can be eaten technically, doesn't mean that it should.

@@yeshummingbird You do need to be careful where though and for what reason. If it is on someone elses land then make sure you have permission. Here in the UK we have had trouble with people picking wild garlic for commercial use which is illegal, any wild foraging you do has to be for your personal use but then you get people going town to town filling bags full of wild garlic or other things and taking it and selling it to restaurants because it happens to be trendy at that point. Its fine if some people from the community go and pick a little for their own use but the people who come in and pick it all and leave none for anyone else is a big problem, especially since they arent careful and do tend to pick it all so it doesnt always come back. It isnt sustainable and that is probably partly why foraging for commercial use is illegal.

Watching your reactions to processes is so refreshing and reinforcing my desire to transition into primary/preventative care. I’m an outpatient dialysis nurse and it sucks my soul. I care for my patients. But it makes me crazy how quickly the doctors are to throw meds at every thing rather than trying to understand what is causing the symptoms and fixing that. I try to encourage my patients to find out the root of the problem rather than searching for a bandaid for the symptoms.

I've known a couple of cheapskates over the years and they've always shocked but inspired me with their creativity in how to save/not spend money. But I now realise that the people that I've known were just smart penny-pinchers compared to the people featured in Doctor Mike's video. The people I knew would take extra packets of sugar and salt from restaurants, always take home leftovers to eat the next day, or use plastic utensils at home, etc but never did things like this that would put their health & safety in jeopardy. Thank you Doctor Mike for continuing to do videos like this, of people with different-looking lives, with interest, curiosity, compassion, sympathy and no judgement. The world needs more understanding people - ESPECIALLY health care professionals - like you!🥰👍

Hmmm. If they're okay stealing from the restaurants they might as well steal from grocery stores, too. That's a weird line to draw. You can buy a 16 oz container of iodized salt at Walmart for 57 cents. Or I suppose steal it and then you don't have to steal from 20 restaurants. But c'mon it's 57 cents, weird to habitually repeatedly steal instead of paying 57 cents. Is that the defence, "oh I don't steal that much each time so it's fine?" Ethically it seems worse to steal 20 cents 10 times then 57 cents once, so...

Gonna have to play the anthropology card here: Dandelions are a common food for most of the world. Every species of dandelion is entirely edible. They grow extremely easy and are difficult to completely kill off. I pick the dandelion greens from my backyard and cook them like collard greens, feed the raw ones to my chickens. They’re fantastic. Yes, we do also go to the grocery store and have a small garden, but why not save that little bit of extra money every now and then?

Dandelions and clovers have actually been eaten by people for centuries for example in england dandelions and clovers were used as filler for dishes, say for example your stew was pretty lean on ingredients, toss in some dandelions and your golden. The only harm I could see is that there is a whole range of bacteria and chemicals that might be on dandelions and clover now because of pesticides. It is so great when the doctor explains everything up front to the patient, regardless of the patient's age. The best visit to Emerg that I had with my son was when he was 7 and had a major asthma attack. The doctor got down on his knees to be at my son's level and explained what he was going to do, what it would feel like, and why he was doing it. He explained it to my son, not to me. He did it all again each time he had to repeat the Ventolin treatment (about 4 times), and again when he admitted my son. He also explained to my son that I would be allowed to stay in the room with him through the whole time he was in the hospital. This helped my son relax and not be scared
