Best way to quit soda and energy drinks is indeed cold turkey BUT you have to replace them with something else. When I quit cold turkey, I drank tea straight up (no milk, no sugar) instead. The tea didn't taste good at first but I drank it every time I was craving soda - which was often. I tried green tea, black tea, etc... After a month, I liked tea and had some favorites. Tea is good because you get a gentle dose of caffeine and it doesn't have sugar and all the gross stuff that sodas and energy drinks have. Good luck!

@sdfr45672 күн бұрын
For #2 Dr. Mike would likely want to know how much you are peeing (a little or a lot). For what that means, you can use his metric in this video with 16 oz, or two cups for full bladder capacity. If you are peeing a lot, you might be at a normal total volume for one day. If you are peeing not much, you might not be at a total volume for one day. For hydration and kidney function this total volume in 24 hours matters a lot to give an opinion.

Can you please do an in-depth video on the menopausal transition 50% of the population experiences and why the healthcare system has been so silent and dismissive of women experiencing the often debilitating effects on their physical, mental and emotional well-being. If any of my doctors had given me a heads up on what was coming when I was in my early 40's, I would have been prepared and taken steps. Even when I got a hysterectomy at 50, not one of doctors brought up post-menopausal symptoms, and I didn't know what to ask. It's really shameful that medical practioners are so poorly educated on this matter. I would be really interested in hearing your opinion. Perhaps a collaboration with Mama Doctor Jones?

Have any of you read Gail Sheehy’s The Silent Passage? Been around for decades. Oprah has a new book out this year on the topic. Can’t remember the name but searching “Oprah” and “menopause” will bring it up. The New Menopause came out in April of this year. Amazon has a top 10 list for books on menopause. I have received better information from books than either doctors or friends and family. Doctors haven’t wanted to take the time to talk about it thoroughly and other women keep claiming that they haven’t experienced any symptoms. My mum who is about to be 80 claims not to remember and I didn’t live close to her when she went through it. There are also good videos on KZbin. Mama Doctor Jones has at least one. There has been a change with regard to hormone replacement therapy. But I couldn’t give you chapter and verse on it. The gist was that HRT isn’t as dangerous for women in their 50s as previously thought. I decided not to take HRT based on my symptoms and my overall risk for breast cancer. I have decided to ride the storm. Don’t get me wrong, there are times when it is unpleasant, but I feel like there’s room in my life to accommodate this passage. I don’t have to try to cope with hot flashes at work for instance. All of my children are grown and all but one has left the nest. I don’t think of myself as fully retired but I am not currently working. I sold my business a couple years back and haven’t decided on my next chapter. Probably most important is that I have a loving, kind, and supportive husband who isn’t dismissive of my experience. The two things that have surprised me is breast pain and intense sexual interest. I knew that breast pain was possible; I just didn’t expect it to be more intense than the breast pain of puberty or pregnancy. And for me it has been much more intense. The change in sexual interest caught me off guard because most women complain of a lack of desire, and that happens, but being as randy as a young man? I had to dig deep into the blogosphere to find other women willing to discuss it. I told my husband that his role in this change is to be endlessly understanding and ever ready. There are times he reminds me that he is a man in his 50s. I think he prefers the sex pest to the woman who couldn’t be bothered. 😂 Top tip for dealing with hot flashes I found was keeping a spray bottle filled with water in the fridge so you can spray yourself down during a flush. The other advice I have embraced is to live while I’m awake and give myself permission to nap. So I’m up at 3 am doing laundry? I’ll cook dinner in the wee hours too. I don’t sleep longer than five hours at a stretch now. So I take naps when I need them. And I do stuff when I am awake even if it’s an odd time of day. I really really wish women were more open about it. It’s a major right of passage that we should be proud of. Did any of you see Drew Barrymore’s first hot flash? She had it on air. And she told everyone! One of the doctors in one of the many books I’ve read on menopause ( Sorry I don’t remember who or which book) said that instead of thinking of menopause as this big ending we should instead think of it is a “return” as our hormone levels end up being similar to our girlhoods. Many women report feeling more energetic, calmer, and more capable after menopause. We just have to get through perimenopause.😅

We've been together 18 years and, weather permitting, used miltiple quilts/blankets on our bed because she has issues attaining and maintaining deep sleep. We purchased a weighted blanket for our bed which has relieved a lot of her anxiety, allowing her to sleep better. I also know that friends of ours that have a child with Asperger's, using the weighted blaket makes a huge difference in his anxiety related behaviors. The skin of almost my entire left elbow was burned from the road, and my right hand was tore up. The only issue was my left hand, which only acquired about a 1x2 cm circular cut. They all healed well except for this one small cut! It is a noticeable bump, and it is still painful and tender, even though it is scar tissue and there is no longer a scab. Hey Dr. Mike, I just love your videos. I'm 20 now, and I have lower back pain. My heartbeat always remains fast, and I have low hb. What do you recommend to me, and what should I add to my diet?

Quick question: if you have completely grey or white hair, and you’ve lost all of your melanin, how do they still tan? Isn’t melanin in skin tones as well? Btw love your videos!!
@zekova14 күн бұрын
You just lose the melanin in your hair obviously. Not from your entire body 👅

Hey, Dr.Mike. I just wanted to say that your videos are absolutely amazing and useful to a medicine-interested 13 yo girl like me. I really like your medical advice but I would love it if you can explain the reason I have acute external otitis and the composition of the painful yellowish discharge inside of my ear. Thanks in advance and keep up the good work

Love your content, and I've had the botox a few months ago for hyperhidrosis under my arms. Not painful at all. I would recommend it! Going for my next treatment in a few days actually! 😊

27:15 had this happen before these pains were very different from cramps, so i called my gyno and when she ckecked, she told me it's an ovarian cyst she also assured me, that they're pretty harmless and basically heal on themselfs a few days later i was fine and never had it happen again

Hey Doctor Mike, I have two questions: When I eat or consume dairy, instead of getting diarrhea, I feel bloated and constipated, and it has been happening since I was young. Is their an explanation? Last one, I have a deviated septum, and I have serious headaches mostly on my left side - which is where the blockage is. My doctor said that the deviation is the cause of my headaches but idk if it really is. I am sensitive to light and extreme noises so I have to take precautions sometimes when going out. Also my headaches are more centered on the sides or my head and my face. I just want to know if there could be any other issue for the headaches.

Regarding the question on hats/caps causing baldness, I always assumed the correlation/causation was inverse (i.e. once guys start going bald they may start wearing hats more often to conceal it) Also, I know picking your nose with your finger isn't recommended, but what about using a Q-tip? Sometimes there are boogers that keep rattling around in there while I breathe no matter how much I try to blow into a tissue.

Idk if this is where you look at comments for your next comment video, but what you talked about with herpes outbreak got me thinking. I often have the sides of my lips split open with little sideways cuts but I've tested negative for herpes. Almost "you wanna know how I got these scars" Joker style but they're tiny and then I end up picking at them until they're big because of dermatillomania. Sometimes they get worse in cold weather but not always. What is happening???

I also get those. Never knew what caused them

I sometimes get rarely severe and sharp heart pains when I would drink, and it would last for a minute or so to the point I would spit out my drink on the floor kneel to the ground holding my chest, and I handle pain pretty well. This happened through my young teen to late teen years. Now I was diagnosed with a minor heart murmur, but what do you think?

Dr mike !! In regards to weighted blankets would it not correlate with how a hug can calm the CNS? Sometimes when I get a panic attack I have a friend lay on top of me and maybe it’s just placebo but the weight and constriction absolutely calms me down. Maybe I was just swaddled a lot as a baby and it has more to do with nurture than nature hahah eager to hear your take

Hi Dr. Mike, I am looking for answers. Almost a month ago now, I fell ill. I had a Fever for 4-5 days with temps ranging between 99.5-101.7. During that time I had an extremely sore throat and a bad cough. With those syptoms I got tested for Covid & Flu from a pharmacy which both tested negative. So I went to the doctor and asked for a strep test, that came back negative as well. That weekend I tried resting and recovering but I wasn't getting better. And wgile the Fever came down, my cough was getting worse. I was coughing up thick layers of mucous and my nose had dried nosebleeds. So the next week I went to a different doctor. She then put me on an antibiotic for 5 days and prescribed an OTC sleep syrup. I felt like the antibiotics were helping. The cough had slowed except for at night. So that went on fo4 several days. The antibiotics ended. Now it is been 4 weeks and I am still coughing. What could it be? P.s. I don't snoke or have asthma.

I've used a fan blowing on my head for over 30 years. I love it. But I do have neck problems. I have cervical radiculopothy. But it doesnt seem to cause me more neck problems. Only when I turn my head a certain way and only happens once in a while.

Question for a future video. What are the signs of tinnitus and how can I manage it without needing to go to a dortor, or should I go anyway. I get mild ringing in my ears sometimes, and while it doesn't bother me, I wanna know if it's normal.

Hey Dr mike, I was once told by a doctor that because of my blood type being A+, that I had lower stomach acid and therefore it is harder for me to digest certain foods like meats. Would love to hear your opinion on A blood types having lower stomach acid or about other differences in blood types.

Hey Dr. Mike, love your videos! Random question - how can I know if I have POTS or some other orthostatic condition or am just malnourished?
@Snow-c7n2 күн бұрын
I also would love a video on Postural orthostatic syndrome (POTS) I am 17 and active. My heart will go all the way to 190 BPM and as low as about 35 BPM. I don’t pass out however. My knees also will turn purple and my hands will turn ghostly white some. Our healthcare isn’t that great and they seem to brush off my symptoms a lot of the time but they did diagnose me with pots and put me on florinaf but I don’t know that it’s helping that much. Love your videos!! If I’m not a vet in the future then I want to be a doctor!!

I hated my life for this: I went to an ORL today, he asked to check my throat and do that aaah thingy, he picked a metal spatula from his tool box, sticked that thing in my throat then, put it back to the same tool box where he had other tools, I was so disgusted...🤢 Every time I remember it, it gets me sick Why do some doctors do that
