I started down the Probiotic/prebiotic journey recently along with a change in diet and have some recommendations for others thinking of doing the same. Food that have probiotic - Kimchi, Sauerkraut (fermented, make sure it mentions that it has live cultures, making it is also pretty easy), kefir, apple cider vinegar, kombucha, fermented foods (such as fermented pickles, but be careful, most pickles are made with vinegar instead of via fermentation). Prebiotic foods: Asparagus, Onions, garlic, artichokes, leeks, kiwi, Root veggies such as sweet potatoes, squash wild yams, parsnips. My nutritionist recommended having 2-3 servings a day of prebiotic and probiotic food and to try getting both (pre and probiotics) from foods and not supplements. If you plan your day/diet out right, you can get a good prebiotic intake going with minimal effort. Try the foods listed above, keep the ones that you like on your diet. Also research! You can find more foods that are in pre/pro biotic food list. At first you may get cramps, constipated, etc. But once your body gets used to probiotic intake, you will feel better than you did before (probably, unless there is something about you specifically which does not want the foods you are adding to your diet, see a doctor?). One last thing, change your diet! Look up why you should be eating organic food vs non organic. Research the amount of pesticide used in non organic veggies and what you are putting into your body when you eat things sprayed with pesticides freely. Drink more water (16 cups a day!). and look into intermittent fasting. If you can add all of these things to your routine, I think you will see great improvement as did I. I lost 10 pounds in the last month and feel much better (not that I was feeling bad to begin with). Good luck! Comment if you have any questions. I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice, just sharing my experience and advice I would give a friend trying to start a probiotic regiment.

Are you still managing to maintain this? I started about a week ago, and have constipation but not overly bad. But im going to carry on after reading this. But I'm hopeful as my body gets used to the changes and the micro bio gets healthier it will come off a little easier
@sahdevsinghrathore23842 жыл бұрын
Sustainability of a diet is important over following an Optimal diet. You lost weight with intermittent fasting because you created a CALORIC DEFICIT. Someone on keto will lose weight because they've RESTRICTED a complete food group, again creating a CALORIC DEFICIT. On the other hand, prebiotic/probiotics which you've mentioned are on point and should be included in one's diet.

@jenjencurls6 жыл бұрын
You should not take them unless you are deficient, and your doctor told you to take them. If that were the case it’ll most likely be a specific vitamin deficiency, and you would need to take just that one vitamin, not a multi-vitamin. The exact cause of the deficiency needs to be found, so you can treat the actual source of the problem. One example is Celiac’s disease, which damages the intestine, and interferes with absorption of nutrients. One common deficiency is B-12. Instead of just taking the B-12, you would need to stop eating gluten, so the body can heal and start absorbing the vitamin properly. The ideal way to get all your nutrients it’s through food. Taking multivitamins could actually be toxic, since you may be taking way more than the amount you need. This can cause hair loss, dizziness, fast hear beat, and more. You need the right amount of vitamins and minerals, not too much, not too little. Going to either of the extremes will cause symptoms and problems. I was just reading about this today, and been learning from my nutrition class this week. Another problem with vitamins is that they are not regulated, and manufacturers can put anything in there. The best way to get your vitamins is through a varied diet, high in fruits, veggies, fiber, etc.

That is good but how do you know that you need probiotics? what strains? and how can you have a long lasting results? I personally had IBS and other symptoms and here is exactly what I did: 1- fixed my diet, so that i know what healthy foods are. believe it or not, it is a big part of the solution. not sure what diet you follow but the less the processed food, the better your health will be. 2- you will hear a lot about taking supplements but after trying dozens, it is best when it is personalized to your needs. so you need to test and see what your body needs. I suggest you work with a Dietitian or find a legit course that teaches healthy living to go about this.

TheJawi the easiest way would be to relieve excess skin surgery because extra skin isn’t something like fat that you exercise away but I’m sure that if you google it and look on web md of a website with valuable credentials of an actual doctor then you’ll find something
@theoriginalbreadcrumb6 жыл бұрын
Loose skin after dramatic weightloss is caused by too rapid weight loss. You can't avoid it but you can reduce it quite dramatically by losing weight slowly and letting your skin adapt to it and of course some people have better skin then others and will have reduced amounts. Of course nobody want to use years to lose their weight so the only option you have then is operation.
@PavisGladius6 жыл бұрын
Plastic surgery
@nadiariggs51106 жыл бұрын
If it’s just slightly loose, hanging out after recent weight loss, your best bet is to keep exercising and drink tons of water. It took some time to stretch that skin out, right? It takes a similar amount of time for the skin to rebound. If the amount of loose skin is significant and painful, see a plastic surgeon- they usually have both non-surgical and surgical options. Congratulations on your weight loss(if you wanted to lose it!).

I also had some recurring eczema on my arms that wouldn’t go away. The nausea was causing me to miss school and for over a year, I went to heaps of doctors who couldn’t explain what was causing this, and who only seemed to focus on treating the symptoms with medications,etc. Finally, I found a really good GP who had extensive knowledge of the gut. He put me on a diet of no refined sugars, wheat, dairy or excess carbs to clear out candida, yeasts and bad bacteria in general. Within a week, all my eczema was gone and the episodes of feeling sick never came back. I wish more doctors understood the huge role our gut obviously plays in our overall health, like you and my doctor do :)

Hi! I left this comment earlier but avoid FODMAP's and try VSL3. Here is the comment I made earlier: as a microbiologist who focuses on the microbiome, just a note that beans/legumes are horrible for the microbiome. They have defense proteins as a function of the plant that makes their protein indigestible, and the mucinolytic and proteolytic bacteria binge eat them, and as a side effect of breaking down all that protein, destroy the gut lining as well- causing an array of problems. SECOND, kombucha is a horrible joke, it has yeast, which people with crohns disease are known to have antibodies to yeast as a biomarker. THIRD, store-bought yogurt does more harm than help because of all the emulsifiers they put in it that emulsify your gut lining as well. Homemade yogurt that is fermented enough so there's no dairy is great and delicious :) FOURTH I totally agree with Dr. Mike that if you are healthy, there is no need to take probiotics, just make healthy eating habits. BUT if you do have problems with indigestion, bloating, or any of the diseases Dr. Mike listed, VSL3, which you can buy at bartells, is one of the few probiotics that has research that shows it has a positive impact. Also avoid foods high in FODMAP's, google that term if you want to know which foods that is. Thanks Dr. Mike for your informative channel :)

I would try to take laxatives and even that barely helped. It was to a point that I was hospitalized because I couldn’t go in a week and I was in pain. I was told to take the senna laxative but even that barely worked. My doctor suggested probiotics instead and i have noticed it has been helping me so much. Thankfully I found something that helped me.

Okay, not entirely related to the video at hand, but I have a question. What is your stance on birth control as a medical professional? I suffer greatly from endometriosis, and have recently ended up with an ovarian cyst and it was recommended to me that I take it to prevent another one. I started the pill when I was 12, but it messed greatly with my depression and anxiety and I stopped taking it around 15. I am honestly afraid now as a college student to start the pill, get the shot, etc. and messing up my semester because it aggravates my anxiety, depression, or both. I've talked with my gynecologist, and voiced my concerns and we have a plan, but I wanted to know what your thoughts are on the widely debated use of birth control.

I would love to know your thoughts on vegetarian and gluten free diets, especially on how they relate to different races...
@1029blue5 жыл бұрын
I have celiac disease (and also follow a vegetarian diet by choice), and it seems that the general consensus is that healthy people should not follow a gluten-free diet, since it can be very restrictive and high in carbs, etc. However, some people without celiac disease seem to benefit from a gluten-free diet. I should note that what someone with celiac disease considers a "gluten-free" diet is oftentimes different from what the general population considers to be "gluten-free." People with celiac disease can't have any gluten. Ever. Not even in traces. I wish I could eat gluten, since gluten-free products, especially certified gluten-free ones, are extremely expensive. As the article that I'm linking here states, you should go see a doctor and get a proper diagnosis if you think you can't tolerate gluten. www.health.harvard.edu/blog/going-gluten-free-just-because-heres-what-you-need-to-know-201302205916

It gotten worse as I grow older. Every time I go on a holiday, I can never visit the toilet. My mom even gave me pills that make me go to the toilet because my stomach was bloating. I've recently discovered probiotics and i instantly could go to the toilet. It's great! My stomach doesn't bloat every time I eat( esp cuz I love rice and noodles a lot). I don't eat them everyday tho, maybe like 3 times a week just to keep my gut going. Also!!! Foods that make me go to toilet are kimchi and zucchini!! I noticed after eating them I could go hehe

I love this video ❤️ I've taken antibiotics so many times I've lost count, and it's taken a toll on my digestive system. I had a lot of respiratory diseases during my childhood, adult acne problems, infections, joint pains, depression and weight gain. My stomach got more and more sensitive as the years went by.. And every time I went to my doctor, he just treated my symptoms and didn't look at the cause/the whole picture. Luckily I got a recommendation from a friend to see a nutritionist and take a intolerance test. And it turned out I'm allergic to dairy products and I'm intolerant/sensitive to a lot of food groups. I also had a leaky gut and I've been taking probiotics in a liquid form for almost 2 years now. I definitely feel like the probiotics has helped a lot with my immune system. I haven't been sick once! I used to be the first one to get sick if anyone had the flu, a cold or anything else that was contagious.🙈 I didn't know that food could have such an effect on my health and immune system. I feel so much stronger, happier and I have so much more energi now that I eat clean. I had to cut a lot of food from my diet - absolutely everything thats processed and I feel like a hole new person😊 Thanks for posting videos Dr. Mike😊❤️

Dr. Mike can you make a video about diary. I have heard people say that drinking cow milk doesn't actually improve the level of calcium in the body but reduces it. Is that true? Thank you💚💚
@melissamallen25896 жыл бұрын
dairy causes inflammation, and most of the population is intolerant and they don't realize it (40% of europeans are not intolerant, but 95% of people from other ethnicities are intolerant). It also contains casein, which causes inflammation/ other issues. The acidity of milk causes calcium to leach out of the bones, and the calcium from the milk equalizes that. I would say that you do get calcium from dairy, but there are other sources, like spinach, which is a way better choice. It would be good to have dairy in moderation, and stick to hard cheeses with little lactose, or A2 milk that has a casein protein that is more similar to that of humans, not of cows. It would be advisable to avoid drinking a cup of milk thinking that's a healthy choice, and to avoid store-bought milks that are filled with emulsifiers. Home-made yogurt with A2 milk would be a perfect choice. Just giving you the information, and you can make your decisions off of that.

interesting concept. The mind manifests stress through body symptoms (gut issues, breathing issues, chest tightness, fainting) . This is what psychologists call a somatic response to a stressor. In terms of gut issues, I wonder if controlling what we eat and drink helps as a coping mechanism to regulate our stress levels. I am skeptical that the gut itself can cure anxiety and depression. However, awareness of body-mind connection and mindfulness of the foods we eat seems to be effective in helping stress induced gut issues. Like the 4th article provided in the description explains, the gut-brain axis relationship is bi-directional! Great video, it really sparked my interest.

After reading many scholarly articles on the matter, I've come to suspect that dysbiosis, among other things, plays a role in my autoimmune thyroiditis. I've been taking antibiotics relatively often due to recurrent UTIs, so I asked my endocrinologist to consider ordering a microbiome test, as well as an antibody test for Celiac disease in order to rule out intestinal permeability, but he looked at me with disdain and told me that I'm a hypochondriac. I guess I'm in the wrong for being interested in the underlying etiology of my condition, while endos just treat symptoms and pocket money. I feel that in modern medicine, etiology is subordinated to symptomatology a lot of the time and that many doctors are dogmatic, lack empathy and do not really pursue the best line of treatment for their patients. Also, why is it that only endocrinologists treat Hashimoto's and immunologists have no part in the treatment? It's an autoimmune disease after all, not a thyroid disease..
@melissamallen25896 жыл бұрын
so smart! agree with this
@rachellereynolds99796 жыл бұрын
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a type of autoimmune disease of the thyroid that leads to hypothyroidism. It is most definitely endocrine because a part of the your endocrine system is attacked and suffering - the culprit? your own immune system. Immunologists don't typically treat specific autoimmune diseases - for that you see a specialist who deals with that body system. For Crohns or ulcerative colitis you see a gastroenterologist, not an immunologist. For psoriasis you see a dermatologist. If I had environmental contact dermatitis I would see an immunologist for testing the direct cause of it, but in autoimmune diseases it's the immune system that is the direct cause of the disease. Autoimmune diseases are pretty much permanent. You can be in remission, but you will always be predisposed to it. Now, I agree with you on dysbiosis leading to autoimmune diseases, but if immunologists had a part in everything that involved the immune system, they'd also be infectious disease specialists, oncologists, neurologists, orthopedists, etc.
@romicor96 жыл бұрын
While celiac disease can be autoimmune, it has to do with your intestinal wall being less permeable to nutrients. In that scenario, even a normal microbiome would produce diarrhea because they have more to metabolize.

I should have known this during my teenage years. I'm 22 now and diagnosed with ADHD. I had a terrible ability to focus and my skin condition was really bad. I went through my entire teenage life with depression and anxiety. My diet was a mess which could explain why I was a mess. I will start eating more healthy and try to come up with a plan that works for me.
@thatgirlreacts54654 жыл бұрын
Meowdy Partner would you have any insight on how to spot someone who has ADHD?
@SylumSolosEverything4 жыл бұрын
@Meowdy WOW me too. I turned 23 just a few days ago and it wasnt until last year that I got diagnosed with ADHD. The whole past few months has been me discovering just how much being undiagnosed for so long during development messed up my life. So many missed opportunities. @That Girl Reacts adult ADHD is 90% internal and everyone copes and reacts to it differently. Mine for example, which is particularly bad, prevents me from completing the most basic tasks such as self-care. Due to the lack of neurotransmitter activity present in ADHD, it's more difficult for me to process sensory information when it comes in which can get me easily flooded to the point that I have to shut down and forget about it before a panic attack sets in. This can lead me to avoid things like eating properly or showering regularly depending on how touchy the ADHD is that day. In my teenage years, this was seen from others as just sloth and laziness... emotional processing is also more difficult to handle due to the lack of neurotransmitter activity, making things feel twice as intense as they should and thus leading to symptoms like RSD which creates social phobias and sometimes even suicidal ideation over miniscule things. ADHD behavior can manifest on the outside as a clusterfuck of symptoms that are first often misdiagnosed as other mental disorders until the psychiatrist or patient gets to the root cause of their problem. ADHD is easier to diagnose in kids because the overlying symptoms are pretty straight forward.. and itll be easier for them to learn to cope properly through guidance and controlled school environment. When left undiagnosed though, they're on their own to find their own healthy or unhealthy coping mechanisms which will often change as they and their environment changes.... making ADHD much more complicated to detect and treat as adults, depending on how their coping mechanisms manifest... so to answer your question, you cant spot ADHD (in adults) especially not on first sight. It can look like anything on the surface and the severity also depends on the individual.

SylumSolosEverything hmm. It’s just that I wonder if a friend of mine has it but you’re saying there are no signs I can watch for?
@SylumSolosEverything4 жыл бұрын
@@thatgirlreacts5465 there are but like with a lot of people in general, there can be many layers to types of behavior which could either be due to neurological conditions (ADHD) or personal conditions such as trauma. ADHD is a spectrum much like autism, some people have an easier time getting through their blockades than others. Even after being diagnosed last Spring, I still didn't know much or exactly how deeply the disorder rooted itself into my behavior (in social situations, my ADHD acting up would sometimes make me out to appear to others as the kind of person I dont want to be but due to sensory/emotional flooding, even if I caught myself in the moment I wouldnt be able to pull myself out of it) and lifestyle. I never understood why I was unable to do the things that other people could and because of that, I was never able to properly put those issues into words even for my therapist. Until recently when I decided to do some research on adult ADHD specifically and found this magazine site with articles that shed light on exactly what it was I was experiencing. (this article talks about the RSD symptom which is a big factor on the social side of life) www.additudemag.com/rejection-sensitive-dysphoria-and-adhd/ I'm gonna be real here, when I found this my first reactions were anger and grief.. Before this discovery, I thought I was just broken despite not being able to control or change the same way I've seen others do, and that it was something I would just have to accept and live with. The general knowledge of ADHD is being unable to focus on one thing at a time, unfinished projects, missed deadlines, skipping from one topic to the next without making a bridge, bouncing off of walls etc. but the problems that it can create underneath covers such a massive umbrella of things which could easily be mistaken for something else so I don't really blame the misdiagnosing and lack of understanding people have of it, even among some professionals in the field. (mental illness in general is already a pretty ignored topic, so oof) it's not really good to assume if someone has it or not especially when the persons not a professional but if you'd like to understand more of it, my best recommendation is exploring that article site up there - it includes both information on ADHD in kids and adults as well as peoples own stories of living with it. (edit: if your friend also thinks she might have ADHD, perhaps share that website with her so she can see for herself if any of the information or life stories are relatable to her. just understand that ADHD symptoms can also be comorbid with other disorders so the best option is to leave the diagnosing to a professional therapist. I hope this helps.)
@thatgirlreacts54654 жыл бұрын
SylumSolosEverything thank you I’ll def check it out as soon as I’m done typing this comment. The only think I know about ADHD is what you mentioned, difficulty focusing on one thing linked with an inability to finish tasks. Then, recently I found out that apparently being overly sensitive (emotionally) can be a part of it? Is that true? The reason why I wonder about that in terms of my friend is because she is overly sensitive, to the point that she obsesses over a negative comment about her, she even has to call her husband every time something happens, like if the kid has a fever, if the cat spilled coffee on the rug, if she can’t find something in the house, etc. Sometimes she will call him multiple times a day because she “can’t deal” with minor inconveniences or things that upset her on her own. She’s very self centered too, she has a way to make things about her and anything, anything AT ALL, that doesn’t go well she can’t resist but make comments like “ugh, never a dull moment”, like there is literally not a single inconvenience that she can just brush it off is part of living life, know what I mean? And every little thing that happens, she NEEDS to vent about it to anyone that will hear it. Idk, it just seems so much and so odd that I started thinking maybe there is something “wrong”, you know? That it’s not just her being annoying or actually self centered. Also, she shops a lot, she has multiples of several items, buys seemingly useless things and goes on shopping sprees when she’s upset. Now she IS capable of finishing tasks, I wouldn’t say she’s easily distracted, BUT she’s very disorganized, has a tremendous lack of discipline and (between you and me) does not have the best hygiene (which I’m only mentioning because you brought it up and now I’m like, is that a symptom?). Idk, what do you think? I’m not asking you to diagnose her, obv, I’m merely asking if you think I’m blowing this out of proportion and if not then what I should do about it. Oh, and how is ADHD diagnosed? I also wanted to ask if I could contact you with more questions but that’s creepy, right? Ps.: do you know if ADHD is hereditary? Cuz her daughter is an exact copy of her. Seriously. Edit: omg you mentioned RSD and I had no idea what that meant till I was done w my comment and clicked on the link you left but most of my comment describes how unusually sensitive my friend is! How wild is that? I know it does not mean she has it but still... wild. I’m going to read it up, thank you so much!!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I would be very interested if you can talk about the PTSD and the connexion with our guts. What we can do about it, etc. If in US there is any studies of this subject. I'm from France and the research here is close to zero. Cheers

That funny moment when the ad before this video was for probiotics 😂

That's not a coincidence mind you. KZbin has AIs that tries to match videos automatically.

Too funny. Hard as the algorithm writers work, the ads miss negative... Guess they figure it is worth a try.

My final exams for my Master in Clinical Nutrition is all about the GIT, Gut, Microbiome and non-communicable diseases. I especially found interesting how the microbiome plays a role in TMA and TMAO levels.

In the future he should look into teaching because I've learned more from his short videos than by going to class for a semester.

But a biology teacher doesnt even have half of a doctors knowledge and skill :(
@Mette_Abildgaard6 жыл бұрын
+Holy Knight Eh, I'd say that depends on the level said teacher educates at. If it where at, say, university-level then they'd likely be quite knowledgeable on the subject (or at the very least within a branch of biology), albeit they'd probably not be as *medically* well-versed as a medical doctor.

You should definitely make a video about pregnancies and give tips on how to manage diets and nutrition.

If you are traveling to any developing country I highly recommend bringing a probiotic you can be confident with you and taking it from the beginning of your trip. My friends and I who did got significantly less sick than those who didn’t. Do check to make sure that it doesn’t need any kind of special storage though.
