What IS racist are the myths and stereotypes that are spread around saying that, for example, black people are predispositioned to be uneducated criminals or people of Middle Eastern descent are terrorists, which on top of being totally untrue are also incredibly harmful ideas that affect the wellbeing of anyone belonging to those races. It's society itself making this accomplishment less common for them through discrimination that negatively impacts the likelihood of them being able to obtain good education and employment, and what this videos is showing everyone is that if they are given the same opportunities as white people, POC are just as capable of becoming doctors.

I knew about the drop in metabolic activity but hadn't heard that it stays roughly level after this quick drop in the mid-twenties. Do you have a link or study where I could read more about that? Specifically I'm interested in the mechanism of action: why would it drop suddenly and then hold steady? General entropy/degradation isn't enough to explain that
@gricius3 жыл бұрын
Yeah but you still didn’t get the point. It’s the person slowing down himself, like driving the car more instead of walking or having a full time job and forgetting exercise. That’s why studies then show that your mitochondrial activity has declined because you simply stopped activating your mitochondria due to lack of exercise.

My mom and gramma are both doctors, so it was veeeeery hard to get stuff like chips. I still tend to eat healthy. Healthy food simply makes me feel so much better and lighter. Still, my grandgrand gramma used to drink every day till she turned around 80, and she also always looked way too young. This video had great information, but I think that I was so eager to confirm my preconceived notions about how horrible aging is (due to anxiety/fear of aging) that I took every sugarcoated concession on something getting more difficult as you age as a sign that it actually IS that bad and I still SHOULD be scared/feel hopeless and distressed. I'm challenging that notion deliberately in this comment to encourage myself to actually hear what they said and act on it, which is to "prepare for old age by taking care of my body and mind NOW". I need to work harder to take care of myself so that I don't feel so unprepared for the end of my life. ...I really hate the idea of getting old. Thinking about how it's an inevitable decay really Really REALLY distresses me, to the point of panic sometimes. I think it may be pathological worry, though. My therapist told me that it's not productive to think about getting old as a negative thing only, since there are lots of wonderful, positive things about getting old. I just...I just really struggle to see them. I've got a really poor quality of early life and a bunch of medical traumas, so I'm fighting the notion that life is inherently painful and awful already, and thinking about how, at near 30, I'm already past what was supposed to be the best time of my life (which was awful because of all of that trauma and medical crap) is VERY VERY UPSETTING. How can you only go downhill from here if you never were uphill????

I don't like that this is rushed. Why it's not mentioned that older people do get less sleep, but then it's a sign of circadian problems, especially SCN. The myth has some roots, like yes, you need constant amount of sleep, but they don't address the root of the myth. I'm no expert in other issues, but when you do research on circadian rhythms, then you kinda uncover the sleep thing. Then I watched the rest of the video, and they kinda skim over all the myths, because these myths aren't pulled out of thin air, they get started somewhere (my comments on sleep can be applicable to weight gain and sex drive too - why DON'T THEY TALK ABOUT WHY!) Then about eyesight I disagree (as an optometrist) - there might be an environment plus genetic cocktail in some people who can do nothing but lose eyesight (to say that I disagree when he said that all conditions can be managed - but on the other hand if people visit their ophthalmologists and optometrists frequently, they can catch and manage conditions better), and some will retain perfect vision if they have the opposite factors. And then about the meds increasing.. kinda makes me pull my hair. Just on top of my head.. glaucoma? What lifestyle changes (I'm not gonna get into the latest glaucoma managements, but I'm questioning lifestyle changes exactly) can they make to get rid of those drops? Nothing as of yet.. Autoimmune disorders? Chronic illness? Wth? People tend to discover what's wrong with them later in life. So they start taking medication later in life. Therefore just by putting together statistics who takes more meds, older people will take more, just by the way time works. This seems kinda like oooh, let's build the perfect human who will take care of their bodies and then talk about those few people who don't live with typical issues related with being elderly (because I see them too in my practice). This stuff has to be taught in schools, but it's not debunking myths, because people who are older nowadays can't exactly turn back the clock and change their lifestyle. I liked the bit they did about diets and dentists, but this is just too surface. I'm not questioning the competence of these doctors, but I think this segment had to be constructed differently and be way, way longer. This should be called "what to do to avoid typical problematic aging, where we've found our myths" but it's not debunking. At the end I'm gonna throw this out there: CELLULAR SENESCENCE (and quietly question why they didn't talk about it at all)

@@breadjinnie5495 The definition of "broke" varies based on your perspective. Being a college student is a resource and a privilege.

For people saying that produce is expensive for most people, there was a report done by the USDA in 2011 that mentions Americans can satisfy their vegetables and fruits requirements for about $2.50 a day (2011 is old and this has probably increased due to inflation). Their report accounted for lost cost due to value loss from removal of inedible parts (cutting broccoli stem off) and nutritional loss from cooking. In my house, we buy fresh produce because we know we will use it that week since we plan our meals on Sunday. The slightly higher cost is justified because we don't throw our money away in the garbage. For some things like berries and broccoli, we rarely buy fresh since buying frozen extends shelf life. Buying canned veggies and fruits also counts and although it's not fresh, you can remove the excess preservatives by rinsing. Unfortunately, farming of fresh produce requires more human labor than grain crops for processed food. The US government also subsidizes grain, corn and soy crops making them cheaper for the consumer but it doesn't do the same for most leafy vegetables.

What they say at "myth 6" is rather incorrect. At a certain age, women experience menopause and men's testosterone levels decrease continuously over the years. Such hormonal changes affect many things, including fat storage. I can't tell you how menopause affects women off the top of my head. But regarding men, they will be less likely to gain muscle mass and more prone to storing fat. So, actually, men need to ensure that they *lose* some weight when they're around 50 to 65 years old. If a man weighs, for example, 70 kg when he's 40, and still weighs 70 kg when he's 70, his body fat percentage will have increased.

PLEASE HELP🙏🙏 Hi there I was wondering if you could give me some advice. My mother is currently in her late forties and struggles with chronic back pain. Ever since she was a young adult she has suffered from back pain especially after carrying heavy objects. She had three children- my two brothers and I- between her late 20’s and early 30’s. She had to be in a wheelchair in the weeks before giving birth as the pain in her hips and back was too much to walk. Her hips caused her pain for many years after having us but thankfully that is not a problem anymore. I think it was in 2014/15 that she got a bulging disc after jumping too high on a trampoline which caused her a lot of pain. At the end of 2016, we were leaving to go on a family holiday overseas and my mom wanted to be free of back pain for the travelling so she booked to get a spinal epidural. Unfortunately, the doctor/ nurse made a mistake and caused her spinal fluid to leak, which we only figured out when we had taken her to the hospital overseas after she had been suffering a terrible migraine during our flight and a couple days there. I am not sure at what point or which event caused it but in 2017 a piece of her disc broke off and was pressing on her nerve, this left her almost bedridden and in severe pain. Soon after she underwent surgery to have it removed. Now it has been almost 6 years since then and although the surgery definitely improved her condition she has never fully recovered. She cannot pick up anything, do any physical household chores, go on long walks or even sit for too long. She has tried physiotherapy, cryotherapy and doing the little exercises the doctor prescribed her but she feels no improvement. Something she really struggles with is her weight and her body image. Most of her life she has been tall and slim but due to her back pain she is unable to exercise. She is 174cm and 78kg which is a bit overweight according to the BMI scale but she doesn't look bad at all, however she feels most comfortable with herself when she is 10kgs less at 68. She has tried almost every form of exercise- Zumba, Pilates, Walking, Water aerobics- and she always takes care to do only what feels comfortable however even then the exercise worsens her back pain. Please let me know if you have any treatments or therapies you think might work for her as well as any ideas on ways she could exercise pain free to get back to her happy weight. Thank you

Wrong debunk 00:37 According to Piaget, humans normally develop the abstract thinking by age 11-16. Additionally, according to our current evidence (nih.gov), abstract thinking declines less than concrete thininking. Nonetheless, both decline.
@jeffreym684 жыл бұрын
Piaget studied school children without the advantages of modern research methods. Later psychologists were able to show using brain scans that abstract thinking increases as the frontal lobe develops and our emotions and cognitions are integrated. This research indicates typical age at which this completes is our early 20s, with some research indicating an average 2 year delay for males.

@@jeffreym68 I am not arguing the final point of myelination of the prefrontal cortex which is paramount to the abstract thinking. But it is expected that children should be able to understand the meaning of "rolling stones gather no moss" at the age 11-16. The main emphasis of my statement is that both abstract and concrete thinking will decline as we age. It is just a part of life...

These two experts propel myths. They make it seem like aging happens because of your beliefs. Aging happens. It's unavoidable. Your teeth wear out because they are under constant erosion for your whole life. As you get older, cell replacement is less efficient, so even with the most amazing care and diet, your gums will recede. Fact. Your eyesight will go bad. Fact. Everyone becomes far-sided. Old lens don't bend as much. All women will go through menopause, which changes your sex drive. Changes your bone density( but you can take Rx). Only way to avoid these changes is to die young.
