I went in for a voluntary colonscopy/gastroscopy combo at 28 years because I had been diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma and I was terrified it had spread again (I started experiencing heartburn that wouldn't respond to my normal PPI). My husband decided to just go through the process with me (at 35 years old) and they ended up finding polyps in him. Now he's going to go every 2 years so that we can stay on top of it. I had multiple colonoscopies before they found my cancer. That was because the tumour was right by my anus, and unless the doctor turns the scope around to have a 'look at the exit' they can easily miss seeing polyps or tumours in this location. It's been almost 7 years since my surgery, and I'm still alive and kicking, but it's worth asking your doctor about this detail if you have any of the classic signs of colon cancer and your scope comes back clean.

My grandfather on my dad's side had colon cancer when he was 71. They were able to remove the section of the colon that was affected without any need for radiation or chemo since they caught it in the early stages- because of a regular colonoscopy. That and I'm a bit of a germaphobe so going to a doctor or hospital where sick people congregate is just not a pleasurable experience for me no matter what I'm doing there. Get me in and get it over with so I can get outta there. Problem is most doctors or hospitals are not in much of a hurry. You check in and wait around for an hour. They call you back to a room and a nurse takes your vitals where you then wait around for another half an hour or so for the doctor to show up. They do a couple of tests and then you wait around for 45 minutes waiting for results.

I ended up in the ER with severe LLQ pain several months ago. I was diagnosed with pretty bad constipation. Since this is really far from my normal situation, I knew something was wrong and set up a colonoscopy. A very large polyp was found in my sigmoid colon that had been causing a partial blockage. The Dr. Immediately scheduled me for a sigmoidoscopy to follow up and verify that the entire polyp had been removed. It had not and during the second procedure more tissue was removed. The pathology from the first procedure came back benign, but the second came back “suspicious.” Now I’m to be treated to a third procedure. Joy! Oh, and I now have my first ever tattoo - inside my colon.

My dad had colon cancer, and i started to have blood in my stool very early, at age 20 or so. I never thought much of it, i just figured its normal to have some occasional blood, because of burst capillaries or whatever. Never had constipation, or pain or anything. At age 38 the blood got thicker and slimy and more red, so i decided after almost 2 decades to see a doctor about it. Did a colonoskopy, they found a big polyp and took care of it, im totally fine now, and no blood whatsoever after the procedure. The gastro doc told me i did the very best thing i could do and not wait for the procedure. If your doc tells you, you dont have to worry before the age of 40...its bullshit... Go do the procedure no matter the age. Especially if cancer runs in the family. DUUUUUDE, I have a tortuous colon too!!!! I was gonna ask for you to do a video on these. Not only did you deliver but it’s so interesting hearing your own personal experience. I was 37 and having MAJOR gut issues… sometimes a week or more of constipation followed by, sudden explosive diarrhea (talk about embarrassing!). It got to the point where I couldn’t go out anywhere unless I knew there was a bathroom nearby. Constant bloating and pain too, and the bloody poo was what finally prompted me to go in. They knocked me COMPLETELY out for my colonoscopy and I didn’t find out until afterwards when they woke me up to go over everything. He said, “you’re fine, just extra long and kinky”. To which I replied “tell that to my husband.” 😏 the blood was from internal hemorrhoids. The GI doctor suggested that I eat a more plant-based diet and restrict my meat intake since it’s digested so much quicker and begins to “rot” before it can be expelled. Problems (mostly) solved!

That's half of his colon that could currently or eventually have neoplasms, strictures, diverticula, colitis, etc which are totally unobservable and unable to be biopsied traditionally. I’m 40 and I’ve already had dozens and dozens of sigmoidoscopies, total colonoscopies, and upper endoscopies. Luckily I am completely sedated invasive surgery style because otherwise I squirm from the pain and that’s dangerous. My intestines are often inflamed so it’s very tight even with air expansion. Don’t worry it’s NOT painful at all for healthy people! And even if it was you won’t remember due to the “twilight sedation”. DO NOT put it off out of anxiety. You have my guarantee as a veteran scope receiver that it’s not a big deal especially if it’s just exploratory due to age.

@Jalen Harris I‘m 23 and I already had 7(?)ish. Doctors don‘t know why but I develop several polyps on a regular basis that could cause cancer in under a year. That‘s why I receive check ups often (and with that I mean operations where they remove them). Other people with diseases like Morbus Crohn receive cortison therapy this way to help with inflamation (I think! Sorry if I‘m wrong on that one). What I wanted to point out is: these things are often related to genetics and not bad eating habits.

I had a colonoscopy at 17 because I've had issues going to the bathroom since I was a baby and it got really bad after I turned 12. Anyway, I had to wait all morning and afternoon without having eaten anything the day of the procedure and was very cranky, and after the procedure they put me in an open room that was packed with other patients and their carers, pretty much naked from the waist down, just covered by the hospital gown and my pants and underwear on the foot of the bed. No privacy. Then I had to wait for a week for the results, which I never got to see because I was a minor and they wanted an adult to come pick them up with me, and neither of my parents were willing or able to do so and I didn't know what to do. So I went through the whole experience for nothing. I'm still alive 16 years later so I'm pretty sure it wasn't cancer or something else deadly, so I guess it doesn't matter.

I'm 37 now, and about 3 years ago my doctor scheduled an endoscopy to investigate a positive blood search on a stool test. Then I asked if was possible to do a colonoscopy together with an endoscopy using same anesthesia. The doctor said yes, then he prescribed both examinations. I was very comfortable because in 2012 I had a thymoma B3 removed from my chest, together with my left upper lung lobe (the thymoma was adhered there). I value life, and periodically I go to the doctor to make a check up. The colonoscopy exam was OK, but the endoscopy exam showed that I had a little stomach inflammation, treated with anti acids (called pantoprazol here) About my thymoma, it was a tybe B3 and was 9cm large, was completely removed. I've done radiotherapy and yearly for 10 years tomography to check if I was healed. It did never come back. Dr if possible make a video about thymoma?

@@milosstojanovic4623 yes, 9cm on its biggest axis. It was discovered after I traveled by bus via a bad highway (full of holes on the street), then the tumor did loose from the chest bones, and then the movement of the lungs made it scrub inside the chest's bones. It sounded very strange, then a little fever started and I did go to the hospital. They took a r-ray and then a tomography that confirmed the condition. All blood test including tumoral blood test, examination of the pleura fluid indicators were normal, no other diseases or similar cases in my family. @@anonymous4gent - don't take the doctor's refusal of colonoscopy as gospel. Insist on it as long as insurance can pay for it. If not, it can be expensive. Yikes Justin, that sounds pretty intense! I guess it might be different in the US, because in Australia, colonoscopies are performed under twilight sedation, so you're out cold but the recovery is much quicker. I'm joining the 35 club this year, but having chronic upper GI issues, I've already discussed these things with my gastroenterologist, no need for a colonoscopy just yet, unless something drastically changes. For now, it's under control. I've recently had a family member (in their 70s) treated for bowel cancer, so it's something I have to look out for in the future. It's also great that they've dropped the recommended age to 45 because there are so many young people getting diagnosed with bowel cancers. Hope it catches on here. I mean, we have the cancer testing kits (they screen for small traces of blood in the stools), but they are only sent out to people between 55 and 74, plus it's a matter of getting people to do them.

The prep isn’t pleasant and it’s super important to get the good gut flora back afterward. They are part of my life now. Thanks for making these videos and sharing your personal experiences.

my sister in law had to swallow a double fisheye camera "pill"with little flashing lights and wore a pack it transmitted photos to. I was disappointed she flushed it afterwards, I would have rinsed it off and kept it if it were me! I posted my pretty coloured endoscopy photos to my Facebook page 🤣 said it was a selfie.

At 37 I had a Sigmoidoscopy. Fortunately my cancer was in the transverse colon so when the scope couldn’t pass I immediately had a colonoscopy. Within the week my stage 2b tumors were removed and I started chemo. Newly married and no kids we were afraid that chemo would cause infertility. Happily in 2004 we welcomed our only child. Get tested! It’s treatable!

Is it still true that the insurance companies won't pay for a regular screening colonoscopy (without symptoms) until a person reaches the age of 50? If I were a young healthy 40 something year old guy with the ability to afford the procedure, I have it down at age 45. Your insurance company may agree with you to assist in paying at least for partial payment, including the anesthesiologist, who is absolutely necessary to give "moderate", not "light" sedation which includes the miracle sedative, Propofol ( Diprivan). If you have the money, it's worth the rest of your life to know whether you are one of those people subject to early benign polyps. Those benign polyps at age 45 can become cancer years later. It's so easy during a colonoscopy for the doctor to simply "snip" those tiny polyps off before they grow larger and older and become possibly cancerous. Trust me, the worst part of a colonoscopy is the preparation by drinking the liquid to clean out your colon. The easy part is to let them give you Propofol. You will have the best sleep you've ever had in your life. No wonder Michael Jackson wanted more of it. See below for more details from my life experience.

I had a colonoscopy in my early fifties and it went horribly wrong. The anesthesia didn’t work and I was awake and felt everything. I kept screaming at the doctor to stop but he refused. I had one small benign polyp which I felt when he looped the wire around it and cut it off. It was so bad that the attending nurse came into the recovery room and apologized to me. I swore then that I’d never have another one and I never have. I do, however, do the Cologard test religiously every three years.

Almost the same thing happened to me. I had a colonoscopy and am on opioids for chronic pain. They gave me the usual dose of meds and of course I woke up to the doctor doing the deed. Two nurses had to hold me down. Since they can't seem to sedate me adequately, I'm terrified of doing another one. I do the Cologuard too. We're birds of a feather.

What happened to you is a crime. Consent is key to medical procedures, and can be withdrawn at any time. To refuse to do so is battery, and is a serious criminal offence. And if this doctor did it to you, I am confident he's done it to hundreds of other people.

@@VoIcanoman it definitely should have been reported at a minimum. I don't know where Diane or Joan are, but hospitals here have a Patient Advocate. But if the hospital refuses to take action, the media is usually ready to report on such things.
@VoIcanoman
@VoIcanoman Жыл бұрын
@@lesleywilliams1210 Indeed. I am training in Radiographic Technology, and have had it drummed into my head for two years now how the patient's (continued) consent is a prerequisite for any procedure, be it invasive or non-invasive, and that it can be withdrawn at any time. And I've been the one listening to people decline a procedure (from x-rays, to barium enemas and esophagrams) and following their wishes (after explaining why a doctor thinks they should have it done, and the possible ramifications of not doing it - persuasion is fine, but at the end of the day, the choice is the patient's). Sometimes I think that the patient is maybe not mentally competent, but that's not for me to decide; if a doctor believes that, they can petition a court to assess the patient. But until that happens, the patient is in charge, and can control what care they do and don't receive. And it is a crime to proceed, knowing that consent has been withdrawn. Doctors can lose their licenses and even go to jail for disregarding a patient's wishes.

medications tend to not work as well as they should on me, so I remember most of the colonoscopy that I had, and it was really awful. I remember I kept saying it hurt and eventually asked for them to nock me out more which I still remember feeling pain after they gave me extra anesthetic. I was told I probably wouldn't remember anything the next day... but nope I still remember it.

@@amayasasaki2848 that’s insane that they didn’t just fully put you out, maybe they couldn’t with the epidural in? Either way that sounds awful, I couldn’t imagine operating on someone who was feeling everything. I actually also had a sinus procedure that I think was one of if not THE worst experience of my life. Basically the surgeon was cutting out scar tissue out of my sinuses, and the anesthetic was just a spray. And the spray alone was painful enough, but it also of course didn’t work at all whatsoever, so I felt him cutting in my nose, but I couldn’t move or talk because I had a scalpel up my nose and I was trying not to choke on all the blood running down my throat as well as trying not to sneeze because the pain was making me feel like I had to. He then used I think acid to cauterize it and I also felt that. I just refuse to have any procedures unless they’re prepared to full on horse tranquilize me now because I’ve had too many bad experiences like that 😭 Sorry you had to go through a similar situation I can’t imagine!

I have a redundant colon as well. My GI also tried the pediatric scope but I don’t remember being told any of this because of was well sedated. @SG-bs6dm
@SG-bs6dm Жыл бұрын
@@wesley815 the prep is worse than for a regular one - in addition to the purgative you also have to drink a dye. Then at the facility you get undressed, lay down at the CT machine and then a tube is inserted into the rectum about 12-15” and air is pumped in until the belly is somewhat distended. It was difficult keeping the air from escaping. If too much air escapes they pump more in. The CT scan takes about 20 minutes and then it’s done. Unlike a normal colonoscopy there is no sedative. I would rather have to undergo a normal colonoscopy annually than have to go through this less often.

Love your videos and am in awe of your ability to be so clear and engaging. I’m now 53 and had suffered for 16 years with acute episodes of projectile vomiting and acute abdominal pain. Resulting in regular hospital admissions and MRI , CAT Scans, colonoscopy endoscopy. However, no diagnosis was ever given. At different points in time, my appendix & my gallbladder were removed. Years later I was informed there was nothing wrong with the appendix. It took refusing to accept the most recent ‘we don’t know what’s wrong with you, some people just live with this level of pain’, to eventually get to see a gastroenterologist who finally listened to me and answered my ? “But Why am I always anaemic”? I’m a healthy weight, I teach yoga, I don’t smoke or drink and have always eaten a good range of a vegetarian diet. Finally I was given a contrast MRCP scan and another contrast MRI And it showed I had two areas of structuring at the lower end of my small bowel. I had a bowel resection in 2022. I can now eat solid food, fibre, vegetables, fruit etc etc. Crohn’s disease has been put forward as to the cause of the structuring. I’m not convinced as I have never had any type of Crohn’s symptoms. If I hadn’t paid privately to see the gastroenterologist I’d still be waiting on the NHS and if I hadn’t sought a second opinion by a revered gastro consultant I’d have been offered a crse of steroids on the nhs. My gastro surgeon confirmed after the surgery that I had what would be described as an almost complete bowel obstruction due to structuring and steroids as he suspected from the latter specialist scans would have made no difference to the severity of the obstruction themselves. The surgery was a success. I’ve had no episodes since last June and continue to enjoy solid food instead of just liquids. Thank you for sharing your incredible knowledge. 🙏

I am sorry to hear that your colonoscopy had issues. Better to know than to not know. I had my first and only colonoscopy a year-and-a-half ago. I did not take sedation so I could watch the entire procedure. Everything was clean and smooth with arteries and veins visible through the walls and no structural issues. He even went into the lower end of the small intestine. He laughed when I started commenting that my villa were waving to me like stalks of wheat in a field. They did not find any reason as to why my blood count is low, even though I told them that I tend towards anemia. I'm going to have a follow-up sometime this summer.

My colonoscopy experience was miserable, ended up being aborted due to discomfort. The prep was miserable and I don't think I was able to finish the astonishing amount of vile liquid. I only really remember having to go to the ER afterwards due to vomiting and pooping blood (I'm assuming because of the biopsies taken). To make things even better, the procedure was assigned with very little preliminary diagnosis and told me absolutely nothing! I was only 19 at the time and should've rejected the procedure. I still have severe, unfixed stomach issues. I think I'd rather get colon cancer than go through that procedure again.

That is probably because of uncappable personnel (we have here also those kind of doctors or idiot interns), or you have some serious problem, maybe its best to ask other doctor, and do some scan, severe pain is never good, its best to do other exams before something gets more complicated.
