I'm a GI nurse; when we have a patient who is suspected of being lactose intolerant or having lactose malabsorption - someone having abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, bloating from gas, poor weight gain in younger kids - we can actually take a small piece of tissue called a biopsy from the 2nd part of the duodenum and test it for a lack of dissacaridase(s). This was a great breakdown of lactose intolerance. I was born without the ability to process lactose, including breast milk. I vomited up most of what I was fed. The doctor ended up putting me on soy (not too common in the early 1970s). As a kid I did eat ice cream, cheese, and have milk with my cereal, but had the symptoms you describe. We had to limit what and when I could consume dairy. As an adult I even tried Lact-Aid, but after a short time of being on it, I had the same symptoms as with regular dairy. These days I manage my symptoms pretty well, while still having the occasional dairy treat (home made ice cream!) and natural cheese doesn't usually bother me. One other problem I have with dairy is that sometimes it can make me pass out. I haven't heard of anyone else with this issue. As a kid it could either make me hyper, or sleepy; now as an adult I can't risk driving after having dairy as I almost had a wreck on the highway because I felt drugged. Any insight on this would be most welcome.

Casein in bovine milk and human breast milk (all mammal milk to some degree) break down into Opioid peptides known to have opioid activity and trigger the brain's opioid receptors. It’s nature’s way to ensure babies latch and feed. For adults who (in theory) no longer need mother’s milk for nutrition it can act as an addiction esp if emulsifiers and sugars are added. Maybe more so if you continue to make high levels of lactase. Just google dairy opioids. Enjoy your ice-cream.😉

I feel sorry for people with any sort of food intolerance. I'm definitely of European descent, and never had any sort of lactose problem whatsoever. I didn't like milk and so wouldn't drink it, didn't really care for ice cream, but I could eat all the cheese and yogurt I wanted every day and never had digestive issues. Now I'm vegan, so I use cheese substitutes instead (Daiya is the best). As for yogurt, there's still no good substitute where I live.

Same! My mother has native ancestry, but my father is European, so I can tolerate lactose mostly fine. But I'm vegetarian with vegan tendencies, so I mostly avoid it. My nutritionist insists that I eat some dairy for the calcium since I have bioavailability issues with supplements since I'm an organ transplant recipient, so I do have to eat some cheese and greek style yogurt (which is fine by me as long as I get it from dairy farms I've consulted at professionally).

Hm. I don't really understand your comment. We do know, how it works. And as someone already pointed out... it's not a disease. There's nothing at all wrong with you, if you're lactose intolerant. You can even eat certain dairy products, that are low in lactose, like cream or aged cheeses. Or you can take lactase tablets. Maybe not a great solution for everyday life, but will allow you to eat the occasional piece of cake or ice cream or such. And for milk, there are plenty of substitutes, these days.

I would say I am lactose persistent at this time in my life. growing up on a dairy farm drinking full fat milk, and then having a great love for cottage cheese (use it as a secondary protein source) I've never had any problems. but I will keep in mind that if I go off cottage cheese/other dairy later in life, I could switch to being intalarant. Thank you for explaining what causes the symptems of lactose intalerance.

Fascinating. Very well explained. If I have a large milkshake I can occasionally experience this, if I have two, which I used to, it would create exactly this effect. Its not the 22 hours of digestion either it would happen about an hour after. This explanation makes it very logical to understand.

I hope I never lose my lactase persistence. And you're telling me the best way known to help that is to keep enjoying dairy products with abandon.. um, ok! Haha. We discovered that my husband is now lactose intolerant about two years ago. I would say, in retrospect, that the decline probably happened over about 10 years. It was only then that we discussed the symptoms with the doctor because it really was bad. Not just for him but everyone around too! It had never occurred to us that lactose was the problem since for the first 30ish years of his life he consumed it with no problems. We initially thought the doctor was barking up the wrong tree when he suggested eliminating lactose for a while as an experiment, but we did it anyway. Yeah, we realised within just a few days to a week that we were wrong and it definitely was lactose intolerance. On the plus side, things are much better now with a combination of using lactose free alternatives, lactase pills and sometimes he just goes without. I have learned a bit through this process about lactase persistence and how some people have it and don't and some of the genetic stuff behind it all, it was really great in this video to be able to connect all that with what is happening in the digestive system at each point. Very informative video, thankyou!

This makes so much sense. As a kid I didn't have any issues with dairy, but we also had fresh milk with the cream on top. My symptoms started when we had to start buying store milk. I can have some dairy but not all and I think part of it is how it's processed. I can't drink full cream milk but can have full cream ice cream. I can have one brand of yoghurt but not another. Absolutely no soft cheeses. I tried A2 milk (meant to be good for lactose intolerance) and still had symptoms. I just keep my dairy intake to a minimum and keep away from milk.

Have you ever visited a dairy farm and asked why calves are separated from their mothers? It's for the health and safety of the calf. Dairy calves are born with very few fat reserves which are quickly used up in cold weather, especially if it is also wet as it often is in spring and autumn. Calves can get scours very easily out on pasture with access to endless milk (seeing as dairy cows produce enough to feed 4 calves) which leads to dehydration and death very quickly. Out in a field that would be impossible to monitor so more calves would die. Cows can bully calves, cows in heat can attempt to mount calves and severely injure if not kill them, calves can spread disease by sucking on multiple cows. It's for the good health of the whole herd. I keep a few cows that I also milk for my own supply of delicious milk. Even I separate calves soon after birth because I've experienced the bullying of a calf and I've also had a calf rip it's mother's teats to shreds. I also appreciate having access to veal from bobby calves because it's one of the very few things that doesn't upset my rescue cats stomach.

It's never that easy. Did they talk about raw dairy vs.pasteurized diary? Once diary is pasteurized it becomes a completely different entity. It's not even milk anymore. Everything that is nutritious is destroyed when pasteurized. As a matter of fact, once pasteurized it actually becomes highly toxic and indigestible. That's why so many people cannot digest lactose now because it's not even a food anymore once pasteurized. All this can be looked up and proven. Don't be so quick to believe everything you hear or read. Do your own deep research. Ask questions.

As shown by the video, not all humans. Europeans, Asians, Africans, every culture that has cows (and other milking animals) available, have developed lasting lactose tolerance. Evolution. With your logic, everything humans do with their food that other species don't do should sicken us all: cooking, preserving, drying, smoking, fermenting, distilling, etc. Of course, ultra-processing does sicken us all, but in comparison to any animal, making tamales, tofu or olive oil is ultra processing.

I was surprised to not even hear a mention of lactase pills/tablets. It is a solution that works for a lot of people. There are even icecream shops that sell individual lactase tablets, allowing you to enjoy a dessert worryfree with just a 25 cent tablet! There are also lactosefree milch and dairy products. They simply add lactase to the milk for you. I am really suprised this was not even mentioned given the depth of information and other potential solutions like replacing gut microbes with the non-gassy type.

Even better would be not consuming cow's milk at all, but that can be difficult since it is sadly it is forced into vast majority of products. What you mention is basically a huge capitalist scam: selling a product humans don't need (dairy) that makes them sick and then conveniently selling a pharmaceutical product.

Would be interested in a video about casein in dairy and the inflammation it causes in some people.

I don't feel particularly bad when I consume dairy on a regular day. When Aunt Flo comes around I avoid it like the plague! Milk will literally incapacitate me and leave me in the fetal position from all the horrendous cramping. I almost passed out the last time I had milk during my period it was so terrible! We buy Lactaid milk. Which is supposed to be lactose free, so there's something else in milk that causes that reaction I don't know about.

So mammals are supposed to give up milk when they grow up ....who knew. There is no such thing as lactose intolerance, you're just not a baby cow.

You are absolutely right. We are adults and adults are not meant to drink breastmilk. And milk was never good for you. It’s one of the top across the world lies of our age. For calcium we were meant to consume green leafy vegetables and legumes, but we hardly eat any today.

I just found your channel and I love it! I was wondering if you could address dairy allergy? I am (anaphylactic) allergic to the protein casein in dairy. I'd really like to know more about that if possible. Thank you!
