I did almost my entire training block in the Speed 3s and LOVED THEM so much I ended up running my first marathon in them. Unfortunately I had to retire them today after 400mi and this review helped me to decide to give the 4s a try. Especially the traction

Excited to try this one out. I kind of dig the aggressive new visual design, too. All angular like a modern fighter jet. Almost silly. But just pulls it off.

Great comparison. I have been training for my first marathon primarily in the Speed 3 and have loved them. I need a new pair for the marathon and was hoping to get the Speed 4 before, but it's released 3 days after my race =[. I do like how you felt the Speed 4 had more traction; I don't feel 100% confident running in the Speed 3 when it's wet out. Thanks for the comparison.

@@chimpas88 my marathon is this Sunday. I’ll likely run in the Puma Deviate Nitro 2 since they are more fresh. My Speed 3 have over 400 miles and don’t feel the same. I did a half in my Speed 3 and loved them. I love Saucony so will likely get the Speed 4 and make that one my main.

Great seeing the comparison and another solid review David. I also got the same creasing in the same spot with the 3 and felt the same that it was more daily trainer like. Was hoping for more speed from the speed. Seems the 4 may have that back? Currently the magic speed 3 has taken the speed a lot for me. Can’t compare carbon to nylon, but do you feel the speed 4 can work as a tempo speed shoe again?

I bought 2 more pair of the Speed 3s at 126. Now I can wait for the long term verdict on the Speed 4. I've heard some say it's more narrow at the mid-foot, and is a touch softer than the Speed 3. Time will tell. I do like the look of that forefoot traction, though I've never had issue with the traction in the 3.

I got a nitpic so small I wouldn't mention it other than it might cause a bigger issue in a future video for you if it's not something you're aware of: try to find the setting for "White Balance" and change it to fixed from automatic. Probably not noticeable to a lot of folks, but waving the shoes around confused the camera and caused it to be constantly adjusting the color grading. If you want to take it a step further, you can hold up a white sheet of paper in front of the camera and adjust it so that it's white and then set it to fixed. As long as the lighting doesn't change for the rest of the video, your color balance will be good and it won't constantly be flipping around.

I know you rated the Adidas Boston 12 and the Topo Cyclone 2 as the most versatile shoes you tested in 2023. I have both and love them for that very same reason. I skipped the Speed 3 because I have the Speed 2 and prefer its firmer midsole even though the wider fit of the Speed 3 is better for me. I would love to hear your analysis on how the Speed 4 compares to the Speed 2 and the Boston 12.

Yeah, the other reviewer from Doctors of Running said he thought the Speed 4 fell in between the 2 and the 3. Keeps most of the stability of the 3, with some of the speed from the 2 returning. I'm definitely encouraged by most early reviews of the 4s.

Puma are poised to topple Saucony. Door is now open. The Puma nitro foams have six variations. They have been incrementally honing in on on the responsiveness as the durability is there. 2024 now hangs on the Deviate Nitro 3 and Deviate Nitro Elite 3 launches. The latter should get boosted to 40mm stack at the rear with a foam modification too… Photos of the prototypes suggest the change may be similar to the change we saw with the Saucony Pro 2 to the Pro 3. Let’s see!?

I'm halfway through the life of the 3 ,put 300 miles into the 2 ,I'm using it for long runs so will be buying the 3s again this year cause this update is minimal ,the grip isn't amazing on the 3 but it's not a game changer and I'd rather spend £50 -£70 less, it always disappoints me how you reviewers always recommend the new shoes but don't take into consideration that last years model is cheaper ,gives the impression you're being paid although you all deny it ,must be nice getting sent free shoes but I prefer realism and honesty which ,is this new version is almost identical and more expensive

Speed 1/2 were great shoes, so much so that Saucony nerfed the performance in Speed 3. I do have 1/2/3 and personally I don't get the bounce and fun ride in Speed 3. It is just a good daily trainer now. Yet, unlike daily trainers, the outsole rubber is not durable enough especially the heel area. It is OK to have thinner rubber on forefoot as the forces are spread on wider surface but heel get much worse impact forces and less surface to dissipate it meaning quicker erosion. PUMA Deviate Nitro 2 got this right. It is still a great shoe but has the proper rubber coverage to last long. I still have 2 pairs of Speed 2 in box plus a low mileage Speed 3. I will be passing Speed 4.

I’ve run in all of them but while I liked that v3 midsole was slightly wider, I struggled midfoot landing in it and it was too soft and lacked the pop and noticeable speed roll of v1 and to a lesser degree 2. Runs in v3 felt like a slog and the mushy midsole aggravated my hip flexors. I tend to choose shoes with more cushion in the forefoot and 8mm drops and am wondering if I should try the endorphin pro instead or perhaps the Rebel4 (now that is a 6mm drop). I can’t afford to spend more than $250 so the Speeds were a great value for a Peba shoe. I don’t like when the forefoot of a shoe bottoms out. Should I stick w v4 or try the Pro or something else. Supercomp trainer 3 comes I fear will be too soft again and it doesn’t come out til second half of the year and I need a spring shoe now. Thx

I love the ES3. They are so energetic and just roll. It feels mire minimal but they keep always a smile on your face. I wouldn’t say it’s the best trainer. But it’s the most fun shoe. The ES4 is softer and feels bulky and dead in comparison. It’s way more shoe und is good for workouts. It’s probably faster But it’s not fun. And for a trainer they are to expensive. Better get the Boston 12.

Saucony's existing XT-900 outsole rubber formulation simply cannot match the gripping power of Pumagrip, Asicsgrip, Continental or Vibram rubber formulations in wet conditions. Increasing the quantity of the same XT-900 rubber on the outsoles may help just a little bit, but also increases the overall weight of the shoes and ultimately still cannot match the gripping power of these rival rubber formulations. If Saucony can no longer improve the gripping power of their XT-900 outsole rubber formulation, they should stop adding more of the same rubber to new shoes and instead license their outsole rubbers from Continental or Vibram. These proprietary rubber formulations may add a bit more to the manufacturing cost, but are real positive product features that can be marketed as such. Saucony should remember that weather is not perfect all the time and runners may prioritize safety in wet conditions.

@@OmniZen8118 Exactly. Where I live, the roads are almost permanently wet from September to at least March. A lot of my shoes automatically get sidelined because of it. At the moment I'm either in the Puma Deviate 2/Velocity 2, or the New Balance More v4 permafrost (which has grip as good as puma grip).

Do you think the more pronounced heel flare on the Speed 4 has a significant impact on ride and/or foot strike compared to the 3s? For context, I ran through three pairs of the Speed 3s, each getting about 400 miles and never had any issues. In May 2024 I switched to the Novablast 4s, a large departure for me and after 250 miles I've developed some anterior tibial pain that has sidelined me. I know heel flare can be one factor in developing shin pain. I'm worried that the huge sole flare on the NBs has been a culprit and I'm wishing I would have just gotten another pair of the Speed 3s. As I consider getting a new pair, I'm just curious if the flare on the Speed 4 is gonna be an issue.

My speed 3 runshield aggravated my one big toe with bone spurs, most notably on my first run, a six mile easy run. I figured out how to run in them and put 500 miles on them, but a couple months after I retired them, I did a two 1/2 mile walk in them and felt it in the big toe. I had no issues in speed 2. I don't know if the cause was the stiffer runshield upper irritating the toe, or something in the wider midsole versus the speed 2. Any thoughts on whether the speed 4 changes will cause the same issues as the speed 3, particularly with normal upper?
