Here's a study showing that in patients with sleep apnea and nighttime urination, 79% of awakenings at night were due to obstructed breathing, rather than from a distended bladder. jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/article-abstract/621682.

I have sleep apnea and also have nighttime urination. Is it possible that my bladder is more susceptible to being irritated by what I eat and drink? I'm asking, if my bladder can be irritated by foods and drink because of sleep apnea?
@222Lightning
@222Lightning Жыл бұрын
@@Curtis_George I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure I came to understand from a Dr. Berg video that "what and when" you eat can affect your insulin at night and an insulin problem can cause or make Sleep Apnea worse. Eating too much salty foods or alcohol irritates the bladder. I like beer a lot....I definitely notice that if I drink 2-3 beers even if its in the first half of the day...my Nocturia is worse that night. I'd recommend trying to make your dinner a spinach salad w Garbanzo beans (my new favorite) or pan fried broccoli w olive oil. You will definitely feel that your bladder feels good and not get up at night as much. I'm not telling you to go vegan... I personally can't do this.....just go vegan for dinner. Try it.....see if it it makes a difference. Also try not to eat or drink 2-3 hours before bed...and not snack in the middle of the night. Eat enough also.........regardless if you skip breakfast or not. I usually skip breakfast myself. If you have obstructive sleep apnea....your solution is getting diagnosed then get one of those machines I would think. Drink lemon water also. This definitely good for the bladder.

A couple of years ago I went to a sleep clinic and had an overnight test. I had sleep apnea. They recommended a C-pap machine. THE first night I noticed that I only got up once or twice a night to pee. No one at the clinic mentioned that this may happen. I had been getting up 4-6 times a night. It was a nice surprise, and SO noticeable that I immediately recognized the connection. I then asked my doctor and he said that, yes, there is a connection.

Thank you Dr Park. I'm a retired but active, 75 year old New Zealander and have been having nocturia for about 10 years. I have had high blood pressure for about 18 years, but I have been listed as marginal all my adult life. Bedtime is usually 10.30-11pm and I wake for a full pee around 12.30pm. I then wake 90 minutes later at 2.00am for an extra dribble. The next one is usually at 4am and a final one at 6.00am, both of these are annoying dribbles that keep you half-awake if you don't see to it. I have slept right through on occasions when I have had a hard day's exercise and/or a super comfortable bed at a hotel/motel. But sleep apnea seems a high probability. Thank you.

I was diagnosed with BPH at an early age. Despite that, I continued drinking large amounts of caffeine throughout the day. This, in turn, caused frequent urination during the night. Most nights, I would have to get up five times to urinate. I made a switch to drinking one cup of coffee in the morning, followed by one cup of matcha tea. After that, I only drink water. In addition, I keep a bottle of water on my nightstand. Since making the change, I rarely get up to urinate at night. If I do, it is only once and I fall right back to sleep. It has been life-changing.

Not knowing that my sleep apnea had any correlation to my frequent washroom breaks at night but after watching this video, it made me realize ever since I started using the cpap machine those washroom breaks at night had stopped completely where now when I need to urinate, its only once after a nights rest and woke ready to start my day.

Many of the problems it causes are in the list you gave us. Please add coeliac disease to your list and encourage people to get tested before serious damage is done. I was sixty two and unable to digest anything properly before I found a diagnostic program that gave me possible things to test for, yet for years I had been visiting my GP with gastric problems and worsening symtoms, high blood pressure heart palpitations alongside weakness and tiredness. The tendency is to treat one symptom instead of looking for an underlying cause. I was told for years that I had irritable bowel syndrome. This is not a diagnosis but a description of what was happening to me from an irritant that ruined my life.

After several visits to my doctors and specialists over the past 10 years or so I have come to the conclusion I just don't care any more. I am going to go out as I want to enjoying what I want to and if she don't like it tough luck. If I need to go twice a night so be it. If I got to go more that means my bladder is working. Vivian, just because you tried a mandibular advancement device doesn't mean that your urination is not a sleep apnea problem. Oftentimes, I see complete obstruction in the airway with the oral device in place. I find that in many cases, it's not pushed forward enough. The problem is that you get more complications the further out you push. This issues has to be managed properly by your dentist. Another option is to try other sleep apnea treatment alternatives. @@doctorstevenpark Thanks. I had a leaky heart valve, which I reckon was caused by Sleep Apnea in the first place, so it all goes round in circles, I suppose. My father too suffered from Sleep Apnea and had to sleep with a mask next to a machine of some kind. Unfortunately it only worsened his condition in the long run. I avoided that thanks to emplolying the Butayko Method for breathing etc., particularly the principle of taping one's mouth over with surgical tape at night. If you are not aware of this solution to Sleep Apnea, I will strongly encourage you to look into it. Some medical professionals have their doubts about it (though Butayko, who invented it, was in fact a high-ranking doctor himself), and one night when I was at hospital there was a nurse who woke me up and told me to remove the tape. Luckily for me, she had a young doctor with her, who said, "No, no, no, this is a great thing to do." He had some personal, very positive experience with the method and even tossed me a roll of surgical tape when he left (the nurse had to accept his decition, of course). I still mouthtape at night, but I do have a small worry in regard to the glue on the tape and whether it might be somewhat toxid, as you place it across the lips. I know there are dedicated tapes made for this specific purpose, but I can't find the brands around where I live (South West Ireland), and the sellers I found on German Amazon, who stock them, won't post out of their own country, and buying from amazon.co.uk. isn't worth the trouble since Brexit. To cut a long story short, I wonder if you might have a comment on the subject of the possible toxidity of the tape.

Check this out... The main reason is most of us 40 or older guys take night time pills and if you're like me and don't like to feel my pills coming up i drink a full glass of water and yes it wakes me up a couple hours later. I hate when doctors think they know everything and then think You Tube is so creditable that they make videos. I'm just a lowly Engineer with a masters in Mechanical and Robotic Engineering from Stanford, and have to double check and correct my VA doctors so frequently specially on medication prescribing i should be working there. I think sleep apnea is a bad thing, but i think hooking someone up to a machine that, is a germ cooker and as recently shown could cause cancer or makes you have nightmares because you face is being smothered in a grip or bunging cords and plastic. doesn't make sleep any better, just worse.

I just have a tendency to drink most of my water towards the end of the day. I usually sip coffee up until my first meal around noon. I don't mind waking up several times to go to the bathroom. And I always allocate 9+ hours for bedtime which means I easily get 8+ hours of sleep. I feel great and I'm not overweight.

A few years ago I started going to the toilet a lot, it started to get up to 5-6 times a night, this was during the covid times, so going to a doctor was a bit out of the question. So I did a lot of reading on what the causes could be. I did read that one of the causes could be artificial sweeteners, which I had started taking a year or 2 before, to help with weight loss. So I stopped useing artificial sweeteners, and went back to sugar, now I maybe go once a night, some nights I can sleep for 8 full hours.

@@HARSHDHV1 I did not say that, it was not a cause. All I did was, say what caused mine. The reason I made the comment, is that he made sound as if it was the only reason, and not one of them. But remeber artificial sweeters are added to food and drinks, so it's not just a case of what you use. Take diet drinks they contain artificial sweeters, some foods do as well just to cut the calorie count, which is why I now check the ingredients of processed food.

I haven't had ANY artificial sweeteners in at least 7 years...and I still get up 4-6 times a night :-( Plus, many doctors say sugar is the actual cause of frequent nighttime urination. Having said that, if what you're doing works for you that's all that matters.
@maximushaughton2404

@@Person-mh6xq I was not trying to say that it was the answer, it was just the answer for me. For me I started to notice the problem during the lockdowns in the UK, so had no chance of seeing a doctor, so I did a lot of reading on the matter. And yes there are a lot of things that can cause the problem. So thought about what had I changed in my lifestyle, that couuld cause it, caffiene is one, I had reduced my caffeine intake any way. But I had started to use artificial sweeteners, which is one of the many causes, I had started to use them to help with weight loss. So I stopped using them and also looked at foods that contain artificial sweeteners, and yes it worked for me. I posted the 1st time just to say that there are other reasons, one's that may not cost as much, as going for a medical treatment would cost. To me it sounded like an advert.

I take zinc and copper along with iodine and selenium. The zinc helps my prostrate. The iodine and selenium help my thyroid. The thyroid controls all glands. Prostrate, bladder, liver, pancreas, sweat glands, breasts all are operate correctly when you keep enough iodine in your system. I sleep much sounder and my capacity has doubled and am not in great pain when full I can sleep 7 or 8 hours without a trip to the bathroom. One other common reason for swollen legs is heart failure. When this happens, the heart gets stretched due to too much blood volume and for the same reason as what happens in apneas, the hormone atrial natriuretic hormone (ANP) is released from the heart and goes to the kidneys to make more urine.

This is shocking information for me, but it may prove to be a lifesaver. I never considered sleep apnea as a possible problem. My condition has grown worse over the last ten years. I am fighting very high blood pressure that has been as high as 210/120, even though my cholesterol is 175. I have been a type 2 diabetic, but I am now off Metformin because of a healthy diet. And, on a typical day, I only pee two or three times, but many as TWELVE TIMES at night, two or three times before 3am, and then about every 15 minutes to half an hour afterward. I have been going to a urologist for a year and have been thoroughly tested. He suspects it is my prostate, but it is not especially large, and my PSA is very low. Digital examination shows no lumps. I've been on several antibiotics with no success. The urologist says the only thing he knows to do for me is the TURP surgery on my prostate. Your video makes so much sense. OMG! My memory is suffering, I'm unstable on my feet during the day, and so tired most days but cannot sleep if I try to nap. I've also had a couple of severe bouts of anxiety in my life. Thank you Doctor Park! I've watch a great many KZbin videos on this topic and yours was unique and very well done!

I had copd and ended up catching the influenza flu and caught pneumonia, was in ICU for 7 days fighting for my life, was at 150 pounds and now I'm at 178. After getting out of the hospital I then had a motorcycle accident and that's when I started having problems. I also started having leg cramps. Now I'm taking magnesium glycinate for the cramps and started eating Brazil nuts. I eat cabbage with potatoes, onions and beef sausage with tomatoes and olive oil for dinner. I eat good but for some reason I started having a problem. Any help I sure would appreciate, I will start getting more sun, eat earlier like you mentioned in this video and lose some weight if you feel I should.
