I'm not the biggest fan of David's Doctor, but 11 was a step down from that. The stuff beneath his somewhat grating antics doesn't get explored very well, in my eyes, and that leaves his comedy to carry most of the main role and it's simply not up to the task, and when we do see his sadness it's so flatly done it doesn't leave any impact. We only get really brief moments where the script wants us to focus on the nuances of 11 the character and that's not really enough.

I tried everything I could to justify living, to be better. Constantly reminding myself of every transgression so I didn't repeat it. Shame and guilt were the things I used to prove maybe I had some hope of being a good person. I genuinely believed those two feelings were the only good things left in me. Now though, things have changed, a bit like the number of people on Gallifrey I haven't fully forgotten my mistakes. But I no longer see as much point in fixating on them. I'm not proud of who I was, I'm deeply ashamed of so much of myself back then. But for all my faults back then I am glad for one thing. I was still able to see where I was wrong. I recognized that I needed to be better and choose to try. So, to my old self I say this, good job.

Agree about the music selection being poignant & has you already feeling the emotion of him leaving before he even began to change. Especially as we knew to expect him to immerge with an entirely different personality and new face. That was a really great episode, a terrific child actor. But the speach about the power of possibilities a single life possesses, is so true & powerful. Plus, 11's speaches were always well delivered, & able to evoke a lot of emotion when hearing them. Even years later, especially this episode & the Rings of Akhaten.

Love how the Eleventh Doctor knows he's dying throughout this scene and is really trying to put on a brave face for Clara, but there's this deep sadness to his last speech, because, while perhaps not as vain and egoistic as Ten, he's still really sad to be leaving. I think Matt might be the greatest actor ever to play the Doctor and this scene breaks my heart every single time.

To be fair, the Tenth Doctor lasted for what, like five years of their life? Meanwhile, by FAR the longest portion of their life was spent as the Eleventh (he was 907 when he first regenerated, and was nearing 2000 in this scene). That’s over half their lifetime. Eleven had a whole lot more time to actually LIVE, and spent much of that doing easily the most impactful things of the Doctor’s entire life (Big Bang 2, stopping the Silence, and of course being the first incarnation of the Doctor to actually REMEMBER what they actually did to Gallifrey, all come to mind). And then, to top it off, he still spent the vast majority of those ~1100 years growing old on Trenzalore before finally kicking the bucket. Eleven did a TON of stuff, got really old, and fully expected to die in that little village. Not surprising that he welcomed his regeneration somewhat.

Anonymous Gamer agreed. Personally I hate Tenant’s (not for lack of acting he did great). Hated how his first episode, and the character in general, is all about how despite regenerating he is the same person just with a new look. Had to talk Rose down when he changed and tell her how regeneration is nothing and it’s still him with a new face. But then at the end of his time he just blathers on about how he doesn’t want to go and acts like regeneration means he ceases to exist and is the complete opposite of what he had put forward. Loved how with 11 he calmly accepted it and talked about remembering his past and who he was and that he’ll always be the Doctor. It had the refined dignity that I would expect from the character and not childish blathering.

I'm amazed at how well thought through this is. It's very powerful to see the cut to little Amy running up the stairs, and to see how the entire inside of the Tardis is plastered with her childhood artwork to show how her presence still fills the Tardis. And it's all still there when she walks down the stairs to him with her black fingernails and wedding ring. He hasn't seen her in hundreds of years, maybe even much longer. But it's the fact that she's the only companion he remembers that's so very telling. There's a longing that shows how strongly he was attached to her. And then he drops his bow tie, releasing his identity as is supposed to happen when one is reincarnated. And, of course, his instantaneous transformation into the 12th Doctor coupled with the look in Clara's eyes gives the impression that he's transformed into something terrible like a giant insect. At least to her. And the fact that he says he'll never forget a single thing but then after the transformation asks her if she, "happens to know how to fly this thing," is hilarious. And there's so much more. The interplay between the Doctor and Clara, his speeches, the fact that Clara doesn't know who Amy is. It's amazing how much information is compressed into this short video segment, and how much it communicates. The 10th Doctor's regeneration was very powerful, but in many ways, this is much more moving. It really is a brilliant piece of work.

Matt Smith, My Doctor. I was first introduced to Doctor Who while flipping through channels. I landed on a certain scene, a scene involving a man riding up the side of a building on a motorcycle. Then the man caught my attention, his style, his flair, his energy. I realized Doctor Who might not have been the boring show I thought it was. I heard there was a 50th anniversary coming so I binged ALL of NuWho. Eccleston drove the show forward, holding the story and showing the Doctor's power. Next was Tennant who was a Compassionate Doctor, he cared for the ones he loved and inspired all around him and I was sad when he left but also excited. Finally some context to the eccentric man on a motorcycle. I saw Matt as a badass so I waited for him to do something really cool, then he ate Fish Fingers and Custard and was immediately my favorite. 11 was truly a kind and pure soul, corrupted by loss and sorrow. Smith could tug on my heartstrings or make me crack up at the drop of a hat. I watched as he recreated the universe, as he defied a locked moment in time. Then Time of the Doctor came out, I shut myself out of all Doctor Who related media so I had no idea he was leaving. When the end came I was absolutely shattered, as he destroyed a Dalek ship. Then it cut to this scene and Smith was still there I was so hopeful. Then he started talking, explaining everything and I shattered all over again. All throughout I was hoping, PRAYING Matt's time wasn't up. What finally made me realize it was over was the bow tie. He untied it and I almost yelled at him to put it back on. And then it happened, and for a long time Capaldi was simply the old man that stole my doctor. I eventually gew to love Capaldi. But to me, nobody will ever match The Raggedy Man Eccleston was a Warrior Tennant was a Protector Capaldi was a Beloved Madman But Matt Smith, The 11th Doctor, The Raggedy Man... Will always be MY doctor. Thank you Matt for the emotions you gave me. And I promise, I SWEAR to you... I will always remember, when the doctor was you. Raggedy Man... Goodnight.

I love the musical motifs in this theme. It has motifs from many episodes, including from “The Long Song”, one of my all time favorite compositions from all of DW. I like to think that it’s the Doctor remembering all the times he had. The dropping of the bowtie to signal the end of 12 was very powerful to me too. He’d finally accepted that change was inevitable, and embraced it.

Not to mention the brass section when Amy walks down really evokes "I Am The Doctor" and the other bombastic themes of series 5 and 6. It really is a perfect musical sendoff. Murray Gold is fucking brilliant man. Shame that he left, but all good things must come to an end.

I just finished watching The Time of The Doctor (w/c was the 11th Doctor's regeneration episode) and I decided to watch it about 10:50 PM. When the regeneration scene started (all the conversations and whatnot) it was already 11:59, and that EXACT moment when Peter Capaldi's face showed up, the clock changed into 12:00 AM. Eleven's Hour is over now. The clock is striking Twelve.

Used this speech for my yearbook quote. "We all change... When you think about it, we're all different people, all through our lives... and that's okay, that's good, you've gotta keep moving, so long as you remember all the people you used to be." Incredibly poignant... Matt always had the best monologues. I have yet to see much of Capaldi as they pulled the show from US Netflix before I could finish his season, but I hope he was able to fill Matt's shoes and bring as much life and depth to the character as Matt did.

I always feel like the doctor's final words are a moment of breaking the fourth wall. It's not just the doctor saying goodbye, it's the actor saying it as well. Well, this regeneration thing and the Doctor's final speech only exists because the first Doctor wanted so much to continue doing the show, but for health issues he had to go, then the concept of the Doctor regenarating was introduced, as well as every incarnation having a touching final speech to have a proper farewell, so I think you're right ;) !

“When you think about it we’re all different people, all through our lives. That’s okey, that’s good. you gotta keep moving, as long as you remember all the people that you used to be.” So true and wise and I would never have thought it. Moffat has this gift for taking something obvious or simple and making it seem fresh and meaningful. It’s like there’s a perception filter around the world and he’s immune to it. We see a world of old statues and cracked walls, he sees a lot more. Moffat gets a lot of hate for not being perfect constantly. but you can’t deny he is fantastic, absolutely fantastic. His biggest flaw I think, is that he knows how good he is. He’s one of/if not, the biggest Moffat fan ever. Which can sometimes make his stuff a bit too self referential, self indulgent or repetitive.

I think this is the most beautiful regeneration we've seen so far, there isn't the aloof humour of the 9ths, nor the tragic payoff of the 10ths, what we have instead is the remiss remarks and solemn satisfaction of someone who sadly admits their time is up, but acknowledges how bright they shined while they could

I just connected to him as a kid and i would watch his seasons over and over again. He always made me feel safe and happy. I never actually watched this regeneration scene until about 2 years ago, so when i finally had to say goodbye to him it felt like saying goobye to my childhood. Which makes his message about change even more profound for me. He was and still is my comfort character and whenever im feeling down i just watch his seasons. Thank you Matt Smith for creating a beautiful and heart felt character that we all cared so deeply for. Im gonna go watch this scene again and cry.

I've kinda noticed something. In the 'new' Who, whenever the Doctor regenerates it always feels like the actor is talking rather than the actual Doctor. For example: Christopher Eccleston: you were fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. And you know what? So was I! David Tennant: I don't wanna go Matt Smith: I will always remember when the Doctor was me. I wonder if they'll do the same with Capaldi...

This regeneration perfectly encapsulates Matt Smith's Doctor's personality, as does David Tennant's regeneration. 10th: Loved life - loved every second of it. So much so, he never wanted it to end. 11th: Loved life - loved every second of it. So much so, he was happy where it ended. 11 was much more optimistic I'd say. Both of them were high energy and optimistic, but 11 was more... Willing to roll with it. 10 seemed to cling on to the preferred outcome a little more. He was more determined to have it his way - 11 was determined, but when everything went awry, he always seemed to bounce back and say "Alright so that failed, not my preferred outcome but oh well."
@SAMAKUS4 жыл бұрын
I also think the fact that 11 was expecting to die influenced his outlook as well. 10 just wasn’t ready for the end. With 11s regeneration, it’s as if he’s younger again.
@D23-884 жыл бұрын
I feel that 10 really suffered through his timeline and I think he wasn't ready for it to end because no matter how much he tried to help, it would always end badly for him. He always wanted to do a little bit more to get it right. Like he tried to help any way he could and he ended up losing Rose to another dimension, Donna had her memory wiped of him, he lost madame pompadour after running to the Tardis for a few seconds, the lady he saved on Mars killed herself and then to still put his life on the line to save wilf after already losing so much. David's portrayal is my favourite. Its harsh at times and doesn't gloss over the tough times he had. 10's regeneration to 11 was my favourite Doctor Who scene, powerful and emotional scene. I cant complain about Matts portrayal though, he did a fantastic job.
@precisionaim59544 жыл бұрын
Ten's regeneration is sadder than most people think because he only lasted a few years, while Eleven lasted a thousand. Ten's life was way too short and Eleven had way more adventures behind the scenes. Eleven was so accepting because he got really lucky and lived extremely long. He lived so long that his previous 10 incarnations COMBINED couldn't beat his lifespan. This is why Ten was hesitant to go and Eleven was very accepting.
@idealicfool4 жыл бұрын
I'd say yes and no. That scene in day of the doctor when 1 of the doctors asks how many children were on Gallifrey, 10 says the number, but 11 says he forgets. There is a lot of emotional turmoil in 11 for the things that were completley out of his hands that he puts on the goofy childish persona to cover the sad and despairing old man that is just beneath the surface.
