Now these are proper Cybermen! Eerie, creepy, un-settling, and vaguely humanoid but in a grotesque machine-like way. Their more zombie-slow like movements make it more apparent that there is something living inside those suits, and their dead emotion-less faces always make them an un-predictable presence. You aren't always sure what they're going to do, but you still don't want to be anywhere near them. Also, the music in this scene: absolute perfection. The classic era really did have some stand-out soundtracks, and this is clearly one of them.

Honestly I started watching the modern/revived series and just never felt anything threatening or scary from the modern cybermen. I mean at that point I had seen a billion other killer robot movies. I got that they were iconic but that’s it. It wasn’t until Capaldi kept bringing up the Mondasian cybermen and Moffat gave him a storyline with them as his goodbye present that I realized how much better the earliest versions of the cybermen were. Then I looked at all the different versions and they really got gradually more generic robots (except for that one midpoint where they sounded and looked nearly completely human) as time went on.

This list is as follows: Galaxy 4 (1) The Daleks' Master Plan (1, 3 & 4) The Savages (4) The Tenth Planet (4) The Power of the Daleks (1 & 5) The Highlanders (1) The Macra Terror (2) The Evil of the Daleks (7) The Abominable Snowmen (4) Fury from the Deep (2, 4-6) The Wheel in Space (1) If these could be recovered, it would take the number of missing episodes down to 80. Regardless of anyone's opinion about the story, you cannot help but be impressed by the production values of "Tomb of the Cybermen." Especially this scene with the Cybermen coming out of the tombs. When I first seen it back in 1992 on TV not long after the episodes were found, I expected the show would be frugal with the production. Aside from a few flaws (ex: when the Cyber Controller's head almost came off after he was slammed against a control board), it looks high budget for its time.

Robert Lythgoe Weren't the Mondas Cybermen the ones that appeared in Nightmare in Silver and Dark Water? Either way, I definitely agree that the Cybermen should go back to at the very least an updated version of the Invasion design or maybe even one of these or the Tenth Planet models, the new Iron-Man duplicates simply aren't scary whatsoever.

iHuzza I mostly meant the Tenth Planet versions with that comment.

Robert Lythgoe I think that while they'd be really good in terms of the fear effect, thoe Cybermen were very easily defeated, they'd have the Gold weakness of the future Cybermen alongside all of that Radiation weakness that they'd had. Personally, while it's not as scary, I'd go with an updated version of the Invasion models as they are still sort of creepy, however don't come with the weaknesses of their earlier counterparts.

I do like the old Cybermen for their eerie style, but I will admit I actually quite liked the Cyberiad Cybermen design in Nightmare in Silver too -- they're entirely different styles of fear factor, though. This one is meant to be unearthly and uncanny, the Cyberiad is meant to be intimidating in a kind of 'Jesus there's a lot of them, and they're all kind of indestructible' sort of way -- similar to the Dalek depiction in RTD's run.
