As a 28 year old African american man who was born and raised in Milwaukee, wi I have never experienced the historical sights of the city. I went to matc for collage and drove past the church many times. I had some curiosity about it at first and thought it was abandoned. thanks to all who had worked on restoring this historical masterpiece. What an awesome documentary.

I cried when I saw the fire on the news. I'm so glad that this beautiful amazing piece of art was able to be restored and with a sprinkler system and steel roof trusses now. Hopefully she'll stand another 500 years! I live in Milwaukee so this church means a lot to me. In an organist so the loss of that magnificent organ hit me hard as well.

Beautiful job! Very well done for a smaller community. I have been by this church and to get this much done in a short period of time is on par with the restoration of Notre Dame. They had 5,000 artisans working to get it done in just over 5 years. We have far less resources than France where there are several artists and craftsmen to work. I hope all these techniques get passed on to future generations before they are lost to time.

I am glad they are able to reconstruct this beautiful building. And restoring the beautiful chandeliers was really wonderful. I have no words to describe the beauty of the alter and how it was restored. Using the wood from the pews and the charred beams was really great and will keep some of the former building there for all times. Hats off to all of the dedicated workers, engineers, architects etc that made this possible. Amazingly beautiful. Thank you to all who made this video possible.

To behold a beloved place of worship so horribly devastated by fire and to experience its resurrection through the faith and love of its members, the community and the skilled, committed people of the trades, artists. architects, engineers and historians can only be seen and honored as acts of love.

I a way, Notre Dame de Paris has made a pathway for restoration as a real possibility. Both these churches are of the same testament. That is a real stewardship and comment of materializing their Faith and commitment to an Oath. I love how they saw every piece of the fabric as One with the Church building as Holy. That was beautiful to see. I bet the charcoal will be used for Good Friday.

What happened to the organ, was it restored? I saw a new(?) organ in the left corner just before the credits rolled.
@OrganGuyJohnКүн бұрын
The organ you see in the documentary is an “interim” instrument installed in the transept. It came from a local church that had closed. It was built in 1985 by Stephen Russel and relocated by Ryan Mueller. Many parts of the 1879 Schuelke that survived the church fire were transported to Dobson Organ Builders in Iowa who were the likely candidates to build a new instrument for Trinity. Their shop completely burned down in 2021, and all the parts of the Trinity Schuelke in storage there were lost. A portion of what survived the church fire still is in storage in Milwaukee, but not enough exists anymore for a true restoration. It would have to be a “re-creation/reconstruction.” Currently, there is no money left for the organ to be reconstructed. That being said, there is significant interest in the congregation and organ community to reconstruct the Schuelke-possibly to be more true to how it sounded and functioned originally (it had been significantly tonally and mechanically altered in the 1920’s). The congregation is willing to be patient to raise the funds for such a project, thus the importance of the interim organ in the transept.

@@OrganGuyJohn I forgot to congratulate the community with their beautifully restored church. It looks amazing. Thank you for your thourough answer. It's always sad when a historic instrument such as an organ is lost. the is a common occurrence in many of our older cities and towns, often these old churches have a congregation that is as old as the building or so it seems and they don't have the energy or resources to properly take care of the structure or rebuild it even a small disaster. These buildings were built of bricks and stone but the roof structure just like Notre Dame in Paris was wood in most cases, even if it was a wood building, it is difficult to get wood today in the dimensions used a century and a half ago. Bricklayers and stone masonry are an art that while not dead, is very much declined and those techs who do this are much in demand and expensive. It is also hard to get insurance on these old buildings and the insurance evaluation is based on replacement (a new building of similar size) not on rebuilding a historic monument. My late cousin was pastor of such a church, making it even more difficult, the building was registered as a historic landmark and even the slightest change in appearance required approval of the community's historic review board. This made everything slower and more expensive.

What a great story. I work in the film industry in Chicago and our artesian carpenters and finishers are always reproducing antique pieces like this. What was the final $ figure on the rebuild when it was all said and done? Wow I see about $26M and money well spent.

God has taken us, sinful people in a generation of death, to be His temple. He has washed us from our sin by Baptism and taken us to be His dwelling. To all who are struggling in their faith, know that this testimony of a rebuilt church building is a testimony to the way God handles His children, His own flock. He loves us, and He does not forsake us. Although His wrath is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth, He has sent His own Son to drink the cup of His wrath. Jesus, the Christ, has taken the judgment of sin, and given us His own righteousness. He will not allow His own to fall from His hand, His grip is about us. So to the one weak in faith, be encouraged by this video that God’s will is for our sanctification. And that looks a lot like this documentaries’ testimony of a rebuilt church. Just as Stephen saw the Christ at the right hand of God watching over the nations that have been put under His feet, so God watched His new creation, His church, and keeps them. He who began a work in you will bring it to completion in Christ Jesus. Amen

If this had been a Roman Catholic church, what was left would have been torn down and a new very modernist building constructed devoid of any religious beauty. This congregation did a remarkable job of preserving their heritage. Their ancestors would be very happy that what they lovingly built still stands.

I agree with you, Mr. Adams. Their architectural treasures are as pearls before swine and the harvests of their recent years of sowing show everything. Shame on them. A religious in my family (70 years professed) told me that God gave me a brain and two feet and if I saw malfeasance I was to keep my wallet closed and, if necessary, walk away. I've now done both.

Interesting comparison. Should note that in France, all churches built prior to 1905 are the property of the local municipality, and it was technically the responsibility of the government, not the Catholic Church, to fund and restore Notre Dame.
