Back in 1990, while stationed at the base in Naples, Italy, I took a weekend seminar class for my Italian Degree. It was entirely focused on the Vatican. We trained up from Naples, stayed overnight, and then early in the day went to the basilica. Toured it in incredible depth and breadth.. INCLUDING descending through the Papal grotto, and down into the Necropolis, and then eventually coming up to a space where we could look through a small window exactly at that spot where those bones are shown. I got to see that with my own eyes 34 years ago.. I am so happy others will get to at least virtually see it now. That same day we took the elevator up to the roof and then climbed stairs that wind up inside the outer surface of the dome, to the big ass cupola/observation space. Once down at ground level the instructor dismissed the class, but offered extra credit to anyone nutty enough to walk around the entire outer walls of Vatican CIty. I did so, and we had fun trying to identify from the special markers, which pope built which wall or structure. We barely made it into the Vatican Museum in time to sprint down the long halls and get into the Sistine Chapel about 15 minutes before closing. In one day I went from the deepest excavated space beneath the Vatican, to the highest point, and then all the way around the walls!

However, a place to visit that is closer to the truth of Christianity is the town of Assisi. If you're looking for a spiritual experience, go there and walk in the footsteps of St. Francis. At minute 14:10 you see a truly surprising asymmetry, right at the very core of the basilica: stone | niche | stone | stone in another colour, without a similar one on the left! Behind that structure is what remains of Peter's original tomb, which had deteriorated much until Constantine decided to build the first basilica. It has deteriorated so much that it needed to be reinforced with an extra wall on the right. And later, during persecutions, Peter's bones were relocated in this new wall, so it had to be respected when Constantine built his basilica. And it was again respected when the second basilica was built...

The interiors of the tombs still contain engraved headstones and urns with details of the people buried there and have been left mostly in place. The tomb of St Peter himself is located directly under the main altar of the Basilica. He is in the alcove in the wall where he was found, but with the section of wall that was covering him removed. You are not allowed closer than a 4-5m, but there is a small light that illuminates his resting place

As a Protestant I was brought up to believe that 'decor' distracts from prayer and faith. That said as a building it is incredible. My mother had strangely always wanted to visit Rome and the Vatican but she passed away this summer without having done so. When my sister married, instead of an exotic honeymoon, she chose to follow the path of Christ from his birthplace to his place of execution and then resurrection. I visted Rome many years ago but not long enough to visit the Basicila sadly.

Décor is not an essential part of prayer and faith. In fact, it can sometimes become a distraction or even lead to idolatry.
@brucetheloon2 ай бұрын
The concept of decor distracting from prayer and faith is an interesting outcome of the Reformation. Ostentatious display of the wealth gained by corrupt Popes, cardinals and bishops is definitely part of the driving force behind Luther and other's leading to the Reformation, but stripping the decor feels like swinging the pendulum to the other extreme. Some of the early structure of the current St Peter's was funded by the sale of indulgences, but that ceased after the Council of Trent in the mid 1500s and the great artistic works like the artwork in the dome and the Bernini art came in the early 1600s driven by the Italian Renaissance. Displaying the beauty of the art done as a celebration of God feels like a good thing to me as it is an inspiration. Something like the Michelangelo ceiling of the Sistine chapel was not done for the money, but to celebrate the story of God and humanity. Our modern materialistic interpretation may call it a priceless artwork and assign monetary value to it, but is that a valid classification of a painting intended to tell the story of God and Adam? I'm not saying churches should have gold statues and million dollar paintings, but surely something like a stained glass window telling the story of Eden or Noah or the Crucifixion can provide inspiration and a means of contemplation of God?
@TheFiown2 ай бұрын
@@brucetheloon Interesting response thank you. I grew up in a Protestant environement, our church was a hall with no indication of purpose except the lectern for the bible and a simple alter, no paintings, no stained glass. Not having seen what other religious buildings were like, I thought that this was the norm. When later in life I saw inside Catholic churches, they were so at odds that they didn't seem like places of prayer but it wasn't a critisicm in any way. I have visited many churches in different countries and they are places where I usually go to find peace in my daily life, to talk to myself, to light a candle for those I love. I have in my house many religious statues including a very large St Antoine, my favorite Saint. I have a collection of 'benitiers' over my bed and many crucifixes for their beauty. I remember going into one particular church in the town of Nimes, a rather squarish church but beautiful proportions. A lady came out of the vestry and asked me to follow her into the back rooms that were lined in paintings and filled with beautiful antique furniture and objects. She asked me to speak of my faith and I firstly apologised and told her that my faith was different to hers before speaking about how I saw faith, god and spiritual life. My faith is based on simple common sense, we do not ask pardon for sinning as to think about sinning already being a sin we should stop there and not go ahead then ask for forgiveness. I pray within myself, not in a particular place and I have total believe in a higher power, one that keeps those who believe, strong and safe. I remember many years ago a conversation with a young catholic child who asked me why the Christians in the Arena didn't just verbally renounce God to save their lives and then still go on believing, for him it made sense. I told him to hold his breath so he did but not for long then let out a gasp and asked me what that had to do with faith. I told him that for those who 'believe', then breathing like faith is not something you can choose to stop, it is the life force of your being. I lost my mum this summer and buried her with my little brothers ashes in her arms on top of my little sisters coffin, in a beautiful little village cemetry against a wall in the sun. My dad is not far from them and for me they are all safe and alive in my heart. I don't generally talk about my beliefs as everyone has their own and the path has to be found through life, through struggle, sometimes through loss and pain but once found it heals. Life is loss married to love, both must go hand in hand to make sense. God bless X

Hi Manuel. When I was younger, I traveled to Rome, as part of a European Trip. I went to the Vatican, attended mass in the chapel area behind the main altar. After that mass, we took the elevator up to the inner staircase that leads up the Cupola. I climbed the spiral stairs up the inside of the Cupola and to the very top, where one can stand on a very small area, looking out over the Vatican Gardens. I could not believe just how large the statues along the front of the Basilica were. Back then, I guess security was not as tight as it must be today (there). I also remember touring the Grotto beneath the main altar, where St. Peter is interred. Pope John Paul II was still Pope. Years later JP II came to Miami on a pilgrimage, and it rained cats, dogs, and little fishes. We stayed up all night long waiting on the Papal Mass with JP II. It was a total wash out. The Cross that sat on the site where the Papal Mass was to take place, is now sitting on the grounds of the Diocesan Offices of the Church in North Miami. I have a photo of the Pieta on my bookcase that I snapped way back when.

The Vatican people were wise to invite Manuel to do a video on the Tomb of St. Peter. When you are standing before the Confessio, there are two flame burning. One represents the location of the tomb, the other the location of Peter's bones. Speculation is that the bones were removed from the tomb and hidden in a niche in the nearby wall to prevent their looting during the barbarian invasions. The pallia worn by Metropolitan archbishops are woven by the nuns at Santa Cecilia in Trastevere. The Pope bestows them during the Solemnity of St. Peter and Paul on June 29. The video shows a peribolos corridor which leads to several chapels and the tomb of Pope Pius XII. Manuel refers to Peter as an apostle. He certainly was, but that understates his importance. He is the Prince of the Apostles, the foremost apostle, as well as the first Pope. Manuel is to be congratulated for another superb video!!

High-resolution photography overlaid over LiDAR-generated 3D point cloud data is not "AI." It's amazing technology, to be sure, and the virtual models of St. Peter's are absolutely a cultural treasure worth celebrating, but photogrammetry algorithms aren't "AI" in the sense that the general public understands the term. Microsoft's insistence on you using the acronym in every other paragraph really diminishes the perceived value of what is genuinely a rather remarkable achievement. The AI marketing jargon has seriously jumped the shark, to the point that it's become off-putting. Still and all, it's very cool to be able to see inside one of the world's largest religions' most sacred building, so thank you for sharing this video. Here's some engagement for the algorithm.

100% agree. The video was well edited and the technology on display very impressive but it was so blatantly obvious how this entire video was just one big ad heavily overseen by Microsoft. Displaying technology is fine but the incessant use of "AI powered this" or "AI enhanced that" just shows how much of the script was written by Microsofts marketing team to promote their product rather than a genuine unbiased authentic display/analysis of the technology or just the Basilica in general. It sadly turns a unique video displaying a novel new technology into just another modern era technology marketing ad fit with all the jargon big tech companies view was most engaging to the average consumer.

Also, it is something I can show my family until I can get them there in person!

I was there in October and got to celebrate mass in front of the tomb of St. Peter. What an incredible experience. By far the most amazing and beautiful building I’ve ever seen.

Wow thanks for showing us around & the sponsorship was well worth it. This is now more accessible to many. Just stunning the mind of the artists in reverance to the sublime sacred force. These experiences strengthen our faith in the kind, compassionate, merciful and empathetic divine spirit of life. Watching from Sydney.

What a great tour. Your usual high-quality production was a pleasant way to spend 16 minutes. I am not a Catholic. However, I found this the most fascinating of videos. To think, if those remains are really that of St Peter, you were in touching distance from the man who walked with Jesus, talked with Jesus and denied Jesus. I felt an unusual feeling in my heart when you said it could be him. It was indescribable, I felt moved.

“It is recorded that Paul was beheaded in Rome itself, and Peter, likewise, was crucified, during the reign [of the Emperor Nero]. The account is confirmed by the names of Peter and Paul over the cemeteries there, which remain to the present time. And it is confirmed also by a stalwart man of the Church, Gaius by name, who lived in the time of Zephyrinus, bishop of Rome. This Gaius, in a written disputation with Proclus, the leader of the sect of Cataphrygians, says this of the places in which the remains of the aforementioned apostles were deposited: ‘I can point out the trophies(relics) of the apostles. For if you are willing to go to the Vatican or to the Ostian Way, you will find the trophies of those who founded this Church."- St. Gaius (Disputation with Proclus [A.D. 198] in Eusebius, Church History 2:25:5).

Excellent presentation. My family and I experienced the guided tour of St. Peter's remains in 2015. I will never forget seeing his bones in the niche that is open for viewing. The story of how Vatican archeologists determined those remains to be Peter's is a great story itself.

Thank you for a wonderful video, Mr. Bravo! If you go to St. Peter’s, the Scavi Tour is not to be missed. They will take you down to the ancient necropolis and you can see the Trophy of Gaius for yourself. There, you can see the box containing the bones of St. Peter! When I was there recently, Mass with the Pope was going on in the Basilica above. We could hear the choir and the organ playing and see the cardinals passing by through the ventilation vents above our heads, as they walked to the main altar directly above St. Peter’s tomb. It was truly spiritual being there!

Hi Manuel, thanks for positing this video, it is amazing. I visited Rome & Vatican City last Nov. 13 to 16, 2024 as part of Italian Pilgrimage. I am blessed, that was my 3rd time to visit. There are lots of constructions in preparation for Jubilee next year. I also tried to book for Necropolis and St. Peter Burial Place, but this is closed from August to December 2024, same reason for next year's event. Hoping I can visit again on April 2025, for the Canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis, and finally to visit Necropolis. God bless you. //Manuelito from Toronto

The technology is amazing and all, but do they really have to make you say AI in every single sentence while nothing has anything to do with artificial intelligence...
@roberterdman72682 ай бұрын
Thanks Manuel. Given the scale and level of detail and number of inaccessible areas in the Vatican, a virtual tour is the way to go. The entire area, especially the Museum, is over-touristed and crowded with people. Kudos to the Vatican and Microsoft for making this happen. We made it to the crypt on a recent visit, but were not allowed into the grotto. Very cool, I'll check out the virtual AI tour for sure.

Another use of AI that we can definitely approve of!
@Wandrative2 ай бұрын
Its just scanning and AI identifying existing things. Its another marketing for overblowing the word 'AI' and tech companies throwing money at people to promote all AI generally.
@saniainez2 ай бұрын
@Wandrative true, though perhaps the "AI" makes it easier and faster than just stitching all the pictures another way (?) I don't know much tho so do correct me if I'm wrong
@Wandrative2 ай бұрын
@@saniainez Its just all 3D scanning worked by videographers.. the Deep learning 'AI' part was only used for finding cracks in certain walls, which is less then 5% of this project. But this project was indeed funded by all the tech companies to promote all of their other AI to the Catholics in general. I am very disgusted that the church was even on board of promoting the agent that's destroying intelligent design itself.
