No, there is no ethnic cleansing. There is no doubt that Kukis have suffered terribly at the hands of Meiteis. My own neighbours and friends are victims too. It is also true Meiteis have had problems with almost all communications, Nagas, Pangals and Mayangs in the past. Most Meiteis have also becoming increasingly stupid and think Myanmar Kukis and Manipuri Kukis are the same. Having said that, Kukis have also attacked and hurt and killed many Meiteis. Let's not pretend it didn't happen. Unlike what Dr. Haokip likes to keep saying, the first casualties were Meiteis on May 3, not Kukis. You also forget that when Kukis and Nagas clashed in the 90s, it was the Meiteis who provided Kukis food, shelter and other supplies. Now, I understand it is human tendency to think only our truth is absolute and we fail to comprehend why others don't believe us. If there are deaths, injuries and losses to property and displaced people in relief camps for one community, the same situation is true for the other group as well. The reasons for the present crisis could be ST status or poppy cultivation or illegal immigration depending on who you ask. The only thing that is certain is it is not in anyone's favour to continue with this hate mongering whether on the Kuki side or the Meitei side. I don't know about Churachandpur (Lamka) but there are still many Kuki women who are married to Meiteis and Nagas and other groups in Imphal who cannot risk visiting families in Churachandpur or Kuki majority areas. I also know women from Meiteis, Nagas and other communities married to Kukis who are no longer able to visit their families in Imphal. Is this not heartbreaking? For a peaceful inclusive solution, both sides need to have impartial, honest and brave representatives who are willing to admit their own mistakes and make the effort to pursue peace.
