The vehicle shown is a 2000 Dodge Caravan with a serious oil leak.The front crankshaft oil seal is replaced as well as the timing belt, the water pump gasket and a cam shaft seal. Part three covers the mount plate, upper timing covers, setting up the top dead center position, crankshaft pulley, damper and bolt and the lower timing cover. I'm currently tearing down the 3L V6 in my 89' Caravan SE to replace the water pump. So far I have been able to skip removing a few things. I was horrified to see the cost of the C.S. removal tools, they're over $80 around here. I remembered one of the bushcraft KZbinr's I watch constantly saying a Canadian Jam Knot can work on anything... he's right, I was able to tie one around the C.S. pulley and tie it off on the axle to hold the pulley still and keep everything top dead center while I took all the bolts out. Considering Im a Landscaper and the most I've worked on cars before is changing tires, batteries and spark plugs, your videos have been a lifesaver. I got to say 70$ in parts and 2 swearing filled days working into the wee hours on the weekend is much better than paying someone an exorbinant amount to do it.

Way to go! Not really understanding this jam knot method on the C.S. (crankshaft I assume) but thanks for sharing your ideas.

Great video and info. Something to try, if you are not planning to remove the water pump...the motor mount plate (the S.O.B. to remove) CAN BE removed without touching any power steering pump bracket bolts IF you remove the large Timing Belt cover simultaneously with the motor mount plate. This is not nearly as difficult as it sounds, and it saved me some serious time. Good luck to all you people who, having the patience of Job, attack this job with fervor and patience! Thank you so much for having the patience to make and post these videos. I have a '94 Caravan with only 72,000 miles and have been dreading replacing the timing belt. Now it has started leaking oil at one or more of the seals. Now I have to tackle the job and after watching your videos I know I can do it if I have the patience. Sometimes I wonder if just dropping the whole power train out might be easier, but I don't have a place to work on things like I used to when I was younger. Keep Wrenching !!

Thanks for the comment and you're welcome. You hit it on the head, patience (and the time to be patient) is vital on a job like this. You have to be able to live without the vehicle for awhile. I never considered dropping the power train but this job does make you wonder if there's a better way. I hope your repair turns out great.

Got down to the timing belt today, it was completely soaked in oil, I am suprised that the water pump worked. I bought the 97 caravan for a 100 bucks. I just wanted the trans for my other caravan. My main ride blew the trans, so I though lets see what up with that 100 buck junker....I figured the valve cover gasket needed changing that all...so changed them. fired her up brought it up to operating temps looking underneath and seen a puddle of oil....little research found you and now I am thinking I just might end up with a decent ride for a couple of hundred bucks....to be continued...

I am having trouble removing the backplate because of the power steering pump on my 2000 Caravan 3.0L. Did you remove the power steering pump pulley or power steering pump. Great video...Thanks

Yeah, the pump does have to come off. There's a bracket that mounts to the back of the engine and two bolts that go through the mounting bracket.Then the pump can be hung up out of the way. Good luck and thanks for watching the videos.

These videos are great! I need your advice Sir. I replaced the timing belt and water pump on my 2000 Plymouth Grand Voyager with the 3.0 engine. I made the "Stop Bar" you recommended. That's great to have. I took off the rear sprocket in order to get the alternator bracket off, then the water pump. I put the new water pump and new belt on. As I attempted to align the timing mark on that (rear) sprocket, it seems to always move - sheesh. I did it about 8 times. It kept springing back. I didn't turn it fully, just used the wrench and socket to pull it back to the position it was in. I finally got the marks aligned, but the sprocket is still about just a half tooth away. It's aligned as humanly possible. Will that matter? The front sprocket timing mark is right on point. The main crank shaft too is aligned with the mark on the oil pump. The timing is good. I had the same issue with that cam moving. Correct timing happens to be when the rocker is balanced on the lobe of a cam. It can easily slip off as the belt is installed. Well done. It's good to be a worrier when setting up the timing lol

That's a hell of a job!! So how often does the timing belt and water pump need to be replaced on these engines??

+Seth Williams I believe the owner's manual recommends replacing the belt at 90K. I don't think there is a recommended interval on the pump

tapping the crank pulley without using the puller tool always work?

Well, it has for me so far. I wouldn't be surprised to fine one really stuck on though and if a hammer and pry bars don't work, then it's time for a puller.
