I have to say this video saved me a lot of money. My wife's Dodge Avenger suffered from the same, lots of so call "mechanics" gave her the wrong diagnostic but still want her to charged her lots of money. I used to be a mechanic in the US Army, I just listened to this video, showed me what to listened for and how to fix it. If you know the answer to his question then you should reply for him. Amazing how people can be critical of a FREE video. Especially one that is that old. To directly answer the question you don't need to remove the center bolt as the hub is serviced as an assembly which you can clearly see in the video. If you watch the video and pay attention you can see what to do. Again WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!!!!! Thanks for watching.

Great Video! i have done quit a few of these,the only thing i will add is that sometimes that bearing can be a REAL pain to get out of there.They can be seized and rusted on there so Lots of penetrating oil maybe a lot of pounding and maybe a heating torch may be needed

Well done, with the caveat that bolts *rarely* come out so easily. In my case, I had to give up because the end of one was so corroded it got absolutely stuck about midway out, even after squirting in penetrating lubricant and then screwing it back in to work the penetrating lubricant in deeper. (shrug) Usually a breaker bar is required to start them, and failing that, heat, maybe even alternately with cold. One thing I do when the repair isn't urgent is to shoot the penetrating lubricant (Free All has worked best for me) on the bolts and hubs and tap them with a hammer to get some vibration to work the lubricant in well ahead of time, like days before the job. When using a hammer to remove parts I want to keep I typically hold a wooden stick against it to prevent damage. Also, it makes perfect sense to update the drum brakes while at it so that PITA is taken care of for the foreseeable future.

Nice Tutorial ! My Caravan did not have the threaded holes, to extract the the drum from the shaft. I drilled a couple of 1/8" holes along the perimeter of the hub and each stud, to get penetrating fluid between the bearing and the drum. The bearing also gave a a lot of trouble , as it was a very tight fit, .and did not come out easily.

well done ... ty.. mine seized right up at work parking lot...skidded the tire to the shop...removed the wheel and wacked the drum with a hammer....freed it up.... been noisy for a couple of years... now i can get fixing it ... just needed to see if it was a complete assembly or did i need to press in bearings in... you covered it all.. consequently i drove 450 km home after that with no problems ...its noisy and needs replacing for sure

Just finished my 1999 Dodge Caravan. It has 174k miles and they had never been replaced. You will most likely not be able to "tap" the old hub out. Pounded for 3 hours, went to my local mechanic and borrowed a tool that fits over the lugs to allow you to hammer out the hub. Great video but there are always the exception.

I just did this on a 2000 dodge caravan. This is definitely not a beginners job. He shows using a simple hammer and tapping a couple times on the rear or the hub to release it from the backing plate - this was not the case for me. Mine required a sledge hammer/slide hammer combo and many hours of labor to get it off. Just a heads up for back-yard mechanics like myself.

I just got 2 assemblies, drum, backing plates, brakes, spindles from a wrecker as I am building a Mini Dozer. Looks as though my spindles are just rusted in, as they won't budge ! I let them soak in 'nuts off' overnight. The brake assemblies are for the Skid Steer, utilizing the emergency brake cable. The spindles, will be for the front hubs.

Good video. Should add those 4 hub mounting bolts should be torqued to 95ft / lbs (roughly the same torque as the wheel nuts. Just as important as the wheel nuts you could loose a wheel if they come loose! Pneumatic and electric guns have inconsistent torque. Andrew likely knows the power of his gun, but you may not.

I always use anti-seize compound on them also, makes getting the next one out easy. One thing I liked about the older cars I worked on as a kid, having to replace a wheel bearing was rare. But I just chalk it up to foreigners making parts out of junk steel. Even the tools were better years ago, not like this junk stuff you buy now.

Gave me a good tips on socket size, ext bar and knuckle pc. and so on. I knew with the parts being on the car for 15 years and being in the extreme of Alaska it would be a pain to remove! Wear safety glasses my socket spun off a couple times. Have a big hammer and lots of penetrating oil and maybe make a tool to knock off the part.

My 2000 caravan has abs...on the back of bearing assembly,it has what looks to be a cogged or toothed piece that the abs sensor uses....Do I still just pound on that til the assembly breaks loose

what do you do if the back of the hub is plastic? Mine is a crysler town and country and the back of the hub is plastic with a wire connection (unlike this). I cant hit ir from the back as it will just shatter the plastic connection.

nice video to bad your example was not on a vehicle from NY with rusted seized bearing hub. dang i thought the four bolts were going to be an issue nope the tight fit and rust are making it extremely difficult. several hours and still no go. now to find a video with a good solution.

Any growling sound in the back can only be caused by a bearing. A brake drum would not cause this. In the front, their are many possible causes.

This is true but not always if the rear brake dust sheild is causing the noise also. But his diagnosis for the bearing is right.. Dodge is know for crap metal lol

I had a quick question I replaced rear wheel bearings on my 08 dodge avenger and the back are drums and after being replaced my abs light and brake light came on do you know why? Also I received non abs bearings so I have to replace them with abs ones will this fix the abs and brake light?

Probably debris got on the front reading area of the ABS sensor. Take it out of the channel it is in and clean it off. Probably not bad, but if it is, not expensive to buy a new one. Or, hit the junkyard for even cheaper!

Ok, anyone with a 97 or just as shitty out there anywhere near the shore or salted roads, your going to need a acetylene oxygen torch, 10# slap hammer with a 90 and or lug bolt pattern hub puller, 10# sledge, new drum, PB blaster, die grinder with flap or sanding discs, 3/16 drill to drill holes around perimeter where drum and hub have .010 interference rust fit. Probably will need new shoes, hardware, wheel cylinders, and roll of brake line, anti seize, blue loctite, If luck is on your side 2 hours per welded rusted hub for a 20 minute job because of shitty metal and no anti seize.
