@arrowguy173trans ams are solid cars, the plastic is only the interior as ANY cars, just plain simple and not pretentious. Lots of rattles but they can be addressed. The 5.7 V8 is a solid engine known to last 250k+ miles with regular maintenance, but the 700r4 trans is not up to it. I have a 1985 corvette and with 132k miles it still drives like it's on rails and has plenty of torque. Also in much better shape than most European cars with half the age and 100k KM (not miles). American cars have cheap interior and some models have bad engine or trans flaws, but I can guarantee in Europe you do not see cars lasting half as much as Crown Victoria's, chevrolet tahoes, Ford explorer, etc. Now if you bring in Japanese cars, well then that's another story...but design-wise they are not appealing in most cases for what's worth.

So the entire time it was the rocker arms under the valve covers that was making that loud knocking noise plus taking up a lot of power? And I thank god that I didn't buy a new motor yet, because I even took it to a shop and other people were saying that my motor was blew. So now I ordered the rocker arms=260$ plus valve cover gaskets=16-20$ from eBay, because dealerships are very expensive with car parts and putting them on! And when they arrive in the mail, I am going to be putting them on myself, I'd rather work on my own car than to pay a mechanic or dealership. Come out a whole lot cheaper then you think! Also I appreciate the video this video as well for saving me lots of money.

You still hear a tick every once in awhile because the dealership only replaced the rocker shafts. The rocker arms have wear on them too giving excessive play, hence a tick. The dealership only did half the job.
@luis5017moreno5 жыл бұрын
which is why you should never trust the dealerships... Only reason i would take a car to the dealer is for PCM/ECM reprogramming or radio. Nowadays a lot of auto shops do a way better job at troubleshooting and handling electrical components

Both 3.5 chargers I had had this problem around 100,000-115,000 miles. In both cases my car started misfiring so hard because my lifters weren’t doing their job that my entire engine would shut off. It is still making the this ticking/tapping. I think it was probably sold to me with this ticking noise. This happened 1 year ago as the dealership rejected my concern and even thought it might be the transmission. I beleive they didnt want to fix it since it would of cost them money and lost of time. These engines also have a short runner valve problem. These are the valves inside the plastic intake manifold. It is possible to remove manifold and rip out the plastic valves inside. This stopped the ticking from the top of my motor. It’s a 4.0 from a grand caravan.

Mine had a small tick like this in the past week on an '18 w 3.6L. Turns out its been over 100 degrees for two weeks. Car used more oil than normal in that window (those temps arent normal in New England). Dipstick was nearly on the low dot, its usually fine till the next oil change. All guages and temps read fine. Added 3/4 quart of oil, to full, and the ticking went away. Learned these cars are VERY sensitive to oil levels. Oil is always changed ahead of schedule by dealer and never been dirty, the valves shouldn't be caked or dirty. Thought it may have been a driveshaft center bearing starting to go, as it was hard to tell where the ticking was coming from under car by dash/shift area with the noise. Its gone now, was just oil level with the rockers - not on low yet, but very close and made this sound under acceleration only. If that helps anyone else. Thanks for sharing this vid.

Wow! A couple of those sounded terrible! Mine has over 300,000 miles and doesn't have that noise. I did have to replace that intake manifold though. The valve devices that go inside that manifold ended up getting stuck. Make sure you change that transmission fluid. I've been meaning to for two years. Now the torque converter is acting up. And I had to change all the bushings around 286,000. That 2006 Charger SXT has been reliable. Update on the torque converter acting up. It wasn't that. It was the rubber coupling, in place of a universal joint.
@shark700070002 ай бұрын
5 years later, and I came across this video again. It wasn't my torque converter, but it was the rubber coupler for the driveshaft. Now, the engine rattles at 5K RPMs. So I was trying to find something on that and found this one again. It hasn't been driven a lot. I had a suspension and exhaust issue, so it sat for a while.

I had a 2009 Dodge Journey R/T AWD 3.5L with only 74500KM that would tick before it started until it was at normal operating temp, eventually it developed an awful issue with smoking heavily on startup, we thought we fixed it by changing a nasty pcv valve, then something else went and it started smoking heavily even when driving down the road. I was told that I would need an engine swap or a full rebuild, so I sold it for scrap instead. Besides the ticking, the engine always ran really well until one day I started it and smoked the whole parking lot out 😂

I have a noise problem, and it sounds like its coming from that general area, but its definitely dont sound like that. I know i have a bad EGR valve that im fixing to replace, but its on the back if the motor.

Tough to say but one thing I would do in that case is put a mechanic's stethoscope on each of the pulleys up front and see if there's a grinding noise in any of them. If so, replace that pulley or the accessory unit it's on. And if not, you've only spent $10 on a stethoscope and 10 minutes poking around.

@MarspeedCars8 жыл бұрын
Is yours a special edition? There is a 300M Special offered in 2002, that is a similar engine (still 3.5L V6) but it was built a bit different, that car is the only car with that engine (more horsepower+torque - 255HP, 258ft-lb, also it used 91/premium gas and came with a dual exhaust.) So that engine would be slightly different than the one in this car, but really not a huge change. Otherwise the normal 300Ms have pretty much the same 3.5 engine. Also have used that oil treatment and it seems to quiet it down for sure. My engine just seems to be noisy (still smooth) even after this fix so I guess that's how it is. I have no other issues with it
@kaiserbill57118 жыл бұрын
Marspeed Hi there , No, it is not the special just the base model 300m - I use premium gas even though it is supposed to use regular. We are stuck with ethanol in the gas here in Dallas so I use Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas when I fill up. Does yours have a timing chain or belt ? I had my timing belt and water pump replaced simply because the car is 14 years old. Will probably have the radiator, thermostat, O2 censor and cam censor replaced for the same reason. These engines get a bad rap due to the 2.7 liter fallout but that IMHO is undeserved. I travel and use rental cars so I check out the new offerings - none so far are as comfortable as my 300m and it handles better even now than most of what I have driven.

Is there anything you can do to temporarily fix the noise until I can get the money saved up to fix it?? Does it hurt the car to drive it as it is right now, and how much does it cost american dollars to get it fixed??

Hi, would this be the same fix for a 2004 Grand Caravan? My van has been making the same noise and It gets louder when I accelerate.

Is this a common problem with the 2.7L V6’s too??
@TheAlmightyBob045 жыл бұрын
No because the rocker arm assembly is different than the 3.5/4.0 engines.

Almost every time I start my car, I hear the exact same noise but WAY louder and it sometimes hurts my ears and it happens every 30 mins for about one minute
@prodigym2 жыл бұрын
Did you ever find out what made that noise?
@CJBERMUDEZ234 жыл бұрын
the knocking is not normal... dealerships are rip offs and they lie doing partial work. half the time they don’t know what they are doing

does this apply to the 3.5 found on the 300m ? 1999-2004
@MarspeedCars7 жыл бұрын
Nicholas Coucoularis I think it should, the design of those engines is very similar just maybe slightly different

good job! can you explain the warranty part to me again? it was fully covered or you payed a portion?
@MarspeedCars8 жыл бұрын
I have a third party (Lubrico) warranty with the car for all engine and transmission issues. So I am covered up to a portion (a few thousand dollars I believe). I had some other work done as well but Lubrico covered everything for the bill I showed in the video.

I must be lucky, since my '10 Charger is still pretty quiet, 108k miles on the clock. Maybe I will have them replaced when I get the timing belt and water pump replaced.

Is this a safety issue?
@_NotDownWithOPP_4 жыл бұрын
Radford Tataryn thanks for your response! I’m having it checked out today finally! Hopefully it is something else that’s less expensive to repair. Would the car make a similar sound if it’s time for a tune-up/spark plug replacement?

You need the rocker arms & shafts done. I heard no tick after the expensive out of pocket repair. Thankfully this POS ('06 Magnum SXT) finally died. Still looks good except for the drivers seat, a door molding and those cheap window sun nuked door beltlines.

Can synthetic oil prevent it from happening again?
@MarspeedCars3 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure about prevention but the synthetic oil definitely can’t hurt! I’ve been running synthetic and my 3.5 is now at 211k miles

@2averagenoobs1086 жыл бұрын
That ticking is normal in the V6's AND V8's, but you can't really hear it in the V8 as much.

2AverageNoobs I agree and you have to check your oil a few times a week .. I found it low at the end of my oil change period.. keeping up on oil will help..

@@johnringoo756 I just bought an o6 charger and it has the knocking noise. No check engine light but what should I do to get rid of it completely?
@WizzRacing3 жыл бұрын
Common issue with them. Don't l;eave out the Flex plate.. it likes to crack and makes the same noise..As I just bought 2008 Caravan SXT 100k miles. In mint condition for $800.00 They thought the rods were knocking..Well rods don't knock under the valve covers Them rocker arms do... Some rare cases. The timing chain slaps.

Jesus Christ I just got an oil change 2 days ago and the tick is the worst it’s been yet...... aaaaand just like that it stopped.... literally mid comment it’s gone. Cars as quite as when I bought it 100,000 miles ago..... dang... it’s a freaking miracle.

Mine definitely sounds like the 4th one. I'm living in my truck and definitely can't afford to get it fixed. I have 2017 Dodge Journey GT, only 31397 miles. I just hope it's not that big of a problem. I just paid my next 2 car payments yesterday with stimulus money and now this. Smh
