Thank you for posting. Max’s scores were from a time where music was part of the entertainment. Now lost in many of today’s films where most music is merely underscore. And Max did, like Victor Young, reuse many of his motifs e.g. his Indian scores in the Searchers , Died With Their Boots On, Charge at Feather River etc. Though I was very young I did get to see this movie in a cinema. What a childhood with a father who loved westerns. And such a great score. I was hooked forever. Magic times now gone. Thank you for the music. Thank you for the memories. Stay safe 🥰🇦🇺🇺🇸🧸

Thanks Fred🤠 Well done Max Steiner👏🏻 Research: Inspired by the story of Wyatt Earp, the story has a more historical than epic feel, and gives in less to clichés than usual. The direction is rich, accurate and personal; the work on color is interesting, as a function of greater emotional expressiveness. Among the first films shot in Technicolor. It is the 7th of 11 films in which Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland appeared together. “Dodge City” was one of the biggest grossers of the year.

Max Steiner created the distinctive sound of Warner Bros. studios particularly in the 40's with what Bette Davis termed as his wall-to-wall music. Maybe not so much of a compliment, but his output was prodigious and his work was masterful. He's one of the forefathers of film scoring thanks to his music for KING KONG, but his scoring resulted in famous themes right through the 50's, including the famous love theme from A SUMMER PLACE. His most well-known work is probably GONE WITH THE WIND. There's no denying he is a legend in the annals of movie music.

“Dodge City” (1939), directed by Michael Curtiz and starring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland and Ann Sheridan (in lovely performances) is one of the few “A-westerns” of the 30s that established the formula on how to do a (successful) western in Hollywood (including a great barroom-brawl scene). Also opening the doors for more to come, the formula was kept and just slightly changed during the ongoing decades. The musical accompaniment was given by the unmistakable Max Steiner, who, not only was the workhorse of Warner Bros., but also enjoyed a good relationship with the director, (both would be celebrated for their work on “Casablanca” (1942)). “Dodge City” was released just during Steiner’s fruitful years as one of the most busy composers (in history). Max Steiner had a distinct style that really fit the Warners ethos of that time. While Davis called it wall-to-wall, I prefer the term "thick". Quite different from today. Thanks Fred.

Hello, Fred! Although Steiner was the first film musician to compose strictly following the click track ( in " King Kong " ), in " Dodge City " he writes an an explanatory score, concerned with creating more consistent atmospheres, with longer well _ constructed melodies and with two characteristics that summarize the work in its musical aspect: it is his best score for a western and, in this genre, the one that best used the leitmotif inherited from Wagner ( of whom Steiner was a great admirer ). I have often wondered if Max Steiner used scores or variations for "Dodge City" that he did not use for "Gone With the Wind". Both scores were written roughly the same time. There was no 'intellectual property' clauses back then and if any material that Steiner did not use at MGM, he likely took it back the WB to be used on his next projects.

Speaking of Max Steiner. Maybe 🤔 you could add to the list the respective scores he did for King Kong (1933) and Now, Voyager (1942; won 🏆 him a second Academy Award 🥇 for Best Score)

Jeffrey, the just went on the to-do list! If I remember correctly I put some efforts into the KONG score but something let to it being not released... I don't remember anymore and will take a new try at some point in the future. As for VOYAGER, the original recordings haven't been released to this day (except main and end titles, if I am correctly). But I heard of somebody who got more... :-) Best and thanks! Fred

Hello Hamburglar, the movie, as the score devided audiences a lot, especially those who knew the original movie (or read the novel by Erich Maria Remarque) and I personally would count myself to them. Maybe some time has to pass but for now I don't feel about dedicating myself to it for a while... I don't want to sound harsh at all and it's just my personal feeling but I guess the result would be unsatisfying for you as well, as no heart and soul could be put into the video... But we have so many great scores that await us to be discovered and / or celebrated, right? 😊 Wishing you all the best my friend! Fred
