Thanks for the video!!! Rather than RTV sealant, I used 16" of 3/4" rubber hose from the auto parts store, clamped it to the drain pipe, and routed the hose down and away from the exhaust. The hose is somewhat kinked, but still drips water onto the ground when the A/C is running (and away from the firewall). The fix cost me $10 ($2 for the hose, $2 for the clamp, and $6 for 12 replacement grommets). The local Dodge dealer wanted $500 to fix this problem. Thanks for helping me identify the problem and saving me $490!!!!

A 75 cent 3/4 inch 90 degree copper elbow add whatever silicone/rtv/hot glue/whatever sealant would have been a cheaper, faster, more effective, and better looking alternative to the garden hose imo. Plus the dealership should of directed you to the dodge caravan drain tube replacement that is commonly added to the dakota/Durango (serves same purpose as 90 degree elbow I mentioned) and the part is only like $5 from the dealership

I've been having an inordinate amount of "condensation" inside my Dakota. Mostly on the windshield. Your solution appears to make a helluva lot more sense than anything else I've been able to find thus far. Thank you.

I had the same issue in my 04 Dakota. I did use red RTV instead of the blue, because of the heat. I also inserted a smaller hose into the existing outlet with an elbow pointing down. Doesn’t hurt to have extra protection from this happening again. Thank you for the video.

I had the same water issue on my 2004 SLT Dakota, They have a service bulletin for this problem but I did not no what the fix was until I found your video. I did the fix as you show, and it fixed the problem. I left the carpet pulled back for a week so it would dry out and to check for leaks. We had a number of heavy rains in that time and no water was on the floor, so it was the AC drain seal leak. So I "barrowed" a lift in one of the stalls at my favorite shop where I have had more than a few repairs as well as maintenance done over the years. After paying a local body shop to "look" for this leak a couple years back, thinking this had to be condensation created by the location of the catalytic converter which caused what seemed to be a basketball sized wet spot under my floor mat in the carpet. No trail of wetness to show that the source was that drain tube?! That was explained by the rubber strip across the floor panel of the firewall. Removed the "tin/aluminum path plate" as you did & filled the area on the "large cell" foam gasket around the drain tube. Apparently, fairly early on, the large cell foam "gasket" is more compressed so no initial leak, but after a bit of jostling (driving) the "compression" releases and the wicking at the straight tube (design flaw from inception) where a lot of condensation drains is pushed toward the firewall & the poor choice of a "gasket" the manufacturer chose. The fix is just as you suggested, blob a considerable amount of high temp RTV around entire tube with as much excess as possible directed to the sides & bottom of this "gasket". Lift carpet up for a day or two, I used 3 towels to soak up residual water & short 2x4's to hold carpet up allowing all the wetness to dry out testing as I drove for almost a week with A/C on, checking for any more water, smelling RTV for a few days. Once satisfied the leak was assuaged the carpet was returned to it original position, dry & no more leak! Dodge should have recalled all vehicles affected! I have owned this 2002 Dakota SLT Crew Cab for the last 14 years, paid to "find" this "leak", told about the "drain hole blockage" when they never found it, (likely never looked). It took me all of about 45 minutes to "fix" (and a fifth of Bourbon to the shop owner for use of one of his racks) & viola! Now moving on to soundproofing the entire cab & custom interior design! Thanks again for your post, helped me & apparently more than a few here too!

Great video SoCal Beer. Thanks for a simple solution for a frustrating problem. Just wished I had seen it several months ago when I was replacing O2 sensors and the only way to get to the passenger side one was removal the wheel well panel. I been having the same leak for a long time and it has ruined the passenger side carpet padding. Just kicking myself for not checking youtube sooner. This is definitely a design flaw by Dodge and there should have been a recall for them to fix it right. You would expect a drain pipe to be vertical and discharge at the bottom or below the engine compartment. SMH!!!

I own a 2009 Dakota with the v8. As far as I have seen on my truck, it isn't a tube that comes out but it is a hard plastic piece of the AC/Heater core box. Thanks for the information you posted, I caulked the valve but I was still getting water in the front passenger seat. So, by process of elimination, I found my leak was coming from the back window frame, at the bottom right corner,(passenger side corner). I put a garden hose there and watched the water leak in. I took out the back seat and found the water dripping down. I put silicone in the space in between the window frame and the truck. We have had 3 rain storms and it is not leaking anymore! Thanks for your video.

Dodge Parts dept has a spring loaded (thumb & index finger squeeze spring) 90* boot to go over that tube so you can divert the water drainage downward too. I siliconed mine as it was done in this video as well as added the boot a couple of days later...using silicone and the spring. I do not know the part# but the parts dept was very familiar with this leak on the Dakotas, Durangos, and RAMS so coming up with the boot shouldn't be a big issue for them.

I have been a Chrysler product fan for a very long time and have used this tube on several vehicles over the years to fix the same issue. Hi, great video.. As you can surmized, I'm experience a similar problem, but its on the driver side. After looking at your video, can I safely assume, there's a similar hose sticking out of the driver side firewall? Thanks in advance...
@socalbeer62128 жыл бұрын
Hi Dawson, there not a tube on that side of the truck. The tube is strictly for the condensation unit on the AC which is located on the passenger side of the vehicle. As your problem occurs after it rains, I would guess that you have a leak in a seal somewhere. I would check around your windshield, drivers side window, and the firewall area.

a friend of mine did find the leak, i noticed rust on the driver side top of the windshield at the seal. starts on the driver side windshield above where the visor is.. the water would go in there, then follow down the driver side pillar, then all the way across the bottom of the windshield (where it was supposed to seal) then to the passenger side floor board. at first i noticed it barely beginning to show rust on the driver side at the windshield. looking at it up close it looked like tunnels in an ant farm. i could actually see places where the water had been tunneling its way through. one of those things i had to see to believe thanks for your time

@socalbeer62129 жыл бұрын
+Bignene628 Yes! I currently drive 50-100 miles a day with the AC on Max, no issues at all.

I completed this repair but the leaking continues (2000 dodge Durango). I found leaking around the antenna seal. I have also seen references to a faulty weld causing the problem. You did not show the outcome of your repair?
@socalbeer62128 жыл бұрын
OUTCOME: Completely fixed the problem. It has been almost 2 years now and not a drop of water in the passenger side foot well. Still haven't fixed my headliner though....
@timothyschmitz24839 жыл бұрын
So all you did was add this silocone around the tube and it fixed the problem leaking into your floorboard? 2002 Dakota same motor
@socalbeer62129 жыл бұрын
+Timothy Schmitz Yep, still working fine to this day. Most days I am running my AC on Max for 50-100 miles...no issues.

Just out of curiosity, how did you end up reattaching the cloth on your ceiling? I have literally the exact problem happening with my 2002 Dakota. Your video is a Godsend. Thank you!

I ended up stripping it out and leaving the bare fiber board...actually doesn't look too bad as it matches my grey interior....just dont look too close..lol
@popadozenluudsoldude8 жыл бұрын
wouldn't be a lot easier and just as effective to seal up the area with GreatStuff?
@tdf860610 жыл бұрын
I was wondering if that fixed the issue. I am having the same issue. 2004 dakota
@socalbeer621210 жыл бұрын
Kevin Yes it has fixed the problem. I had to let the passenger side floorboard dry out for a couple weeks afterward. The foam padding soaks up a ton of water. Now everything is completely dry and the musty smell is gone.

My Dakota is doing this but I have a Sport Edition, no AC. Any Ideas?

Other videos have mentioned window leaks. Not sure.

Then it's probably the heater core.

INSERT SMALLER RUBBER TUBE EXTENSION IN THE CONDENSATION DRAINAGE OUTLET PIPE, POINTING DOWNWARD TO REROUTE CONDENSATION MOISTURE/WATER OUT, SECURE EXTENSION PIECE WITH FINGER ''SQUEEZE-SPRING'' METAL CLAMP. MAKE YOUR JOB CLEAN AND SIMPLE, DON'T USE GLUE OR PLASTIC COMPOUND.
@richardoconnor163810 жыл бұрын
Did your leak come from rain water or when the a/c was running? If it was the rain water, did this fix the problem? Thanks!
@socalbeer62129 жыл бұрын
Richard OConnor It was an A/C leak, I do not have any problems with rain.

Anyone know if this works with a 2001 dodge Durango ,I have the same problem but I can seem to find the damn drain plug
@socalbeer62122 жыл бұрын
The Durango and Dakota had similar layouts to the engine bay and suspension. I would think it would be in the same place. The metal shield would be the first thing I would look for.
@HelloWorld-ql3ki3 жыл бұрын
I wonder why these didn't leak starting from day one when they were brand new?
@socalbeer62122 жыл бұрын
That is a good question. Maybe over time the angle of the tube changes?
@autocad32272 жыл бұрын
Maybe the gasket deteriorates. Good for a couple years maybe?

you would think that these so called engenieers that design this drain hose would test it further I have owned several dodge trucks and they have the same problem ,this soaking backup also damages the heater core and housing which can damage either cores that are in that box , I tell you its scary hopefully they have corrected this situation in late models trucks which I am about to purchase .- reason why foreign made vehicles sell they are attentive to these minor flaws .

could one just use compressed air and blow out the clog from the inside??
@socalbeer62127 жыл бұрын
Kleo 84 it isnt clogged. The water flows out and then wicks down the underside of the tube and into the cab
@deborahmartin60752 жыл бұрын
2007 is doing the same
@stephenshelton42679 жыл бұрын
Instead of sealing the end, would it have been possible to extend the tube? Could the tube have been pulled back into the cab, extended with another piece of tubing using a connector piece, and then pushed back through? This does seem to be an incredibly dumb design decision on Chrysler's part.
@socalbeer62129 жыл бұрын
Stephen Shelton The sealant was placed around the tube, just sealing the rubber gasket to the firewall. I do not know how effective adding tube would be as the engine block is extremely close to this area. I would be concerned about the tube melting.

01 Dakota 4.7 QC... The design says it all. I mean WTF? Had the same issue. I added a 90 degree elbow.. and that did the trick for me.. But that's after I pulled the carpet out twice to dry it out. Good vid I hear this question all the time..
@timothyschmitz24839 жыл бұрын
We Need The Truth So you stuck a 90 degree elbow on there and you had no more water on your floor?
@DC-pv3yh9 жыл бұрын
That is correct. The elbow will only solve the water drip out of the firewall though.. If your still getting water after that. It could be the heater core.
@timothyschmitz24839 жыл бұрын
What size if you don't mind me asking? I drilled a hole in the floorboard just so it'd drain
@DC-pv3yh9 жыл бұрын
I will check don't quite remember..
@DC-pv3yh9 жыл бұрын
I used a formed heater hose. I don't remember what it came off of. But I basically just cut off what I needed . which is just the 90. But with the hose versus using a 90 pvc u can just use a hose clamp to tighten in on there.
@nauriskazerovskis31349 жыл бұрын
or u can just use elbow pipe, so the watter can drip dow not back
@noel7777noel8 жыл бұрын
Than the heat shield will not go back on.
