I've got a 02 2500 360 gasser 4x4 with 4.10 gears. I love it. Runs great but the transmission was crapping out so I swapped in a nv4500 5 speed. Now I'm wanting to swap in a Cummins. Watching these videos of people swapping them in makes me want to do it more. Hardest part is finding a good donor truck for the right price.

Yea .. I cleaned and painted the frame back in 2012 when I built the truck and it still cleans up good! Dumping salt on a highway used by cars made of metal is an unforgiveable sin!

Hey Bob I did the same thing on my 97 dodge ram 1500 4x4 ! pulled the 318 gasser and auto out plus the both front end and rear end and put the Dana 60 up front and the Dana 70 rear! I bought a 95 doner truck with out engine and tranny for everything else! I bought a 1992 2WD regular cab and an auto with 180K on it that looked like it had been used for a "Bumper Car" and put that engine in there (The auto is for my 4BT project) I used the STOCK front and rear springs, but put the 2 1/2 inch Leveling spacer under the front 1500 springs and they have a nice soft ride and have not sagged a bit ! I will be posting a video on MY KZbin ( LarryMulalley) channel once the Snow leaves this cold Montana country ! LOL

Hey Bob very interesting build. I'm considering doing this to my 01 ram. Got any advice? And how much did the swap cost. My ram is about restored down to everything but the engine. I already have a 2500 suspension. Still have stock axles but are regeared to 4.56 and the truck is on 37s. So doing the Cummins swap is way cheaper than ditching the $17,000 already invested in the truck and getting another one that already has a Cummins in it

I payed $2,500 for a 95 Dodge 3500 2wd that the body was rough and the engine needed rebuild. I used the engine and trans and everything else under the hood. The engine rebuild kit cost me about $700 and machine shop charged about $300 to bore it out for the .040 over pistons. Your axles will probably hold up until you start calling on it! If you drive it normally you shouldn't have a problem. Just remember that you need more than just the engine .... you need the radiator, intercooler, engine wire harness ... etc ... and I'm not sure the harness will work on an 01. On mine it plugged right in to the original. I would want a donor diesel truck to do the swap. That way ... you have all the parts! You want the 12 valve ... anything newer than that will be computer controlled ... not good except for emissions and putting money in the injector pump builders hands. 12 valves are bullet proof .. even the first gens 89-93!

Have you had any issues with frame twisting?. I've heard people say that the main reason not to do this swap with a 1500 is cus the frame will just get tweaked.

No problem. Of course I don't tow 30,000 lbs with it either. My car hauler and car on it is about it. But I cranked the engine power way up and empty it just smokes the tires in 3rd gear but no frame twisting. Back in 2012 when I built it my buddy (as I took him for a tire smoking ride) told me the rear end wouldn't last 6 months. The other day he said he can't believe it's held up. Believe me ... this swap makes the ultimate daily driver and I get 20+ mpg easily. So if you plan on towing heavy loads go with a 1 ton .. otherwise ... this is a fun swap ... it's common sense!

You will need a 4x4 diesel donor truck for parts. Maybe one that is wrecked. Not sure if it's a good idea to use the 1500 front and rear axles on 4x4 unless you plan on not off roading too much. That Cummins has loads of torque. But actually .. the Diesel axles will probably fit too!

I'm curious I have a 98 5.2 was thinking about swapping to the 8.0 but if slapping a 12V is a direct bolt in then I wouldn't mind stepping out of my comfort zone and testing myself working with a diesel block, any info and other tips would be appreciated as well thanks, that truck is one hell of a rig sir

Drive shaft and the fuel lift bucket on the fuel tank or remove the fuel pump and modify the one you have. I had to put in a center bearing and two piece drive shaft. You will need the diesel engine under hood wiring harness which plugs into the existing harness coming from inside the cab. 3/4 or 1 ton front coil springs unless you want the front lowered! If you ever do this swap you will never want a gas truck again! The 8.0 swap will probably also need most of these mods and then suck a lot of gas where the diesel will get you 18-25 mpg depending on how heavy your foot is!

Hell, that's not bad at all , I had plans of doing a 2/4 drop of the truck to level it out anyway, I guess my biggest obstacle now is seeing if it's legal for me to do this in Texas, would be pointless if I can't register the damn thing. And I agree with the 8.0 it's a thirsty motor and doesn't have alot of options but sounds like the swap would just about be identical, minus messing with the fuel tank, I used to drive a truck for 6 years before I started climbing cell towers always wanted to buy a Cummins but I've always only worked on gas motors and wasn't sure if I trusted myself with working on desiel. But now I wouldn't mind trying this swap out it's different and badass, oh and my foot is pretty damn heavy lol. Thanks for the fast reply and info really helps alot

While the diesel will bolt right in to a 2002 .. not sure the wiring harness will plug in like the older ones! The cost would be whatever you have to spend for a diesel donor truck!

Yea the brake system is stock ... didn't change anything. The 12 valves have a vacuum pump.

@@kevindavis5311 Yes ... the diesel engine harness plugs right into the cab harness like it was made for it and like magic all the gauges work! If you want the wait to start (nonsense) light you will need to change that part in the dash. The half ton cab even has the plugged holes in the cowl to get the rear pushrods out of the diesel engine. All cabs are the same 1500-3500.

If you want to lower the front you don't even have to do that! I did have to mount a swing bearing for a two piece driveshaft! Other than that .. it's a bolt in swap! Built it in 2012 and still driving it today with no problems!

I have 95 Ram 2500 single cab with 5.9L Cummins 12v diesel and 47re original but the body cab, bed, and frame are bad shape. My 5.9L diesel and transmission are in good condition. Is will be hard to swap if I do 95 Ram 1500 extended cab??? I can’t find 2gen ram 2500 with extended cab with broken V8 or V10 in my local.

Every thing will bolt right up to the 1500 like it was made for it. Including the under hood wiring harness. You will need to have a drive shaft made or better yet use the rear out of the 2500 .. should bolt right up too. I would also use the front coil springs from the 2500 which will also fit and maybe even the front spindles. Or, you could use the 1500 cab and front cap and bed on the 2500. It's like magic.

These truck share a lot of parts with each other. The cabs and beds are the same for 1/2, 3/4, and 1 tons for each generation. There are some variations through the years. The 04.5+ Cummins use a fly wire accelerator pedal. The older ones use a cable.

Going on 11 years now with this 1500 with the 12v. I just used 3/4-1 ton coil springs up front ... direct fit. Getting your gauges to work may be a little fun though.

Hey Bob i have a 2010 Ram 1500 that has a 5.7 in it, and a 2006 Cummins 4x4, ive swapped several motors, trans etc, and want to put the cummins and trans in the 2010, do you feel like this frame and suspension would be sufficient to carry the cummins? ive got plenty of welding experience. It would tow a 16ft enclosed trailer daily as i do construction. also would i need to use my axels from the diesel? i make about 600HP.

That's probably too much HP for that 1500 frame and axles. I would keep the Cummins in that 2006 4x4. Of course you could always do it anyways and just not mash on it. LOL

@@RatRodBobBuilds Shoot! i would really love to keep it in the 06, but the body is falling apart, its got 300k on it and the amount of money to fix it wouldnt be worth it because it got lit on fire last year and totaled out, so i would be left with a rebuilt title anyhow... ive used it the last year as a pulling truck but would love the idea of this motor in the 2010 to have that body & interior for my work truck because the 5.7 sent a piston through the asphalt! as far as running that power through it, i would be keen to turning the tunes down to keep from twisting. do you feel like the front springs would handle the weight? or would it be a better option to fabricate the axels onto the 1500 frame? it almost seems like it would be easier to swap the 1500 body onto the 06 frame?

Yes but you will need a donor diesel 4x4 truck. At least you will need the engine, trans, transfer case, radiator, cooler and engine wiring harness, cpu. But it is a bolt in swap.

@@2648498 Sure, the 12v has a manual fuel pump but you'll have to rig up a regulator for the alternator. That's the only reason I even used the computer on my 12v is to simplify that. And it's possible the gasser cpu will do it .. never tried! But to be clear .. my swap was pre 1999 but it's a good chance it's the same. But I do know even the 2001 it's a bolt in swap but you may have to play with the wiring to get your stock gauges to work.

I rebuilt the front suspension(china parts) 13 years ago when I Diesel swapped it and then again last year. Yep, that engine weighs in at 1100lbs+ ... 1 ton front springs fits perfect.

@@TheErms12345 Ha ... my buddy up here told me when I built it .. "man, that rear end ain't gonna last a week"! Well, that was in 2013 and it's still hangin in there. And, that's after I installed stage two injectors, #5 fuel plate, 4k governor springs, turn the turbo up to 30 psi, 4" straight pipe and other mods. Of course I haven't ever loaded it down and thrashed on it. I do pull my car hauler with car but I drive it conservative. Unloaded , it would break the big ass 275/85 tires in third gear by just mashing on it. I have since de tuned it because the stage 3 clutch started to slip a little in high gear at full throttle. I figured I've had my fun with it so now I just use it as a driver and not a toy.

If you do some research online ... you'll find pictures and videos where folks install these Cummins diesels in everything from Monte Carlos to BMW's .. Rat Rods to old half ton trucks and everything inbetween .. never heard of one being crushed. Most states do not require older vehicles to be inspected. However, I can't speak for your state. Sometimes it's better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission!

Well lets see. I got lucky and found the truck in nice shape with the 360 gas engine for 1200 ... I paid 2500 for the diesel donor truck which had the drive train ... wiring harness CAI ... etc. had to rebuild the Cummins and of course add some mods ... may be 1300. Couple bills for paint which already fell off! Oh yea ... 200 for a stage 3 clutch .. 800 for tires ... 150 for dash cap. Probably add another 1000 for odds and ends.

you need the engine bay harness from the diesel truck or you'll have a mess.

@@chewy-bu1oy All you need to do is bolt the engine, tranny, radiator, cooler (everything under the hood of the diesel) in and use all the wiring and ecu from the diesel truck. It'll plug right into the firewall plug like the gasser did. If you want to keep the wait to start light you'll have to replace that from the diesel dash.

Ya the dash in my 96 is different from my dads 97 and the wire harness are different to

@@chewy-bu1oy That means your dads is a 97-1/2 ... they changed em halfway thru the year. The diesel versions had 12v's the first half the year and 24v's the second half. If the plugs are different on the wiring harnesses at the firewall then you'll have to get really creative. Everything else should be bolt in though.

Everything will bolt in ... not sure if the engine wiring harness will plug into the firewall. This was a 94-97 diesel stuff going in a 97 gas burner ... it's plug and play.

It's a bolt in swap ... so whatever you pay for the trucks ... I bought the half ton for 1200 and a diesel truck for 2500. Of course I rebuilt the engine and had some pump work done and stage two injectors and a stage 3 clutch ... new paint ... new tires ... etc. So you can spend as much as you want.

I used the gas tank with a diesel tank basket, not because the gas one couldn't be modified but because I had an extra diesel basket!

@@jasontompkins4341 I used the engine and trans and had to get a driveshaft made. The engine, radiator and trans from a diesel truck is a bolt in swap. I used the under hood wire harnesses from the diesel truck and they plug right in to the gas truck harnesses that come thru the firewall. But my gas truck already had the gauges with a tach ... simple as that.
