All the repairs needed on that truck are exactly why so many 10+ year old vehicles are just sent to scrap here in the northeast. Majority of people just don't want to spend $3-5K to fix their old vehicles as parts start to fail. These videos are fantastic to help diy'ers keep their older vehicles on the road. I had a customer who owned a 2003 GMC 3500 with a Duramax that he beat the daylights out of on his farm and airport. He came in and said go through the truck while he was away. We pretty much found the same issues you found on this Dodge. The bill was $6500 to get this truck repaired. So I email him the estimate and he said do all the repairs. He comes in and I go over the invoice and he said I trust you and thank you for getting the repairs done. Also had many Horse Farm owners who didn’t care what it cost and just wanted their trucks repaired.
@AKJeeper5 жыл бұрын
I've had customers do the same - they argue that the bill is easier to swallow than the payments on a new or lightly used truck...and I can't disagree with them. Sometimes it's more comforting to keep and repair something you've owned a long while (or, since new in cases of my customers), than it is to buy used with an unknown history/track record.

I see this sort of situation a lot with these big diesel work trucks. Buying one new can be $60k-$100k depending on your needs, and they hold their value in resale fairly well, especially in areas where a truck like this is more a necessity than a luxury. I've seen people drop $10k-$20k on extensive repairs without a second thought. If your tool makes you money, it's worth spending the money to keep it in good shape, especially when you know it's reliable and gets the job done! :)

We got Verus pro in the shop and it's my favorite, but it gets kinda weird when doing older OBD2 vehicles, like from 2000 or so. It likes to kick you out from the test (ex. when you force canister valve to close) after 20 seconds or so, or says there are no codes, even when "stupid" scanner for $10 that shows only the codes have no problem reading the car. Usually I borrow old scanner from one of older guys. Those things don't go further than 2005, no wireless, no touch screen, etc. But they work perfectly fine. As far as I work on cars I'm set, but like you wrote, DIY guys don't have it easy.

The APPS went in my 02 cummins and it was a long slow death. Like you noticed there would be one spot, around 20 mph, that power would dissappear. The solution was to stomp on the throttle and the truck picked up right away. It was such a random issue that I kept the APPS in the truck for about 8 months until it clearly went wonky. It was a very straightforward replacement, with the manual and no excessive force on the cables that attach to it. My 02 cummins, that was around 35k and has a lot less electronics than the new ones, shows it's age but I refuse to fork out 60-70k for a new truck too. I'll use the wife's Hondoo as a daily driver and the Dodge for trips to the dump and whatever else comes along. Love the tip that if all the lights go wonky it's a ground. I'll carry that with me the rest of my life.

Eric- on two of my own EFI cars, had the same problem. We used to call problems like these "Repetitive Motion Disease", where anything that moves wears out. You're exactly correct about that TPS. It's that "driving range" of travel that wears out. We used to see the electronic carburetors with worn throttle bushings, false air, making for rough idle and no top end. A person's wrist can have the same problem; Carpal Tunnel syndrome. I would also smoke test that engine- especially being a diesel. You wouldn't sink all that money in it- but other Folk have their rationale, too. I'd love to see you make a miniseries out of this. 30 minute parts, 15, 1 hour, whatever it takes. "Farm Truck Resurrection". Wipe out the whole laundry list. Think of it this way- your Expert labor here, will be "paying it forward"; the Customer already has the money- they just need someone competent who won't waste it on shoddy repairs, or squander. You'd make the views, real easy. Give it a good bath, Fluid Film the pig out of it for grins & giggles. Please consider this, you lucky Man.

I work for a Subaru dealer, and even with the factory scan tool, we have glitches. Ex. can't clear engine codes on 2015 and up WRX with the SSM4, we need to use the SSM3 for that

Hi Eric, I enjoy the videos very much. Thank you. I miss when you don't do the intro though. :)

I like to have all the issues fixed with my vehicles but sometimes we get so excited about the quality work performed at SMA that we forget these vehicles are not owned by us or Eric O hence why it's the customers call on what they want to repair. I wish Eric O could fix them all but sometimes it's just not in the cards. I really love bacon btw. Hmmmm bacon!

What you did to fix the lighting plug is not so bad, it's very unlikely to fail again. Cable ties / Zip ties are dam handy, designed in america and used worldwide :-D
