@leadandsteel Chrysler vehicles are not known for just oil changes. They’re good looking cars/trucks but there’s a lot stuff that breaks and fails before 150k. It’s very rare when a dodge makes it to 300k with very basic maintenance.

I just bought a 2012 1500 last weekend. So far I love it. Got a break for the "hemi tick" which was a heat shield on the header and a squeaky serpentine belt which was the cheapest easiest belt I have ever done. STRONG motor. I hope the transmission is as good as the motor.

I got my 2001 Dodge Ram in 2007, it had 74,000 miles on it. It now has 332,000 miles on it. I drive it every day to work still. Those 2nd gen Rams really lived up to the slogan. My Dodge truck is Ram tough!

I have the same truck in a 2014 version. Bought it new. Sitting at 158k on the clock. I’m still on the original brakes, and I just replaced the original battery. Pulling 21 MPG on the highway isn’t difficult. It’s been the best vehicle I’ve ever owned by a large margin. That Hemi/ZF drivetrain is a gem.

Drove my last hemi Ram 300,000 miles with 10,000 mile oil changes, never burned a drop or had a hemi tick. Traded for an Ecodiesel. 140,000 miles on the Ecodiesel, no problems. Great trucks, came from Toyotas, btw.

Was it all highway miles? If it was all highway that makes sense. Only time I've ever seen Rams go 300k without needing transmission is when they practically live on the interstate. If you put 75k Miles a year doing tons of interstate then you can hit 300k in 4 years and the truck will still seem new. Lot of miles but that's a totally different situation compared to if the truck was actually used like a truck and then got beat on and still made it to 300k and could be considered a mostly reliable truck tbh. The fact you did 10k intervals tells me you probably drove the vast majority of the time on the interstate because usually once you get off majority interstate driving they tell you not to do 10k intervals

Eco diesel is a decent engine if you get one that survives the first 50k miles. I have 175k on mine and got 21 mpg with Chrysler recall tune. Went to GDE and get 24-25 around the hills of TN. Flat Illinois I get 28-30. I change oil at 7500, Rotella T6.

Dodge total sucks, had a ram longhorn , 80k lifter seized, 4500, bucks , heated mirrors burned out, rear storage underseat broken seat wouldnt raise. Exhaust manifolds leak , total junk. Wifes 2016 durango rear light filled with water, paint sucks. Traded both for a lexus and tundra, absolutely no problems with both. Fiat has never made anything worth a crap.

I have this same truck. About to hit 100k miles. I’ve got a 5th wheel hitch on it and pulls our 30ft no problem. I’ve had 0 issues with my big orange beast, and have been lucky enough to not have the hemi tic. I’ve never seen it above 17mpg, but towing I get a consistent 12mpg. I LOVE my truck.

owned a lot of vehicles in my lifetime, 2 brands have given me nothing but headaches and stranded me along the highway more than a few times, Ford and GM/Chevy, both are junk brands, still have my 98 dakota that i bought new, it currently has 360,000 miles on it, still has original starter and alternator on it yet, only major work it has had is heater core/water pump replacement and stainless steel brake lines/hoses. I would trust my dakota to do a cross country trip more than any new ford/chevy

I love my 2016 Big Horn. Drove it 4900 miles on vacation last month, and it was getting on average 22 MPG on the highway. Can't complain about that with the HEMI.

Amen on that Hemi tick Scotty, I change my 6.4Ls oil in my scatpack every 3000 miles or 100 hours of operation and I make sure to run it as Dodge intended, hard and fast. Warm them up, run them hard, keep them adequately cooled and HEMIs are great engines.

@@erneststyczen7071 a Tesla weighs as much a an f250. I don't think weight is as big of a deal as people act like it is. The plastic fades because the suns rays degrade the cheap plastic and it yellows and fades. This is sun damage. A vehicles headlights shouldn't be able to be damaged from the sun when the vehicle costs $20,000+. They don't need to use glass but their wide industry wide acceptance of chap plastics is unacceptable when the cars are more expensive but built cheap. They have to find something else out. I'm not paying 50k for a truck with components that aren't built to survive being parked out in the sun long term. Whole industry is corrupt and all the vehicle are cookie cutter lukewarm boring endless money pits. Unacceptable. I. Will. Not. Pay.

I bought a new Ram 1500 4x4 in 2010. A guy crashed into it a month ago, and totaled it. I had 178k miles on it. Other than general maintenance, I only had two issues with it. I had to replace the alternator, and the fuel pump. Other than that, it was an absolutely wonderful truck. I was really hoping to hit 250k. But, it was parked in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Gas mileage really has improved. In the 60s I had a 3/4 ton Chevy with a 327 engine that got between 10 and 11 MPG on the highway. In the 70s I had a Mazda B1600 with a topper that got about 20 MPG on the highway. That Hemi Dodge getting 19 highway MPG is impressive.

I'm on my third Ram. They are solid trucks if you take care of them. And, yes, the Hemi just sounds so dang good. There are so many of these trucks on the road with well over 300k miles on them without a stitch of issues. Same goes for cop cars with the same drivetrain. The one weak point on the 1500's is the rear diff. Change. That. Diff. Fluid. If you don't you'll be lucky to get 100k before it starts whining.

I love my 96 RAM 4x4 and it’s still my first, only 230k miles but I take care of it. My only complaint is the dash which turned to rubble. That one hurts. I’m still saving up for a replacement.

I worked at a chrysler dealer as a trans tech and I can tell you with over 50 years experiance those zf transmissions are not so great.I just retired last year but all I did all day long was trouble shoot and repair those zf transmissions.I even worked with engineering to find out about ongoing issues with them.They had cases that would leak due to bad castings,c clutches that would not release right and cause a bad jerk and on and on.And the front drive 9 speeds were even worse.

Still driving my 2004 Dodge ram 1500 long bed quad cab, the transmission kicks hard and second and third it's amazing absolutely no engine leaks and no transmission leaks over 100k miles used to get 22 miles to gallon on the California freeways at 70 mph, but not anymore maybe 16 on the highway 10 in the city.

I bought a 2014 laramie a couple of years ago with 117,000 miles on the clock and now it's turning 150,000 miles this month. I have taken care of her religiously, oil changes, tire rotations, tune ups, everything and she drives like a champ. My only problem with this truck has been the water leak in the cab, no matter what I have done when it rains really hard I always find water in the back of the cab, something I didn't know was a common problem with these trucks before I bought it, but I like this truck so much that I can handle it. I ended up buying a large cover and when I know it's going to rain I just cover it up. That is all. I also had the exhaust leak problem a while back (also common), but fixed it right away and it's been gone ever since. Nice video Scotty, like always, and nice truck too!

5W20 motor oil is to thin for the 5.7 hemi. A high pressure oil pump (milodon or melling) will help keep enough oil at the top of the motor especially during idling so cam and lifters live on.

Scotty, I'm a RAM guy. I have a 2013 RAM 1500 4 X 4 Laramie Longhorn edition. I bought it used with 66K about 3 years ago. This truck had every option available at the time. It's as clean as they come. I do change the oil every 5K with full synthetic oil. It looks new and I just turned 100K. Runs great, looks great, I've towed our 30' trailer from state to state. Couldn't ask for a better truck!

That's right even Scotty kilmer has to give credit where credits due. The 8 speed transmissions have been bulletproof since their introduction in the RAM truck. And I maintain hemi engine is one of the more reliable units. Capable of 23 miles per gallon on the highway at 70 miles per hour. Best riding truck in his class world-renowned interior and still discounted 10% off sticker price to this day. The choice is easy for anyone who's reading this. Forget about the construction worker square truck and forget about the bow tie.

@@dingusmann3003 4.7l dodge Dakota 2004-2006 are good trucks from my experience I’ve had 2 2005 1500s one with a 5 speed auto 258k miles and 6 speed manual 185k miles and both have been great to me zero issues. Otherwise go with a ranger or older Toyota truck it will never let you down.

I agree, take care of your vehicle it WILL last longer. My 1978 Dodge Diplomat lasted 14 years! 318 V8, I put 1.2 million miles on the engine before I sold it to a young man who was going to rebuild the engine + bodywork. Other than normal repairs, brakes tuneup Etc, the transmission rebuilt once.

My 2014 Ram 1500 with the 3.6L engine and 8 spd trans I got 32 mpg on a trip from Monona, Wisconsin to Bailey, NC with my mom along for the ride. Great truck!

You nailed it Scotty, the hemi engines are great power plants as long as they didn’t sit around and idle and starve the cam and lifters of oil. My dad has an 06 hemi and it sounds like new yet, cause it doesn’t sit and idle.

@@julio_6183 nah that’s a myth. If you change oil properly it gets oil the moment it starts over, the best thing to do is drive it and get it warm. Just keep the rpm low. Don’t smash the gas in a cold vehicle

I do oil changes every 3000, use high quality oil, and run a quart of Lucas full synthetic. This should keep it strong for many years to come.

I’m a JDM guy for life. However with great recent turnaround in reputation and solid quality trucks to market…. Ram is the only truck I’m actually considering buying next. I’m not convinced that new Tundra was worth the wait.

Ram has upped their game in reliability big time. I'm the 2nd owner of a 2014 Ram with the Pentastar V6. Bought it 3 yrs ago. It's now at 279K miles. Great mileage

Father’s last car, a 94 Ciera, is a solid performer. Consistent oil changes from day one, a mere 144 K miles, transmission fluid and filter changes, and driven little. It had an electrical issue years ago, which was fixed with a new wiring harness from the computer to the engine. Most ended up in the junkyard due to a $25 wiring harness. Still a great little car.

The 5.7 Hemi in the Dodge Charger Pursuit (police car) seems to have some camshaft issues. Probably because of long idle time.

Yep..the cam issue is super common with fleet vehicle, especially police vehicles as they idle almost as much as they drive.

My 16 ram 1500 big horn 4x4 crew cab hemi is going to get a new engine before I get rid of it. I love how it drives, sounds, looks, everything. Also: the hemis tick brand new. Injectors on these things are LOUD.

I had a 2002 town and country with a 3.8v6 hemi. Lasted me until 378k miles, still had life in it too when I junked it. Only issue was the suspension and I wanted something nicer

3.3 and 3.8 minivan engines were super tough, chain motors, no timing belts in those. 300k plus miles, easy.

I didn't know these had an idling problem. My 06 Magnum RT I let idle for many hours right after our daughter was born and my father in law was in the hospital. We didn't want to take the newborn in so one of us sat in the wagon for hours as the other visited. Once i turned it off to save gas but the baby woke up, she liked the rumble of the Hemi! Nine years ago, the kid is big and my father in law is doing great as well! Oh and I still got the Magnum, no hemi tick! Synthetic Napa oil every 4000 miles.

I used to have an 03 ram, I liked it. My complaints was 10 gal per mile mpg, radiators and heater cores would pop. Other than that I wished I could handle those things

My 2012 ram 1500 is 10 years old 125000 miles the truck has never broken down The only issues I had were the hoses and clamp quality I had to replace transmission lines and radiator clamps Last month I replaced the passenger cv axle and the exhaust manifold is leaking a little but I think it's acceptable for a 10 year old truck

Its a company called ZF they arguably make the best automatic transmissions on the market. in pretty much every dodge, jeep, bmw, audi, and many more they have even been put in some toyotas.

@@whitegoodman7465 Those JATCOs were the CVTs found on Calibers Patriots and 1st Compass. They haven't been used by Chrysler for more than 5 years. But most of their RWD vehicles either use a ZF or in-house designed transmission

My 2015 Ram 1500 5.7, is the best truck I ever owned. It pulls my 24 foot camper with no issues , and it has plenty of power. It’s never been in the shop. Years ago I had a 04 gmc it was in the shop before 36,000 miles ..with A.C. Issues , and loss of engine power ….lol.. no more of those for me..

Dodge/Chrysler has made some solid engines in the past (5.9 Cummins, 5.7 Hemi). Their Achilles heal is always their crappy electronics that wear out early.

Scotty what are your thoughts about the parts shortage? I sell parts at a Chrysler Dodge Jeep and Ram dealership... And getting parts for customers, mechanics, and shops is a NIGHTMARE!! Can't even get our hands on basic parts such as fuel filters, air filters, and cabin filters! Every other dealership I talk to is going through the same thing and it only seems to be getting worse!!!

I have a 2015 Big Horn just like that one without so much bling, more like box stock. 163k miles and runs like a top and everything works perfectly. Gets close to 21 mpg highway at 70. I almost always drive highway, so I just change the oil when the monitor gets to about 10%. Still drives like new.

Have a 2005 Ram 1500 2wd with the 5.7 hemi. Best truck I've ever owned. Sitting on 212k miles and counting. I get around 16 mpg, 14.5 towing, and right at 18 highway. These numbers have been the same since day one. Not sure if its true but mine was made at the factory in Missouri which i have heard is the best plant to get one from.... Original owner and she still looks pretty good, although showing age now of course.

I have a 2009, I'm the only owner. Has a life time warranty. 227000 miles runs like new and still gets good gas mileage (2WD). I follow all maintenance requirements.

I have a 2011 Ram 1500 with Hemi 5.7. My lifter had a bad tick at 108k. Dealer couldn't diagnose the issue but somehow the tick turned into a terrible knock at the dealership. I took it to a private mechanic who diagnosed a seized roller lifter which required a new engine. Probably idled it too much.

I must disagree with Scotty on the muffler issue......it does muffle sound but it creates vital back pressure for performance curve........no muffler and low/no actual back pressure will lead to odd valve wear and other valve train issues......I rarely dispute anything Scotty says because he is THE MAN.

Scotty I watch your videos all the time. you are awesome and a legend in your own right! Very nice truck. I have one similar. I get about 20 mpg on highway and maybe 16 city. Love it tho, does exactly what I need it to do. The only thing I don’t like about it is the turn dial transmission but hey once it’s in gear you forget that it’s a problem.

The zf does get annoying in hilly areas. Mine always wants to go in and out of 8th gear going 50-60 through hills. The trucks are nice but are getting built worse. I can pull my window switch out when I roll up both windows at the same time. Just Chrysler/Fiat things.

The nwer Hemi's were the engine to have IF you were going to be buy a Dodge gas truck (the older ones I think had some issues but the newer ones seem to be reliable). I mean even our non-hemi 2010 Ram 1500 made it to 215k with very little problems overall. Needed some minor stuff here and there but nothing major like an engine rebuild (I think the worst was broken exhaust bolts on both sides so about $700 to fix those).

The vast majority of Rams have the ticking engine due to broken manifold bolts not the cam. I had two replaced the manufacturer used weak, defective bolts. No recall of course.
