In this video I have a look at a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins that came in with a short list of things that stopped working. They include but are not limited to the radio, intermittent wipers, the power seat, dash lights, marker lights, and dome lights. Customer told me it had been a long time sense they last worked. -Enjoy!

I am one of those guys who likes the mysteries of 12vdc circuitry. I have a friend who knows household wiring, but has a very hard time with automotive electric. The one that came to mind when watching this video is way back in the early eighties. A lady brought her little Ford to the station with headlight trouble. Before me, some genius had run a 12ga wire from the back of the left headlight, through the engine compartment, out the corner of the hood, in through the door opening and into the fusebox. Holy crap! Anyway, I took Dr, Frankenstein's pigtail out and began the diagnosis. It was a bit odd. Turn on the headlights and they were on high beam and wouldn't switch to low, despite the switch physically operating normally. The switches in those cars are extremely durable and it wasn't a very old car. I decided to unplug the headlights and see what happened with the switch. Voilà. The switch still did the same, but now, the high beam indicator on the dash would go off and on with the switch actuations. I plugged in the passenger side bulb and it functioned normally. I plugged in the driver's side bulb and the malfunction came back. I checked the circuits at the plug and they were also normal. That put the problem inside the sealed beam bulb. I put in a new bulb and the system was fixed. We charged an hour of labor and the price of the bulb. The lady was ecstatic that first, I was able to find out what was actually wrong and second, that the dire predictions from the previous actors were totally out in left field. Mostly, she was happy that our cost was so low. Labor rate was much lower then and the bulb was about $7 as I recall. It was the larger sized rectangular sealed beam that functioned as both high and low beam with two filaments. What had happened is that one filament broke at the stem and the end fell onto the other filament, crossing the circuits inside the bulb. I showed her the bulb and what to look for. She took it with her to go get her money back from the other guy. I had another job there in which the main mechanic screwed a customer who ended up stuck about twenty miles from the station. I took the tow truck and retrieved the stalled dually pickup truck and brought to back to the station. I spent three hours in the night, diagnosing and fixing the problem that slapped the mechanic in the face, yet he chose to ignore it. Bad rocker switch on the dash that switched fuel tanks and gauges. Dipshit put a new fuel pump on the engine and when it didn't pump fuel, he added fuel to the empty tank. Two and a half gallons, enough to get into the downtown area of Phoenix. I found the defective switch and since I told the customer I would do everything I could to fix his truck, I pulled the switch apart and corrected the problem with the internal contacts, fixing it, rather than waiting to get a new one from the dealer. I also covered for the idiot which led to me being able to humiliate him when discussing the situation with the boss.

Eric truly like the way you have been explaining very clearly the use of the electrical schematics. Have been teaching myself how to read and understand them but its nice to see you use them and know that how I'm interpreting them is correct. Worked with mechanical prints my whole life but am now very interested in electrical schematics because of today's automotive complexities. I have the tools just need to improve my understanding and you are a big help. thanks much.❤️️

It helps that Chrysler listened to the techs quite a few years ago and made the wiring diagrams a lot simpler and easier to read and understand. Basically, the power source is at the top, and the grounds are at the bottom. The diagrams also have clickable links, clicking on a connector will give you options like connector view, pinout view, etc. So much easier and quicker than having to search thru everything to find what you're looking for.

This made me smile. Several years ago my son bought a used '99 3500 with "previous owner extra wiring". That very same fuse was the issue and the behavior of the foglamp-indicator was my clue. His truck's fuse was not missing however; it was "partially blown". What I mean by that is low-current functions worked but nothing high current. The fuse had become an intermittent high resistance short. I am really enjoying your content.

For DIY repair info & wiring diagrams, also check you local library. Many of them already have paid subscriptions to the professional repair information that Eric mentions in this video. Some library's allow people to log in from home to get this information, while other libraries require you come to their location to use those repair databases (really depends on who they have their subscriptions thru and what their terms-of-use are for library users). If your local library does not have any access to current repair information, then put in a request that they add it.

I remember back in 2007, my 1995 Jeep Cherokee developed a strange issue. My headlights would work but the running lights and dash lights would not unless I gradually eased the headlight switch to the "sweet" spot in between the headlights and marker lights position. I replaced the headlight switch to no avail, and warrantied it out at least twice more, continually believing that the headlight switch was to blame. It turned out that the fuse for the running lights had blown, and that the headlights run off of circuit breakers as a fail safe! For some reason, having the head light switch positioned just right in-between headlights and marker lights allowed the marker lights to grab power off of the headlight's circuit breakers as well.

I had a friend bring me his 2004 Mercury Mountaineer. It had been to a local shop, his headlights weren't working. They quoted him a hefty price for the directional / high beam wand , which was visibly broken. He was low on cash and the truck had a lot of mileage. So I got a cheapo Chinese replacement from E Bay. Installed it, it was an easy 15 minute job, and the head lights still weren't working. Upon checking the fuse, which was one of those box types, I discovered it was missing. Apparently they forgot to put it back.

With multiple loads on multiple circuits, common power and body ground from the battery would have been my first thought, fuses would be next, ignition switch and its controlled aux relay(s) third and fourth. I can't imagine a short sufficient to make a 50A fuse evaporate. My guess is when making one those badly done extra wire mods, the fuse was temporarily removed and plugged into an unused soccket. For DIYers, one vehicle-specific factory shop manual typically costs less than a month of Mitchell service.

Every time I catch a job like that, I look around for the hidden camera. Had one just yesterday. Guy’s waiting for the shop to open, it’s 15 degrees outside and the drivers window is half-open and won’t close. I bring it inside and find none of the windows work from any of the switches. I pull out the master switch to start my diag and find the connector is unplugged. I plug it back in, it locks into place securely and *BOOM* everything works! I couldn’t see how it could unplug itself, so I start looking around for the camera. My shop uses Mitchell and I absolutely HATE it! One would think, if you’re paying a monthly subscription fee, the information would be better/more complete. Mitchell is the Scotty Kilmer of automotive information.

If ya got room for a couple 4 dome mirrors, put them up so u can see your corners. As you and i know sometimes vehicles have left and right control circuitry. As i would run directly to fuse blocks with a simple scope on a rope. You you have taught me such awesome diag tips that i use in my personal repair world. Happy holidays to you and your family. @Cheepchipsable

It's a simple thing you can do quickly. The real problem starts when the fuse keeps blowing, but at least it narrows down the circuit. Sometimes fuses do blow, they would have a lifespan or are simply poorly made, but they shouldn't blow on a regular basis. Can't agree with the "missing fuses are common" argument, because these fuses are clearly marked, and are dedicated, not like a panel which has no guide to follow. Sometimes people remove a fust to turn something off that won't switch off like it should. Had a car where the radio didn't work - discovered missing fuse only to discover that the radio would now not turn off. turns out it had a faulty on/off switch on the radio itself.

This is why my dad has a 1994 and 1999 ford explorer. The '94 has the type of problems you'd expect (AC, Suspension wear, brakes and brake lines(lines were replaced in October and pads in November). The fuel pump I think is starting to fail because it doesn't want to fire, just crank, but it starts more than not and it runs like a champ. It has ~127,000 miles and has never had an engine issue. It's just more worn is all.

That's weird. I looked at a Toyota Avensis ex-taxi which had, had the "Dome" fuse pulled which disabled most of the accessories. In that case though its because whoever had modified the wiring had made a hash of it and some spliced wiring was grounding on a metal part in the dash and blowing the fuse constantly. I'm just impressed anything electrical still works on a 99 Dodge.

I hope that’s a proper fusible link! It should very well be, and they are used on circuits that are allowed or expected to have very high loads for a short period of time, for example both the thermo fans in my car are on fusible links. Fusible links can be denoted by having a big old nugget of metal in the middle of them under a window. I’m sure you know this as a mechanic but I just thought I’d mention this for other folks. You need to put a fusible link in if that’s what came out, because if you just stick a fuse in there, it’ll constantly trip although there is nothing actually wrong with the circuit.

If Eric O., Scotty Kilmer, ChrisFix, Engineering Explained, or any of the great car KZbinrs were in KZbin Rewind I probably would've been okay with it. Then again, I'm glad they weren't invited to partake in that mess.

Excellent video, Mr.O. I appreciate your approach to diag electrical issues. Sad that integrity seems to be in short supply these days.

Criticism? I am simply amazed by your talents and logical approach towards working on vehicles. If the owner takes that truck to another mechanic, trust me the first thing would be to pull the dash out or spicing wires!! Also saw how you found an electrical error (no power to cam sensor) on a Chevy van. Thank you!

Based on the amount of rust and age of that truck, that wouldn't hurt

Had a Yukon about a month ago where none of the running lights were working. Noticed it was a handicap equipped car, so that the driver could drive entirely with their hands. Checked the fuse. No power. Pulled the diagram to see where the fuse was powered from, and found a relay. Went to go check the relay and found it was missing. Swapped a relay in from another spot and the lights all came on.

Seeing the extra wiring, hanging here and there, I think that I would have opened the fuse box first thing for a visual. Often, people will just find some power, wherever, and jam the wire in with it. Bad move! Of course that may not have helped in this case because it was missing entirely.

Either someone took that fuse from them, or one of the other fuses blew with all those aftermarket accessories and them or their fleet tech was like "Oh, you don't need a battery fuse, the battery already has power!"

This really has nothing to do with the video, but I'm curious. Have you thought about doing any lab scope "tutorial" type videos. For example, what sample rate and time basis to use for a given scenario, trigger usage, etc? I'd love to start using on (got a lead on a BRAND new Vantage), but have had trouble in the past actually setting scopes up for measurements I want to take. I think a lot of us would like to see this type of content!

At 5:19, you are checking F1 with the Power Probe. I believe you were mistaken when you said that both sides of the fuse showed ground. It was actually 0 volts, not ground.

I usually use alldata myself you can buy per vehicle or get the unlimited monthly or annual fee. I havent had a problem with their diagrams yet, however I'm not looking at nearly the number of cars you do. thanks for the video. I'm sure I'm not the first to say we could watch you do the same old stuff over and over. why? because is it ever really exactly the same? especially in salt country. take care bud. and have a merry christmas.
