My '67 Cuda has a 340 LA engine w/727 TF trans, "hemi" bands and internals(just RV spec HD parts), always set both lo-reverse and high bands when servicing to the 426 hemi specs, according to the trans builder who set this unit up. This car leaves about 30 ft. of rubber on a full throttle 1-2 shift as well, thanks to some good valve body mods and line pressure adjustment. Excellent tutorial, many newer transmissions are all electronically controlled and not as many folks are aware of mechanical adjustments these days!

Yep, this was one of the last transmissions with bands to adjust. I find it hilarious that to make it a 4spd trans they just took a 3spd trans and bolted another gear on the back of it! 😅

Thank you for the info. I am going to try this, but I also have a couple other problems. I have a 2006 Ram 3500 with 110k miles. In addition to the problem you described, when I attach a trailer around 5000 pounds and start driving out of my driveway which is at a slight incline, it really struggles like a massive load is on it and in about 15 seconds the special overheat light shows up. I let it cool and after I start driving regularly and the transmission is actually warmed up, it seems fine. I also notice that after it sits for a couple days and I put it in drive it takes a while before it will start driving forward. Thank you for the help!
@ReignitedAuto2 жыл бұрын
The issue where if it sits for a couple days and it takes awhile to start moving is actually completely normal, Chrysler actually gives an allowance of up to 6 seconds if you can believe that! As to your first issue, first thing I'd be looking at is the trans fluid level and condition. If the fluid is low at all that'll definitely contribute to this problem. But if the fluid is blackand smells bad then you're likely looking at a rebuild soon. 👍
@MakersAcres2 жыл бұрын
@@ReignitedAuto Wow, 6 seconds that seems crazy. It just feels like it has been getting worse over the years. I have been changing that oil about every 15,000 miles. It still seems fine, but it is on the lower side. I did find a TSB for a bad Solenoid valve which causes some shift hunting which I do experience. When I do this I was thinking of getting one of those deep machined aluminum pans. Do you like those? Thanks again!
@ReignitedAuto2 жыл бұрын
@@MakersAcres good find on that TSB, it most often happens under very light acceleration that it'll kind of hunt between first and second gear. Note: along with the pressure solenoid also replace the pressure transducer (pressure sensor). It's right three next to the solenoid, they are fairly cheap to replace and they also contribute to the issue. As for deep pans, I actually don't like them at all. Ostensibly their purpose is to add extra fluid so you don't overheat the stock fluid amount, but I just don't think they make a huge difference, not to mention you are now spending a bunch more on fluid, and they make it hard to know howmuch fluid to add after a service. And they usually leak like crazy too because people over tighten the crappy cork or rubber gasket they come with.

Your other videos had me nervous about cam but i dont have any noise and some days it will drive all day without reproducing. Only a stumble at idle only when code is thrown. Think i am going to try switching injectors first because while it stumbles at idle i can unplug the coil on cyl 8 and still gets noticeably worse. Thank you so much! While "15 minutes" is a bit optimistic for an old fat guy crawling around under a truck, the adjustment still worked for my 2004 RAM 2500 with about 138K miles. It was kind of hanging in 2nd, especially under even mildly agressive acceleration, such as a freeway entrance ramp. I found that from underneath, I could either reach the adjuster or see the adjuster, but not both, so I did it kinda half by feel. Also my particular little digital torque wrench was not readable from that angle, but it has a peak hold, so I could tighten, read the peak, tighten, read the peak, etc, until I reached 72 in/lb.

Its 4th downshifting to third for mine. Whenever im going around 55mph-70mph and just cruising along and need to accell it likes to hold fourth and like slip some and accelerate very lazy instead of downshifting if you try to accel normal. But if you give it a bit more throttle more aggressively on the first initial acceleration it will wake it up down shift and accel so much faster and easier in the correct lower gear.

The 65 is actually a pretty solid trans, my only advice would be to make sure you're doing trans services every 30k miles, and I mean actually dropping the pan and replacing both filters. And make sure you're actually using the tow/haul mode if you're towing. Most common failure I saw is the overdrive is kind of weak, and will burn up easy if you are towing and not using the tow strategy. 👍

Speed was 65 to 70 max, not driving hard and only additional weight was the regular old campershell. Got off highway and just took side streets to get home. Turn on next morning with cold engine in park. Dash light of od flashes on and off as well as light for tranny overheating. Any suggestions. Looked at mine and it seems previous owner screwed the stud in flush and then welded, or jb welded the lock nut to the stud since it couldn't thread on... So How much would this be roughly for someone to rebuild? Would it be cheaper to just get a new one and put it in myself? Was supposed to be a rebuilt stage 3 trans in it, not sure if the guy was lying. 2006 Cummins
@ReignitedAuto3 ай бұрын
I hate hearing about sketchy stuff that was done like that, sorry to hear your having to deal with it. The tricky part is that if you remove that stud entirely there's a fork that falls out of place and you'll have to remove the valve body to put it back in. It's not that tricky to do, but if you don't feel confident doing so I would absolutely take it to a shop. That being said, if the stud is already turned in so far it's flush with the case then it's likely due for a rebuild anyway. Sorry I don't have better news.

Thanks for any help you can pass on and yes your white board description gave me a perfect visual of how the mechanism worked.
@ReignitedAuto2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the 545 is a completely different architecture, and this tip won't apply. What gears specifically are you having issues with?
@PJM4542 жыл бұрын
Not exactly sure if it is all of them or just the lower gears as it is not insured right now. When I did do some research on it, from the videos I watched it seemed like the issue was the clutch plates worn out. It makes a bit of a groaning noise while driving it normally on the flat ground but when I kicked the throttle down to go up a hill, the RPM's would jump up to 5000 plus but it would not have the power for that high of RPM's. This was last summer and I figured at the time it needed a rebuild but would probably be cheaper to look for a used rebuilt transmission which seem difficult to find right now for some reason beyond me. I live in BC, Canada but seem to only find rebuilt online in the US. Any suggestions on the best root of wether this is a rebuild or a cheaper fix? Thanks for listening to my ramble.

Ya, that's kind of a classic issue with those trucks. The drain back valve in the torque converter starts leaking back down when the engine is off so it takes a little bit to fill the torque converter back up when you first start it. A good way to check this is to let it sit overnight them check the fluid level before starting it. Normally it will be above the full mark when not running, but if the converter is leaking back it'll be way up the stick. Unfortunately the only fix is a new torque converter. Chrysler actually has a specification for this that says anything up to 6 seconds before the vehicle moves is normal! 😄

What would cause the newer 8 speed transmission to do this on a 2015 ram 1500? Mostly slips on cold take off.
@ReignitedAuto3 жыл бұрын
I have to say, that's pretty rare. You don't normally see slipping issues with the 8spd trans it's a really solid trans overall. I would say if you are experiencing slippage on cold take offs, definitely check your fluid level first. If it's low by a fair amount you'll experience slipping. If you need any info on how to check it let me know. 👍

My truck dodge ram 2004 3 and 4 gears jumping any advice please
@ReignitedAuto2 жыл бұрын
Best advice I can give is there might be an issue with the overdrive unit. On your teams the overdrive is a separate housing that bolts to the back of the trans, inside that unit there's a small ring that likes to fracture into a bunch of pieces, if it comes apart enough then the clutch discs will get burned up and it'll have trouble holding 4th gear. One situation anyway. Unfortunately it requires disassembly to verify.

Hey I wanted to add the gear to gear shifting in this transmission is firm not too quick , not slow and sloppy. The manual shifting is just fine like it's always been I just can't get first every time and drive it tries to take off in second gear. When I'm in a light I can feel something downshifting I think cuz you're not feels like there's more torque in the truck wants to creep forward. But when I go it's still not in first gear.

I have experienced this in a chevy with an Allison trans before. Check your trans fluid level, if it's low you could run into a situation where the trans fluid sloshes to one side of the pan or another and temporarily loses prime. Sounds dumb, but it could very well be causing your issue. 👍

Mine is a 2006 and it shifts slowly. If I go into reverse it's about 5 seconds before it catches gear. Then I stop and go to second and also a few seconds. If I hit the gas before it catches it kind of jerks.

Trans fluid changed every 16 20 k it slips under moderate load and tries to skip 2nd gear all together. Slightly burned fluid recently. The truck has 122k on it and has seldom been driven without hauling a trailer of at least 2000 pounds behind it any info would be great.

Not sure what gear it is but that is my highway gear I guess. 2200rpm @70mph. I feel it shifting only twice never goes over 1700rpms if driving easy on the pedal. Thanks for your video , I'm having issues with the 46RE in Dodge Ram 1500 , code trip is P1740 error in tcc or O/D solenoid . Truck is not shifting from first gear and slips out of first gear and just revs like it's in neutral while I drive it . I researched and thought I found the solution - replace the TCC solenoid but when I dropped the pan there's a piece of what looks like a ring on the magnet . I stopped the job . Are you able to help figure this out ? Thank you
@ReignitedAuto Жыл бұрын
That's an older problem we don't see much of anymore. If it's what I'm thinking, the ring you are seeing is part of the overdrive clutch snap ring. The snap ring fractures into several pieces until they are small enough to fall out. At this point overdrive can no longer engage. Only fix is to remove the overdrive unit from the back of the trans, which can be done with the trans still in the vehicle. Once out, you'll have to install a new snap ring, and it can be tricky to reassemble the overdrive unit properly. If you don't get all the clutch plates aligned properly it won't go back onto the trans properly.

I have a 2012 300c v8 .5.7 it didn’t take the 3rd nor the 4th gear when i floor it and the engine light would start flashing while that slip is happening and keeps going for few seconds after. Recently I rebuilt the engine, and that transmission issue just disappeared for no apparent reason 😂 I wish I can understand what happened. Any ideas ?
@ReignitedAuto3 жыл бұрын
I have a pretty good guess. The issue was actually the engine the whole time. Sounds like the engine was misfiring badly, thus the CEL flashing, and when this happens the engine cannot generate the RPM necessary to tell the trans to shift. I've seen it happen on older cummins powered trucks, the fuel filter becomes so restricted that the engine won't RPM enough to shift. Could be an option anyway...
