Back in the day the rock picker was ME and Dad would sit on the tractor pulling the hood of an old car with a chain. Things have come a long way since then. Good job on getting that big one off the field.

I've always joked to my wife that we sprout rocks in our yard and get them started off and grown up to fist size. Then can be shipped on to growers who put them out in their fields to grow up to full size. Now I know where that happens. Nice rock harvest there, Carl.

That rock-picker is a great machine. Can you imagine (I'd guess you can :) ) picking up those big rocks by hand? Do you keep track of how many rocks you get from each field? Does it ever start slacking off, or will you get new rocks for thousands of years?
@samkom332 жыл бұрын
It depends a bit where you live! if you have just 1 winter each year ore no winter your lucky, stones dont rise very fast. But if you live in say a coastal area that have several freezing periods and also periods of wet rainy weather, stones can rise fast. becouse when water under the rocks freeze the stone gets lifted a bit and when it unfreeze,, the earth under the rock can shift so the stone cant fall back.. So it rise a bit every freezing period.

Over in Matteson Illinois they are leveling Farm fields to make a new Trucking terminal and I notice about 12 or 15 big boulders that they've collected and put off to the side that they must have dug up

Great video. Those seed companies sure do like to put a lot rock seed in their seed🤣. It only takes a year to grow them. What do yall do with the rock piles? Do you try to reuse them in a water way that is eroding? Do you try to get rid of them at a quarry that crushes them? I'm glad you got those rocks out of the fields. That could have been very bad on the equipment. Hope you had a Happy Easter. Take care and be careful. Already looking forward to more videos every week and the surprise.
@dodgebrothersfarmandranch92063 жыл бұрын
Thanks David! We do use some of them to fill in gullies and stop erosion but most of them just get piled up. Want some?!
@robertpautsch50933 жыл бұрын
I am trying to wrap my head around that big rock just appearing. Did it get heaved up over the winter? I cannot imagine something that big arising from the deep in a few months. Do those rocks in the pile ever get used for anything? Great tease at the end. I am sitting on the edge of my recliner awaiting the big announcement.
@superchuck32593 жыл бұрын
Yep the frost heaves them up. They can damage equipment so once on surface, best to get them picked up. The rocks make good ditch fill. Also some folks can sell them if they get enough. If you look at historical barns, you can see the foundations being made from the picked rocks. Literally living off the land. Wood and stone for the buildings from the land you farmed!
@robertpautsch50933 жыл бұрын
@@superchuck3259 What I was struggling with is a rock that big literally heaved in just one season. That is impressive
@dodgebrothersfarmandranch92063 жыл бұрын
There are many rocks lurking just below the surface and we drag some up every year when we chisel plow in the fall. The frost heaves them upward just slightly each year but we will roll them up on the surface with the fall tillage pass. That big one got pushed out of an old terrace with a dozer last fall after the crop was out.

I have a question; If you pick up rocks each year from these fields, why do you keep finding new rocks? Wouldn't you find less and less rocks each year? And where was that BIG rock during harvest last year? Wouldn't it have cause some problems? I hope this is not a stupid question, just wondering.... By the way, great video!!
@dodgebrothersfarmandranch92063 жыл бұрын
Thanks rob! Not a dumb question at all! There are many rocks lurking just below the surface and we drag some up every year when we chisel plow in the fall.
