I am Japanese and can read/view direct Japanese sources. According to the NHK documentary "Close-Up" aired in Japan yesterday, Sasaki experienced an elbow discomfort in his first spring training as a pro at age 18, and Lotte Marines shut him down for the whole year. Meanwhile, he sought for a treatment and was initially advised to have a TJ surgery. However, the follow up found no damage in elbow, rather, he had a shoulder problem that caused a nerve pain in his elbow. They went on to fix his shoulder, medically cleared him and Sasaki pitched a perfect game (and 8 additional innings) two years later at age 20. In the Q&A section with Japanese reporters yesterday, he was asked why he had rushed to come to the US. He answered that the next two years he would spend with Dodgers would be more valuable to him than extra (hundreds of millions of) dollars he would have received by delaying the process. His rational seems to be that two years of wait could be too much of a risk for him to take, after his elbow worry in the first year made him realize that his career could be derailed at any moment. Time is indeed money, to him.

Every MLB pitcher takes a chance with injury. He's no different, being young gives him a better chance at recovery & prolonging a career when suffering any sort of injury and or prolonged discomfort.

@@theophilussparks5839better to take his chances with the Dodgers then over his once home team because the Dodgers practice “strategic pitching management” or whatever you want to call it. Both Yamamoto and Sasaki will be allowed 7 days rest and of course monitoring. Other teams can’t afford 7 days rest between games. Part of investing and committing 12 years to Yamamoto “and” allowing him 7 days rest between starts is to demonstrate how much the Dodgers believe in their strategy. In other words, if a pitcher has high velocity and/or high spin rate then they place high value in this. It paid off and worked too. Yamamoto was available for post season and pitched well. This formula can only work if the franchise have a deep talent of pitchers which of course the Dodgers do. There are pitchers who don’t have the high velocity and/or highest spin rate. They are effective pitchers though who can last many innings to get a team through the regular season. Gavin Stone/Landon Knack types. The Dodgers/Roberts don’t plan to take a next best man approach for the regular season. This is what most MLB teams have to do. The Dodgers can potentially win 90+ games with a starting pitching line up that has: 1. Snell 2. Yamamoto 3. Tony Gonsolin 4. Bobby Miller 5. Justin Wrobleski / Landon Knack 6. Ohtani/Bullpen. At least for a period of time they can. Just need the top guys like Glasnow, Sasaki, and May in post season.

@@theophilussparks5839 It seems to me that his worst fear was to blow up his elbow in next two years, and his MLB debut, which has always been his lifetime dream, will be significantly delayed or derailed. When he realized he had already become the sought-after figure by MLB teams, he couldn’t wait to start the only career that mattered to him as early as possible. By coming now, he will also add two years of his peak years to his MLB career numbers, which may influence his eventual candidacy to HOF, for example. This may sound too far fetched right now, but Sasaki said during the press conference that his decision to join the Dodgers now could only be evaluated at the end of his career. For someone whose stated goal is to become the best pitcher on the planet and when Baseball America ranks him as #1 prospect, maybe it’s within his thought. Meanwhile, I pray for his sustained health.

Yeah, the guy will probably put on a good 10-15 pounds of muscle to help with the increased number of games MLB has compared to the NPB. It will help to maintain his frame because he does have a big frame.

Before coming here, Sasaki’s worst nightmare was possibly to blow up his elbow in the next two years and then his MLB debut, his lifetime dream, would be significantly delayed or derailed. When he realized that he had achieved enough in NPB to obtain the sought-after status by MLB teams to the degree that he is now the #1 ranked prospect by BA, he could no longer wait to start the only career that mattered to him. Also, coming now will add two peak years to his career numbers, which could influence his MLB legacy, including his potential HOF candidacy. Sasaki actually said during the press conference that his decision to join Dodgers now can be evaluated only at the end of his career. For someone whose reported goal is to become the best pitcher on the planet, thinking ahead that much would not be so far fetched. Meanwhile, I pray for his sustained health.
