Great vid. Minus the T-cut and use of a pressure washer, this video is my exact car-cleaning regimen circa 1997! My parents thought I was mad for using anything more exotic than washing up liquid and a gritty old brush kept on the floor of the garage, until my nana suggested I give mum's old Fiat Uno a polish before she traded it in and I added £500 to the trade-in value with nothing more than an afternoon's elbow grease and a bottle of Autoglym SRP. I still love walking past a car and catching a whiff of SRP - my neighbours' kids are old enough to drive now and are shining up their old motors like I used to, and no-one has more pride in their car than a 17 year-old petrolhead!!! :-)

Seems like a couple of your complaints had less to do with the product and more to do with user error; such as wiping the over spray up with the chamois, which is not what it was made for. I haven't used a chamois in years but what I remember being good about them is that you can keep wringing them out and they keep absorbing but with a towel once it gets really wet, even wringing them out still causes a snail trail of water while you are trying to dry. You do admit that you applied the polish in direct sunlight, again the directions, so at least I will give you credit for owning up to it.

I use that tar remover in the blue bottle, it works for me. I also use the T-Cut in the red bottle, however it is important to follow the instructions, plus I'm not sure really how effective it is. It is probably a very mild cutting compound so designed not to cause paintwork damage when applied by the average motorist. With the T-Cut, it is pointless using it on sunny day, if like you, apply and the stuff dries, then expect problems. I find it best to apply on overcast days when not warm and prefereably a damp day. If the stuff dries, it reduces its effectiveness and a sod to clean off and also, wax/polish the area afterwards. Although I'm no expert.

This is a walk down memory lane, used a fair few of these products in the past like Wonder Wheels, Back to Black, Tyre Slik, even the single bucket, sponge. Slight changes to the line up was Mer Polish followed by a coat of Simoniz Wax and cleaning the windows with Windolene and old news papers (don’t ask) Didn’t have a pressure washer back then or even a hose because of the inside taps so had to resort to the use of a watering can after nipping to the local petrol station to use their Jet Wash for the Pre Rinse. Tar and Bug Remover was extra firm, squeaky passes with the sponge until it was either removed or I gave up. As always another great video 👍🏼

Love your videos, pleased to hear you have lots more planned. I particularly enjoyed this episode demonstrating the importance of effective and useful products vs the skill of yourself knowing how to use them. My personal favourites however, are when you just set your go pro up and film a full detail on someone else's car whilst commentating over the top. I find the sounds of the pressure washer etc particularly relaxing before I go to sleep! And it does wonders for my OCD watching you leaving every machine sparkling clean. What I would really love to see in the future is an episode documenting your personal favourite products to use in each category, and perhaps a brief reason why, followed by you using it on your own car to show how good they are. It appears you are lucky enough to be gifted lots of products to "try out", often using completely different brands form video to video. So being someone who has been lucky enough to experience a much wider range of detailing products it would be great to see your opinion on the best of the bunch and your 'go to' line up. Cheers!

Great video, i remember all of those products, and as you said, back in the day thats all you had available to use. On another note, does anyone else never use wheel rim cleaners and just go over your rims every week with some normal car soap and a sponge? i dont see the need unless your the type who doesnt have time and only washes the car once a month or every 2/3 months! if you do them every week any brake dust should just wipe straight off with a soapy sponge/rinse. Thats what ive been doing for years, it literally takes me about 10minutes to go round all my alloys with a sponge/soapy water, and they look clean every day then.

Love this video!... Don't be too quick to knock the old Volvo. My dad bought one 16 years ago, which he left to me. She's 22 years old now and is still going strong after doing absolutely everything asked of her. I spent the first few years of ownership laughing at the car, but she's definitely earned my respect. I'd love to see you clean the interior of this car. Volvo have decent quality leather and the lighter colours are always satisfying to clean. Try Solution Finish to fix those door handles. It's difficult to get hold of in the UK, but well worth the effort.

Great vid, brings back some memories when I used to detail my classic mini. No time for that now though due to family life. I used to use Turtle Wax Extreme paste, it was excellent and gave a shine that lasted for weeks. I thought it was very easily applied and removed.

Meguiar's is great for the money, but I personally prefer Turtle Wax and Eagle One if you're looking for affordable products. Otherwise, go for Chemical Guys, Adam's Polishes, or if you have the money to spend.......Zymol

snowbaordguru I use the Ultimate Paste Wax, and It works amazingly, best wax iv'e used, costs around £30 but in the US it is $21. Can't really go wrong with them, nor Autoglym.

My mother had a similar container of Turtle Wax... except it was metal because it was from the 1970s and when I opened it, it had shrunk to the size of a Necco wafer from decades in the Arizona heat. BUT(!) after scraping the crusty outer shell off, the part that was still soft actually worked....

Nice looking V40. I have a V50, and am in the process of bringing it back up to a decent standard. Previous owners have neglected the paint work, so I have clay bar'd it, and wash it at IMO every week using their Pro Shield wash, which I get for half price, as I'm an AA member. It has improved the paint a fair bit, but I'm gonna properly polish it, first with a rubbing compound to gef rid of swirls and minor surface scratches, then with a good wax polish. I have restored the cream leather interior using some great products I found on ebay from "The Scratch Doctor" and the interior now looks almost new, instead of 10 years old.

Not everyone can afford £20+ for a tub of wax
@devilinthedetailers76614 жыл бұрын
If you cant afford £20 for a tub of wax then you wouldnt be able to afford the car it would be used on. Something like soft99 but may be 25-30 but one coat can last a year! And you'd get plenty of coats out of it
@TheCowboy40004 жыл бұрын
A good cheap carnuba wax that I like is meguiard gold class it's $7 for a tub much better than the hard shell. I've bought $25 sealants for my car. I have a whole cart of detailing products and supplies.

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who has to use Turtle Wax twice. Once to apply it, then again, the next day, to get rid of the white/green stuff left behind. I'm convinced that manufacturers used to add extra "chemical smell" because people assumed that it was working better.

Ahh, the "good ol days" when you only had like 10 different products to choose from and you just didn't give a s#*t as long as the car was shiny enough to trade in. Now you're confronted with having to choose from 2300 products and not enough time to properly interweb and research them all :( I don't have time to detail my car, it'll be a few more years by the time I narrow down the "best" products I want to use on my "baby". What's that you say, they'll have 4800 products to choose from by then...ahh well I'll just trade this b*t@h in and start over. I jest, detailing is a fun hobby when you restrict yourself to a few products you like and work on technique and figure out a process that works for you...and stick to it. Otherwise you're just chasing you tail. Love the content of your videos and editing...always entertaining....I especially like this episode. P.S. ALOT of products are re-branded so "don't believe the hype" or the price.

keep it simple. If in doubt grab MEguiars products, theyre a good place to 'be' with little confusion. Detailer range is even easier as the APC is used everywhere and so is the xpress wax, just check out auot fetish detailer for his tips. Keep it simple, all products are 99% the same!

That took me back to the early 2000’s.. going off to the discount auto parts shop and buying all sorts of magical “potions and lotions “ including silicone spray for tyres and dash and using whatever bucket I could find with my sponge and dried with a synthetic chamois. Great idea for a video, I think it does prove that for the non detailing inclined with a daily driver, some reasonable results can be achieved with “dodgy “ products, although the modern equivalents of those you used are substantially better.

Motorists used to be interested in how cars worked and how they could fix them ... now enthusiasts buy toiletries for cars the results of which last about as long as the first downpour.

terrortorn Very true. Detailing has become car enthusiasm for stupid people IMO.

Now they are too expensive and complicated for most motorists to learn how to fix. If i'm paying more for a car than a house I would like it to look good. Now if its a week end race car that Im not using to impress anyone then turtle wax and old rags will do.
@terrortorn7 жыл бұрын
Cars are still not beyond the wit of the average man. The experience and values of fancy car ownership touted by YT car vloggers is not the norm. Young men used to take some pride in lifting the bonnet and being able to do mechanical fundamentals at the roadside. They had to it was a necessary part of motoring and in many ways still is. Now if you have something exotic and money to burn then you are calling a taxi and going to the nearest 5* hotel while the AA cart the car off to the nearest dealership to be fixed. But for the average motorist this culture of tarting cars up rather than getting greasy is contributing to a generation of young men who can't change a wheel or have to get a "specialist" to install a battery.

I was a teen back in the late 80s and in 90 I bought a brand new Mustang GT that was black and was OCD about it. Man did this bring back memories of my labor of love on that thing! The Turtle Wax protected it well, but it was a real PITA to remove, as microfiber towels weren't so common back then and using old t-shirts (which caked up quickly) to remove the wax wasn't uncommon. By far the WORST product available and commonly used then was Armour All. Me and everyone I knew use it religiously on the interior as well as all black trim and tires. What we didn't know was that the more you used it the more dependent on it your car became as it was a water based silicone product and dried out the plastics, vinyl and rubber.

Congratis on the 50k! I'm lucky in that my cars are usually just as atrocious as the products I've used on them. Now that my car's only quite unimpressive, I hit it with some Auto Glym TFR out of the pressure washer, rinse and then swap the bottle round to some Turtle Wax wax before rinse and towling off. Quick and easy. I did clay and polish by hand when I bought the car. The paint was covered in sun cream and children's paw prints when I got it, a mix of Turtle Wax cleaner polish for the scratches and tough bits then Auto Glym resin polish for majority. Some light swirls here and there are definitely better than the sun cream eating into my clearcoat. My first car had been keyed then had the scratches aerosol painted over. T-cut did a good job of removing the paint without eating the clearcoat underneath.
