ok i think i kinda get it now. this is about how when you are so "intertwined" with someone, and the relationship eventually falls apart, everything becomes strange and different. i don't think this is about actual barbie murder. it's a representation of how loving sometimes changes you (barbie cutting her hair). the first time i heard this song i thought it was about being afraid of your problems becoming someone else's. i think that's what the video is about. they had too many problems, but they were so intertwined that when they finished their relationship, they weren't the same person as they were before. beautiful.

I love that everyone at first was saying that the music video and the song didn't match because they thought it was a cute love song and thats kinda perfect because at face value and at first impressions the song seems cute and lovely like the relationship but after you look a little harder you realise what the lyrics actually say just like you realise how toxic and broken the relationship is. To passers by it seems like a cute relationship but to those that notice its unhealthy as hell

So interesting that so many people are saying that the song doesn't fit this music video. It's a beautiful song, of course, but I've always found it a bit ?!, like the line "I've pinned every hope on you, I hope you don't bleed with me". Within the song itself there's the sense of layers - the outer layer, all idealised and pretty (aka it sounds beautiful) in contrast with the lyrics, which when you fully listen to, are quite dark (I think Dodie describes this song as how she would be clingy in love - yeah, to unhealthy level perhaps). I think this video really brings that out; maybe it's a bit extreme at times (like I wasn't too fond of the sea of blood) but then why should art always sit within what we like, in a comfortable nicety when reality (with all its horrors) is kind of interesting and beautiful in its own right. Wow that got super deep real quick.

sad. Dodie made a video explaining how she wrote it and said that it was basically about how when someone with mental health issues is in love, they might think they’re pulling the other person down with them. That’s what I got from the other vid she made, anyway.
@kileymcgroder28456 жыл бұрын
The reason I love this video so much is that it really illustrates what it feels like to have mental illness. I felt so uneasy watching this whilst listening to a beautiful song at the same time. I think those who see mental illness from an outside perspective might not truly understand how it feels, yes the song is sad, but that’s not all it is when you listen closely. From the bleeding at the ohs to the burning at the hms really shows how one might cry out for help, getting none, will calm oneself down and say everything will be fine. It’s not fine and the next day this numb feeling continues and it controls you and hurts you as you hum in pleasureful hopelessness. This music video spoke to me in a way that I would have never understood purely listening to the song as I am bad at analyzing lyrics. I could tell that the ohs were cries and I could tell the hums were numbness and I can say that this was what I needed to see to feel less alone in this horrible stage of my life. Mental illness isn’t sad, it’s sickly, and torture that no human should suffer through for so long... I don’t know what else to say, if anyone is reading this knows how I feel please I would love to talk I believe this music video is beautiful. I believe life is beautiful no matter how uneasy it may make me feel at times.
@Daffodiliousable6 жыл бұрын
Kiley McGroder i feel absolutely the same way. i feel like either you think this video is creepy and weird, or it gives you these intense feelings deep within yourself. it all depends on your mental state. i think thats the perfect example of the world, how you cant really understand mental health issues until youve been through them or are going through them yourself

Kiley McGroder I haven’t been diagnosed with a mental illness but I feel there’s something wrong with me. I constantly feel guilt and I always have the feeling of when you first find out a family member has died. I sometimes find it hard to breathe because of the pressure feeling being put on my heart and overall I constantly want to hurt myself. I think I need help I know this isn’t normal. I feel like I’m bringing my boyfriend down with me because before he was with me he made fun of like the stereotype of ‘emos’ and them being depressed but when he got with me and I opened up to him for the first time he said he feels guilty because now he knows how serious mental illness is. Whenever I talk about my problems I feel like I’m making him upset I don’t know what to do

OK, I've watched this about 10 times and here's my interpretation: it starts out in this perfect pink house, perfect man, perfect woman, perfect homemakers. All shiny happy plastic on the surface - but plastic isn't real, it's all a facade. (see: facade as a "principal front of a building" - which we see, yet also: "a deceptive outward appearance".) "Oh, i'm afraid of the things in my brain", maybe the woman realises something isn't right with the relationship, and tries to tell her partner (the open brain image), but "we can stay here, and laugh away the fear", they choose to continue to perpetuate the veneer of happiness and choose to ignore their issues. Then the house becomes shrouded in darkness, the facade (literally and figuratively) has changed - their issues couldn't be covered up any longer and have come to the surface. So the plastic perfect woman cuts off her hair so she's not so perfect anymore; her outside appearance finally starts to match her reality. I think this is symbolic of her breaking the relationship off: her hair (the relationship) is what made looked perfect and beautiful, so she cuts herself off from it, a clean break. But it's not so clean, they're so "intertwined" that it is in fact incredible messy, and both she and her partner are incredibly hurt when it all comes to a head and what's been bubbling under the surface explodes into reality (the red liquid explosion bit, very the shining!). So when she's left on her own, "intertwined... free", she's a) not the same person anymore, she's injured from the hurt of the breakup and her loss of a shot at a perfect love and b) naked, as she has been emotionally stripped bare and is naked and vulnerable on her own. "I pinned each and every hope on you" - all her hopes of a perfect relationship were shoved onto this man, symbolized with literal pins, but it eventually got too much for him, and them both, perpetuating this perfect image and idea. Hence the image of her "old self" (note the clothes) dead - i assume this is meant to look like the exit wound from a suicide, as in she killed her old self that was defined by the relationship - we look at this through a small hole, as if it's locked up in her brain somewhere. As is the memory of her lover, he's a) a skeleton now, he's no longer in her life so is also 'dead', and b) she realised he (and their relationship) was 'dead' behind all the pretense, so that's how she remembers him. Then, the final sequence: they're looking perfect again, but she burns it all down, symbolic of how she burnt down/got rid of the illusory masquerade of a perfect love/ life that she was living by ending the relationship. Conclusion: I LOVE IT. I look at the song very differently now, and I love the darker style.

I see the Barbies as a pretty great representation of how people with a mental illness can seem like from an outside perspective, most people might not think there's anything wrong at all. They can also represent the standard to which a person with mental illness could set for themselves (literally impossible and unattainable).
@matthewchinmingwei67217 жыл бұрын
I feel that too often people don't take someone saying that they have a mental illness or mental condition too seriously, especially if it's not obvious. True, it is sometimes easy for someone who isn't actually ill to fake it or think they are actually a sufferer, but that's why I like this video. It breaks away from the norm and shows the side of things that people usually don't want to or like seeing and hearing. That things aren't OKAY, that it's not just IN MY HEAD, that it's GOING TO PASS with time or ITS JUST A PHASE. The dollhouse represents the persona's life as well as her mind, specifically the world to her mind. She's scared because she doesn't trust her mind. She has someone close by her side, and she is hoping that they can be the ones to ease her world and shoulder all the fears she has. All the scenes are things the persona imagines, scenes and things her head throws out at her that feel real and scary to her even though they may not actually be real. She lashes out, or thinks she does. The persona's biggest fear is that she one day will not be able to take it any more or that she one day will not be able to tell the difference and her mental illness will overwhelm her sense of reality and logic. The house burning at the end represents to her the feeling of her world crumbling around her, or burning in this case (burning hurts more and it sure feels painful). And even till the end the person is by her side, not fully knowing what is going on in her head, how can he? And all she can do as she is suffering in her mind is cling on to him and his image. That's what this video is about. Her fear of what's going on in her head, how much the person means to her because she is scared what will happen if he isn't there, and how it feels to suffer a mental condition and have the world look on you the way they do.

Ming Wei The fire scene to me was more of her feeling guilty about the idea she might be setting her relationship on fire with her mental issues. The guilt of dragging someone through that war with you and having to experience you at your worst which after time can eventually wear the other person down. or at least this is a fear or mine/something i can relate to.
@matthewchinmingwei67217 жыл бұрын
NAOMIKVED that actually is a very good way to look at it, I certainly don't disagree with it. There have been very few music videos that have made me see the song from a different perspective, and this is one of them! I love the contrast in this video. It begins with a perfect Barbie and Ken (that being the relationship) and then slowly but surely, the lyrics get darker and the scenes get darker as if to show the unearthly pain that can be felt in those relations...

maybe its just me projecting onto the music, but this is my interpretation: theyre in a relationship, and a comfortable one at that. but she starts getting an off feeling (mental illness, problems in relationship, up to interpretation) but she pushes past it, because they love each other and they can work past this, right? they'll laugh away the fear. but things start getting worse. and its to a point where they cant ignore their problems anymore. its killing them both. but they love each other, they're intertwined. they can make it through this, they have to. but in the end, they cant. theres too much damage done. too much blood spilled. they have to end their relationship, and its the most painful thing. the fire, destroying them, destroying what they built, what they had. the fire is the end, and they cant rebuild from it. but thats just what i thought.

I have to be honest, before knowing the context, I thought that this song was perfect for me and my boyfriend. As time went on, I realized our dependency for each other, and it ended in him dumping me for his ex, where they were both even more dependent on each other. This song makes me cry, because I associated it with how I thought things were fine, but as time progressed, it became more painful. the line "I pinned each and every hope on you, I hope you dont bleed with me." is so relevant, because I pinned all my happiness on a guy who threw away my love for a girl that never appreciated him, and he pinned his happiness on his ex, who promised him happiness if he came back.

I love this because it's like a lil hidden message behind the song. It's about love, but there are negatives to love. And this kinda shows that there is a lot of chaos in what seems to be a calm, put-together, and happy relationship. It's not all feet touching feet and intertwining bodies. There are pieces of it that you just can't shake.

Antonia Hendriks Maybe 20. Maybe more, if you consider the fact that some dolls had to be redone to meet requirements. And this video took a lot of scenes depicting each doll, and there was a lot of detail going into it. :P

Does anyone else absolutely love this? I don't see where all the hate is coming from I think it's a work of art and considering how long it must have taken to put together and perfect I think some people are being a little quick to judge and should perhaps keep the negativity to themselves. We should be congratulating dodie and everyone else on their hard work not dismissing it just because it's slightly different. A bit of madness is key

my theory is that both the barbies live in a picture perfect home, they are both gorgeous individuals and seem to be perfect from just looking in. But when barbie opens up her demons to ken (when she shows her brain) things start to take a gory turn and they try to hide up her mental issues with sex. Ken is trying to ignore barbies issuesand it slowly drives her to insanity, i think that the 'blood' that is poured on them thoughout the video is also like there minds and how they feel inside and thought the toxic relationship they have both changed for the worst because they were hiding how they really thought on the inside, refusing to try to help eachother and hiding it with sex. idk just my thoughts

I love that song and art mean different things to different people and to me that shows how unique each person is and how their mid works. I love it. Also this song is amazing and the soft music compared to the violent images as well as the contrast in lyrics makes a big impact. For me it's not about a toxic relationship. It's about feeling toxic yourself, like your sickness will spread to the one you love most. You've pinned you're hopes on them, because you're lost and afraid, drowning even. Terrified you'll end up pulling them under with you. Made ever more awful by seeing the cracks. Everything has to be fine, you have to go numb to even manage, otherwise lose yourself to despair.

After watching this and listening to the song a few more times I think this depicts that sometimes relationships can be destructive. One person can corrupt the other when they are together like this. Although sometimes it's out of someone's control. Knowing Dodie and that she has depersonalization it could just be that she wouldn't want to bring down someone else because of her suffering. The line "I hope you don't bleed with me" at the end really got to me. This was just my interpretation of it. Thank you Sammy for such a beautiful, thought provoking video! x

Those of you saying "this isnt lile Dodie at all" must not watch any of Dodie's videos.. this is Dodie. Its artsy and creative. The idea behind it is beautiful and I really do wish more artists branched out like this. Sammy obviously worked very hard on this and Dodie as well. Dodie isn't just cute and adorable. This is a representation of the art and beauty she is capable of. The message is powerful. Its not about the fake gore. Its about a couple who hid from their own fear then burned out. I love it and Im extremely proud. If you really loved Dodie, maybe instead of shitting all over it because its "not like her at all" you should be supporting her and praising her art, because really? It's genius.

wow, this video completely represents how i actually felt listening to this song. i very freshly got out of a dangerously codependent relationship, and our illnesses were so intertwined that we ended up crashing and burning together, eventually becoming abusive. this song and video is everything i went through in that relationship, and honestly, seeing it like this really helped solidify how badly i felt then, and how I shouldn't feel guilty that I'm out of it now. though the world will try. thank you dodie for summing this all up so beautifully and helping me figure out where I stand in one little way :)

I absolutely loved this video. I’ve seen some comments asking for the meaning behind it, so this is my personal take: Disclaimer: Dodie if you read this and anything I’ve written offends you or you feel I have misrepresented any message you’re trying to convey - I apologise and it was not my intention at all. I think Dodie is a natural at conveying the strongest messages in the most simplistic way. I only discovered her a few months ago but her image resonated with me. The happy, bubbly girl on the outside blankets the anxiety, depression and depersonalisation within - but that does not mean that both aren’t genuine. Rather both are valid aspects of being. I feel like this song is perhaps the most accurately beautiful representation of everything that makes Dodie who she is and what she goes through. Mental health issues are not fun nor are they something people should be celebrating or glorifying. Mental health is dark and malicious and the video captures this idea. The dollhouse symbolising the idea of perfection - sweet and beautiful - is juxtaposed by initially subtle yet gruesome imagery of the exposed brain. The video continues to explore this imagery, concluding with a full blown house fire that destroys everything, notwithstanding the warm baritone ukulele and Dodie's soft vocals playing throughout. The video tells the story of how what is seen on the outside, no matter how perfect, can never conceal, nor is invulnerable to, the pain within. The false hope in the line “but we can stay here and laugh away the fear” ties in with the conclusion of the video, the destructive nature of a co-dependent relationship.
